2. What is the Independence of Colombia?
Despite the fact that July 20th is our defining date, the
independence of Colombia is preceded by various rebellions in
which Cartagena, Cali, Mompox, Bogotá, and all regions were
fundamental, also the fight in North America against Great Britain,
the French Revolution and the Revolution in Haiti.
All these events united one in particular that marked universal
history: the fracture of Spain, and with this the loss of prestige of the
crown.

4. Zambos, mulattos, mestizos, Indians, blacks, indigenous
people, were violently exterminated by the Spanish during the first
100 years of conquest. Subjected to mining, cultivation and abusive
work. Without forgetting the looting that financed the expeditions that
the Spanish crown did not assume.
Since 1555 there have been riots of resistance towards colonization
by the Tayrona and Quimbaya. A fight against the loss of freedom
and territories. The resistance was such that until the middle of the
16th century, New Granada was considered colonized.
5. The so-called Rebellion of the commoners, in addition to the
opposition of the black slaves in 1781, were the bases of the
independence of Colombia.
Between 1810 and 1816 it is known as the period of the first stage of
war, since in all Colombian regions the people fought for their
independence. Mompox was the first to declare himself free;
However, this period is also known as the Patria Boba, as it was
fought, but the king was still the leader.

7. What was supposed to be an act of freedom ended up being
a cry of anarchy that forgot about the new Spanish threat
and that resulted in the fall of Cartagena. It was not until
1819 with the Battle of Boyacá that the independence and
birth of the Republic of Colombia was proclaimed.
Antonio Nariño with the publication of the Declaration of
the Rights of Man, José Celestino Mutis with the
botanical expedition, Sabio Caldas and his great
contributions, Policarpa Salavarrieta and his memorable
courage, are considered as the heroes of independence.
8. On July 20th, 1810, Colombia was declared independent for a
symbolic reason, in which a vase was the trigger for the patriots who
met in the Plaza Mayor of Santa Fe to start fighting against the
Spanish.
After the collapse of Napoleon's empire, the second attempt to
recover the colonies took place in 1816, which is known as the
Reconquest, which was led by Pablo Morrillo. The reason? The
lack of organization and the division between centralists and
federalists.
