Introduction
A combination of confusion and fascination over strange social behaviors is the
reason that draws students and researchers to the field of social psychology. It is a study
of how other people influence an individual’s thoughts, feelings and social behaviors.
Social psychologists always emphasize the external environment. They work to
understand how groups, attitudes, social roles and norms encourage us to behave cruelly
or aggressively, as well as lovingly and altruistically.
In this social psychology final project , we are required to form a group with five
members and the project must be consisted of 2 components which include making up a
video clip by incorporating the concepts learned in class. The purpose of this assignment
is to allow student to recognize and identify the relation among concepts and perspectives
within psychology and other disciplines. Besides, student will learn how to apply all
those concepts taught in real life. This would help the students to have a better
understanding of the concept hence strengthen their knowledge of social psychology.
This would come handy to everyone’s life especially to understand other based on their
circumstance and avoid misunderstanding.
The concepts that we used for this assignment are social facilitation, BIRGing,
observational learning, illusion of control and selffulfilling prophecy. This report record
our understanding about the chosen concepts and on how we incorporate these concept in
our video.

3.0 Discussion
3.1 Applied Theories
In our social psychology video clip, it had incorporated the five concepts that we learned
in the class. The main concepts that involved in our video are social facilitation,
selffulfilling prophecy, observational learning, illusion of control and BIRGing.
First Concept
Theory: Social Facilitation (Chapter 1 )
Definition:Social facilitation is the tendency for people to do better on simple tasks when
in the presence of other people. This implies that, whenever people are being watched by
others, they will do well on things that they are already good at doing.
Explanation: In the first scene, we introduced Satesh as an athletic who always won in
every competitions that he joined in. He was Taylor’s University’s representative in 200
meter running competition. Satesh was really committed with his career as an athletic.
During his training session, he tried to break his last record but he failed. He did push up,
sit up and other exercise to strengthen his muscle. During the competition, he get first
place and manage to break his record. With the presence of others who doing the same
task as Satesh, have trigger him to do better compare when he did it alone.

Second Concept
Theory : Illusion of control (Chapter 3 )
Definition : According to Ellen Langer, illusion of control is the tendency for people to
overestimate their ability to control events. For example, it occurs when someone feels a
sense of control over outcomes that they demonstrably do not influence.
Explanation : In our third scene, Satesh shared his secret with Jia Haur on how he got
flying colours in his exam. He told Jia Haur that it is all because of his lucky pen.
Everytime he used that lucky pen to sit for the exam, he always get great result. Illusion
of control can lead to self serving bias as it occur due to a need to protect selfesteem
from negative consequences of the loss of control. It is a defense mechanism that make
the person full of control and maintain his or her selfesteem when the person face events
that he or she cannot control. So, when Satesh got D in his mid year exam he blame his
lost lucky pen.

Third Concept
Theory : BIRGing ( Chapter 2 )
Definition : BIRGing is an acronym which stands for Basking in Reflected Glory. It
means we are feeling good by identifying with others who are successful.
Explanation : In second scene, even though Iman and Jordon were not personally
involved with Satesh’s success but they felt very proud to have Satesh as their friend.
BIRGing can enhance our selfesteem and selfevaluation as it has connection with
identity theory. In this case, Iman and Jordon used Satesh’s achievement to maintain and
support their personal and collective identities. So, they can be perceived as successful by
be friend with him. It also will be more pleasure to be with successful person than be with
someone who failed.

Fourth Concept
Theory :Observational Learning ( Chapter 5 )
Definition :Replicating, retaining and watching others engage in behaviors and repeat
those action from a model.
Explanation : Jia Haur noticed that Satesh always got good grade in all his exam and he
usually used the same pen everytime he taking his exam. So, Jia Haur was really curious
to know about Satesh’s secret. In our third scene, it shows that Satesh was telling his
secret to Jia Haur. From that moment, Jia Haur learnt how Satesh achieved good grades
in exam. He tried to borrow the pen from Satesh but Satesh did not allowed him to touch
his precious pen. Usually, the only things that can be limit to observational learning are
their level of ability to copy the person well that the learner possesses and the intelligence
level. The behavior may not happen in a short time as Jia Haur has the choice to continue
exhibiting the behavior depend on the outcome.

Fifth Concept
Theory :Selffulfilling prophecy (Chapter 7 )
Definition :Self Fulfilling Prophecy is a prediction that causes itself to come true due to
the simple fact that the prediction was made. This happens because our beliefs influence
our actions. It also can lead to the positive and negative behaviors.
Explanation: When people who hold on tightly to a need on control, things need to be
just so. They get panic when the circumstance change. In this case, when Satesh lost his
lucky pen, he started to think that this incident can affect his exam result, he then acted in
a way that will directly or indirectly cause his belief to come true. He try to look for his
lucky pen everywhere but still could not find it. He was really worried because he had
exam that day. He met his counselor to ask for help but the teacher did not understand his
problem. He felt very helpless. Then, he walked dejectedly to his exam class. During the
exam, he could not concentrate of his paper, his mind kept wandering around. When the
result came out, as Satesh expected he got D for his mid year exam.

Conclusion
Through this project, all of us have a better understanding of the social psychology
concept and we knew how to incorporate it into real life situation. We managed to
recognize and identify the relation among concepts and perspectives within psychology
and other disciplines.
Besides, we learnt how to present our video in a creative manner. We had learnt
shooting and acting skills through this final assignment. Even though it felt very awkward
at first as most of us are not good enough to act ourselves in front of the camera, we try
our best to overcome the problem and we managed to finish our video.
Lastly, this is a great experience for us as this assignment is a bit different from
other assignment. Besides gaining more knowledge about social psychology, we really
enjoying ourselves while doing the video shooting.
