1. UNITED STATES OF COLOMBIA
1863 - 1886

2. After several wars between
the states of the Granada
Confederation (1858-1863),
the leaders of 9 states meet in
Rionegro (Antioquia) with the
objective of creating a new
federal constitution and a
new country called the United
States of Colombia. The
names of the states were:
1. Antioquia
2. Bolivar
3. Boyacá
4. Cauca
5. Cundinamarca
6. Magdalena
7. Panama
8. Santander
9. Tolima

3. The country radically
changed several laws in
the country that had a
liberal inclination:
- Power was taken from
the churches
- Free bearing of arms
- Primary education for
free
19th century church

4. In the United States of
Colombia there were leaders
who made important changes
for the country:
- Creation of the National
University, with law and
medicine, the first faculties
- Freedom of worship
- Creation of many
newspapers
National University

5. - Creation of the Agustín
Codazzi Institute
- Order of the National
Bank, an official currency

was established
- Introduction of the
telegraph
- Establishment of civil
marriage

6. This period of history demonstrated that Colombia was not prepared to be a federalist
territory. The United States of Colombia ended under the period recognized as the
Regeneration with President Rafael Núñez, founding a conservative and centralist
Republic, this with the help of the new constitution of 1886.
