Dance is a powerful impulse but the art of dance is that impulse channeled by skillful performers into something that becomes intensely expressive and that may delight spectators who feel no wish to dance themselves.

Human beings probably danced even before there was a word for it. People dance for all kinds of reasons - to mourn, to celebrate, to heal, to give thanks, to preserve cultural heritage and treasured legends, to demonstrate physical prowess, to assert individuality, to provoke and to entertain.
Music – Dance and music compliments each other and so for an effective dance performance there ought a good music
Movement- It refers to action of dances with the use of their bodies to create organized patterns.
Theme - It actually conveys the message of the dance.
Techniques - As a dancer, one needs to have a complete control over the muscles of his body for him to be said technically proficient.
Design - It refers to the arrangement of movements according to pattern in time and space

These are popular type of dancing for pleasure as generally performed by pairs or group of people following a definite step or pattern.
There re two types of it
Ballroom : It actually originated as square dance
Folk: It usually derived from ethnic dances. People all over the world have their own folk dances as distinct to their specific culture.
These are dances which are intended for viewing audience. Usually, these are performed for the entertainment of spectators.This also have two types
Ballet - It’s the ultimate expression of art in dance which originated in the royal courts during the middle ages. The movement of the dance is subject to definite discipline of the body, hands, legs and others.
Modern Dance: It is often characterized as something natural and free. It is also been called as expressional dance.
Dancer: Professional dancers are usually employed on contract or for particular performances or productions.
Dance teacher: Dance teachers typically focus on teaching dance performance, or coaching competitive dancers, or both.
Choreographer: Choreographers are often university trained and are typically employed for particular projects or, more rarely may work on contract as the resident choreographer for a specific dance company.
