3. ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS
Andaman & Nicobar is a cluster
of 572 small and large islands,
islets and rocks lying in the
South Eastern Part of the Bay of
Bengal.
The coastline of the islands
stretches for about 100 km and
dense forest stretch all across.
Islands occupy about 8,293
square kilometers. The capital
city is Port Blair.
This place is famous as a tourist
place due to its white sand

5. GETTING IN AND OUT1) By Air : The island has its domestic airport at Port Blair, which
has regular flight operations from Kolkata and Chennai.
2) By Sea : Cruising through the Bay of Bengal is a delightful
experience to reach Andaman. Regular passenger ship service
operate to Port Blair from Chennai(60 hours), Kolkata(66
hours) and Vishakhapatnam(56 hours).

7. 1) CELLULAR JAIL
Situated in Port Blair it goes down in the
pages of history as a jail that witnessed
the torturous killings of the freedom
fighters. The Jails gets its name owing to
its cellular design- 693 cells.
It has a Light and Sound show which is a
tribute to the martyrs of the heroic
freedom struggle. Some more sight seeing
attractions at the jail is an Art gallery and a
Photo gallery.
8. 2) ANDAMAN WATER SPORTS COMPLEX
It is situated in the northwestern part of the Port Blair near the
Cellular Jail and is first of its kind in India. It has all possible aqua
sports facilities including safe water sports like paddle boats, row
boats and water cycle, and adventure water sports like wind surfing,
wind skiing, water scooter.
There is an artificial waterfall as well, which is a great attraction
among the visitors. A children park nearby is a place for children to
enjoy the serene environment.
9. 3) HAVELOCK ISLAND
The island is 54 km (34 miles) northeast of Port
Blair, and it is the most popular among visitors
as it is well equipped, with government and
private guest houses, and also has a well
stocked main bazaar.
Radhanagar Beach is at the western tip of the
island, where dolphins and turtles can be
spotted from the long stretches of white sand.
Another beach here is Vijaynagar beach.
10. 4) JOLLY BUOY
An island in Mahatma Gandhi Marine
National Park, is an ideal place for
snorkeling, sea bathing and basking on
the sun kissed beach. It offers a breath
taking underwater view of coral and
marine life.
11. 5) ROSS ISLAND
The island presently has the ruins of old buildings like Ballroom, Chief
Commissioner's House, Govt. House, Church, Hospital, Bakery, Press,
Swimming Pool and Troop Barracks, reminiscent of the old British
regime. Navy has established a museum on the Island known as
Smritika depicting the history of the Island.
12. 6) VIPER ISLAND
The tiny, serene, beautiful island of
Viper is another place that has
been witness to the sufferings of
the freedom fighters. It is located
at the mouth of Port Blair.
13. 7) CORBYN’S COVE TOURISM COMPLEX
One of the most picturesque sea-
beaches, it is ideal for sea bathing and
sun-basking.
It is approximately 7 km away from Port
Blair.
8) CHIDIYA TAPU
It is the southern most tip of South
Andaman.
The lush green mangroves, forest cover
with numerous chirping birds and the
Sylvan
Sands and Munda pahar beaches make
it an ideal picnic site.
14. 9) MOUNT HARRIET
The summer headquarters of the Chief
Commissioner during British Raj, this
place is an ideal for a nice and fascinating
over view of the outer islands and the
sea.
It is the highest peak in the South
Andamans (365 m high). One can trek
upto Madhuban through a nature trail
and can find rare endemic birds, animals
and butterflies.

15. 10) CINQUE ISLAND
The lure of underwater
coral gardens and unspoiled
beaches specially a sand bar
joining two islands are
irresistible. Super place for
SCUBA diving, swimming,
fishing and Camping.
11) NORTH BAY ISLAND
It is a small island inhabited
by a few people. Ferries
operate from the Port Blair
Harbor to reach there. Here
also water sports facilities
like jetsky, snorkeling, under
water diving are available.

16. NICOBAR ISLANDS
The Nicobar Islands are part of a
great island arc created by the collision of
the Indo-Australian Plate with Eurasia.
The vegetation of the Nicobars is typically
divided into the coastal mangrove forests
and the interior evergreen and
deciduous Tropical and subtropical moist
broadleaf forests.
They are recognized as a distinct terrestrial
ecoregion, the Nicobar Islands rain forests
with many endemic species.

ISLANDS1) CAR NICOBAR
It is 16 hours journey by sea from
Port Blair. Car Nicobar,
headquarters of Nicobar District is
a flat fertile island covered with
coconut palms and captivating sea
shores. The Nicobari huts are
unique to this island.
2) KATCHAL (425 kms by sea)
It is a tiny island in the Nicobar
group. This island has beautiful
beaches at East bay, Jhula and
West bay.
18. 3) NANCOWRY
It refers both to a single island and to the
group of adjoining islands that make up
the central part of the Nicobar
Islands chain, located in the
northeast Indian Ocean between the Bay
of Bengal and the Andaman Sea.
The Nancowry group of islands were
among the worst-hit islands in the chain,
with thousands missing and presumed
dead.
4) INDIRA POINT
It is the southernmost point of Republic
of India. It is situated on Great
Nicobar Island in the Nicobar Islands. It
has been destroyed in Tsunami but the
light house is visible.
19. 5) CHAURA ISLANDS OR CHOWRA
Located in the Nicobars they have turquoise blue waters and
are famous for serene and beautiful site. Suitable for fishing.
20. FAIRS AND FESTIVALS
1) ISLAND TOURISM FESTIVAL
The festival is organized mainly during
December and January by Andaman and
Nicobar administration every year. This is
a 10-day festival packed with colorful
events ranging from dance to drama.
2) SUBHASH MELA
It is organized at Havelock every year in
January to commemorate the birth
anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra
Bose.

It is organized in the month of
January at Neil Island to
celebrate the birth anniversary
of Swami Vivekanada.
4) BLOCK MELA
Held at Diglipur, this highlights
the developments that have
taken place in the rural areas
and displays the typical rural
life of these islands.
