From the portfolio of Green Earth Theater, Diane Cameron writes the story of two best friends who live in the zoo. Fred a very very tall giraffe and his best friend felix a hummingbird who is lazy and does not like to fly. They live in a perfect existence at the zoo, a zoo without wall where they can come and go as they please. Until one day, when a new zookeeper takes control and decided to erect a 10 foot fence around the entire zoo. Delightful for young readers, but a message for all.

All the animals of Loopyville CityTown Zoo rose at daybreak. Yellow rays of
the sun announced a new day, warm breezes from the ocean air
brushed their faces and the scent of newly mown grass perfumed their
nostrils as work crews scurried back and forth over the sprawling zoo
landscaping.
Fred and Felix lived at CityTown. Fred and Felix were best friends. Fred was
a giraffe who was very very shy. Felix was a hummingbird who was very very
bold. Best friends they were indeed. Felix would ride inside of Fred's ear all
over CityTown for he was too lazy to fly. Fred would keep the flap of his ear
down to keep the wind from chilling Felix as they traveled. Yes sir! They
were the best of friends and they were very very happy.
They were happy for many many reasons. You see, CityTown was unlike any
other Zoo. There were no walls, gates, or fences; as a matter of fact there

2. was a long waiting list of names of animals that wanted to move to CityTown.
It was the most famous and prestigious zoo in the whole wide world and a
status symbol to have as an address. Fred and Felix had a daily menu request
sheet to choose their favorite meals, a personal interior decorator to
oversee and update their living quarters and a credit card to use down at the
Sunshine Commons Store to buy any item they chose. Felix loved peppermint;
in fact he loved peppermint so much that his living quarters were decorated
in red and white stripes. Fred always bought big juicy green apples.
Mr. Simon, a short, portly gray haired gentleman with huge black glasses and
a thick accent was the Zoo Keeper. A hefty donation from his grandfather’s
estate founded and maintained all of CityTown Zoo’s expenses. The
Loopyville Chamber of Commerce was so grateful; they erected a huge stone
statue at the entrance of the town. It read quot;In Appreciation of Augustus
Herman Simon - The Father of CityTownquot;
Acres after acres of this lush, green and tropical paradise were home to the
select and privileged, and they lived together as one big happy happy family.
“Good Morning Fred” quot;Good Morning Felixquot; greeted Mr. Simon as he passed
Suite G; he called out to Fred without even looking up. Mr. Simon knew these
grounds like the back of his hand. He remembers when the Founding
Fathers of Loopyville voted to build a zoo. His grandfather Augustus Herman
Simon announced at the Town Hall Meeting his plans to build CityTown as a
gift to the town. He told them he wanted to build a zoo with a completely
different concept. Animals would populate this zoo by their own choosing.
Mr. Simon was a big nature lover. He remembers his grandfather would
always bring home every lost and stray animal he could find. As a boy during
the summers spent at his grandfather’s ranch, he witnessed the grounds
becoming a virtual animal haven. He knew his grandfather’s vision was to have
a sanctuary where all animals could come if they so desired, and be treated
with absolute royalty. Looking around Mr. Simon smiled, Ah…. This is just
how he would want it, no walls, fences or gates.
Felix looked up from his breakfast of candy canes in time to watch Mr.
Simon hustle by. He always seemed so happy, always smiling. It occurred to
Felix that he addressed each of them by name. Imagine that, Felix thought,
1500 residents and still he knew them all by name. Felix waited for Fred to
come to pick him up for their morning walk. Actually, the only one walking

3. was Fred. Felix would simply fly up to Fred’s head and perch
comfortably inside of his ear. Together they would tour the grounds, say
hello to their other pals and discuss the business of the day.
Felix was very excited about today. He had big important plans. Today was
a good day. It was the day for the spectacular perfect pet contest. Felix
read an ad in the classifieds of the local news. There was a perfect pet
contest today at 3:00 p.m., and Felix was determined to make sure Fred
entered the competition. The prize was a two-hour ride for the winner and a
guest in a Hot Air Balloon over the city. Felix always wanted to know how it
felt to soar high in the air. He was just too lazy to attempt it on his own. He
pondered mischievously about how he would convince Fred to enter.... and of
course if Fred were to win; Felix would certainly agree to be his guest.
There was just one problem. The contest rules required a quot;personquot; had to
fill out the entry form. Felix didn't know how he was going to get around this
requirement; he did know he wasn't going to give up... So the plot to find
someone willing to be Fred’s owner for a day became his number one priority.
After a couple of weeks, Fred noticed he hadn’t seen Mr. Simon. He sent
Felix out to spy and bring back information. While he waited on the news, he
noticed a constant hammering and banging. As a matter of fact it was
getting louder each day. Fred wondered what was going on. He soon spotted
Felix returning to the quarters with an extremely worried look on his face.
All 12 feet of Fred began shaking when Felix spoke. “Mr. Simon is gone Fred,
the zoo has been sold…..he stuttered, and…..the new owner is building a 10
foot wall around the zoo. At hearing this, Fred began to cry and cry and cry,

their classmates who are from another race, country, religion, etc. It also teaches
how we thrive when we are connected to others through friendship. The greatest

nature because of man made interferences in the earth’s natural landscaping.
