Why HICSS
• One of the longest-standing continuously running scientific conferences http://www.hicss.org/
• It brings together about1000 researchers from over 40 countries
• Approximately 50% participants are non-US.
• Papers published in the Proceedings by the IEEE Computer Society Press and carried in the
IEEE digital library Xplore (with open access)
• Access to HICSS papers is in the top 2% of IEEE Conferences.
• HICSS is the #1 IS conference in terms of citations as recorded by Google Scholar.
• Recent research that shows HICSS ranked 2nd in citation ranking among 18 Information
Systems (IS) conferences, ranked 3rd in value to the MIS field among 13 Management
Information Systems (MIS) conferences, and ranked 2nd in conference rating among 11 IS
conferences
• The Australian Government's Excellence in Research project has given HICSS an "A" rating,
one of 32 Information Systems conferences so honored out of 241.
• HICSS is a “working” conference where people prefer discussing ideas rather than informing
colleagues about final results
• Emerging topics - rich agenda with multiple tracks, minitracks, workshops, tutorials, keynotes

A tutorial on Cognitive Computing and Cognitive
Assistants for Research and Teaching
Cognitive Assistants have become essential. No human can absorb the amount
of data available for their profession nor can they enhance outcomes without
leveraging latest information. With assistance from cognitive systems, humans
can make better, faster and more accurate decisions. This tutorial will explore
how cognitive assistants are improving the outcomes of doctors, lawyers,
teachers and other professionals. Cognitive assistants for every profession will
enhance human productivity, accuracy, and confidence and will allow humans to
greatly expand their expertise.

A minitrack on Smart Service Systems: Analytic,
Cognition and Innovation
Smart service systems can be characterized by: the types of offerings to their
customers and/or citizens, the types of jobs or roles for people within them, and the
types of returns they offer investors interested in growth and development. An
important trend in smart service systems is the increasing availability of cognitive
assistants (e.g., Siri, Watson, Jibo, Echo, Cortana) to boost productivity and creativity.
There is a need to apply robust research findings in the appropriate management and
organizational contexts related to innovation of smart service systems, quality,
architecture, design and delivery, and the resulting customer satisfaction and business
value. The goal of this track is to explore the challenges, issues and opportunities
related to innovation of smart service systems that enable value co-creation with
analytics, cognitive and human systems. We are interested in novel theories,
approaches and applications for innovation of smart service systems.

A minitrack Business Intelligence, Analytics and Cognitive:
Case Studies and Applications (COGS)
The purpose of this minitrack is to invite case studies of both successful and
unsuccessful, but informative, applications of business intelligence, data analytics,
cognitive systems, & data, analytics & cognitive-enabled smart services across
industries and societies. Business intelligence and data analytics have continued to
make substantial inroads in the operational, managerial and strategic corporate
decision-making processes. Recently, the emergence of cognitive computing systems
that augment the creativity and productivity of people, and which are trained using
artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to predict, infer and, up to some
extent augment cognitive capabilities, has also extended the range of business
intelligence and data analytics solutions on the market.
We are looking for reports that improve our understanding of how BI, Analytics,
Cognitive technologies and Smart Services are currently used across industries and
societies.
