1. Global Hand washing Day, celebrated on October 15,
aims to increase awareness and understanding of the
benefits of hand washing with soap
2. This 2018 theme for the GHD is
“Clean hands: A recipe for health.”
3. Encourage people to wash their hands with soap and clean water
at critical times, such as after using the bathroom, before, during
and after preparing food, etc.
4. Proper hand washing is simple, inexpensive
and can help prevent germs that can make
people sick.
5. Hand washing reduces your risk of various
diseases, including diarrhoea and pneumonia.
According to UNICEF, research suggests that
children who wash their hands with soap after
using the toilet and before eating can reduce
the risk of getting diarrhoea by over 40 per
cent.
6. Germs, such as bacteria and viruses, are
microscopic and can't be seen by naked eyes.
They can be found everywhere, including
objects like cell phones and your toothbrush,
and can be transferred to your hands when
you touch them. However, hand washing will
help you avoid getting sick as well as
spreading of germs to others.
7. Hand washing is also the best way to prevent
the spread of skin infections, including
measles, chicken pox, rashes, eczema, etc.
Make sure that you wash your hands with
clean water using a soap before eating or after
touching any object.
8. Good hand washing practices can help you
prevent catching or spreading viruses,
including the one that causes hepatitis A – a
highly contagious liver infection caused by the
hepatitis A virus. Hepatitis A spreads from
contaminated food or water or contact with
someone who is infected.
9. Hand washing is one of the best precautions
you can take to help prevent the spread of
many types of infection and illness, mainly
resulting from consumption of contaminated
food or water. This Global Hand washing Day,
try to make a difference by encouraging and
promoting effective hand washing in your
community.

17. 1. Wet your hands with clean, running water
(warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply
soap.
Why? Because hands could become re-
contaminated if placed in a basin of standing
water that has been contaminated through
previous use, clean running water should be
used. However, washing with non-potable
water when necessary may still improve
health.
18. Using soap to wash hands is more effective
than using water alone because the
surfactants in soap lift soil and microbes from
skin, and people tend to scrub hands more
thoroughly when using soap, which further
removes germs.
19. 2. Lather your hands by rubbing them
together with the soap. Be sure to lather the
backs of your hands, between your fingers,
and under your nails.
Why? Lathering and scrubbing hands creates
friction, which helps lift dirt, grease, and
microbes from skin. Microbes are present on
all surfaces of the hand, often in particularly
high concentration under the nails, so the
entire hand should be scrubbed.
20. 3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds.
Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song
from beginning to end twice.
Why? Nonetheless, evidence suggests that
washing hands for about 15-30 seconds
removes more germs from hands than
washing for shorter periods.
21. 4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running
water.
Why? Soap and friction help lift dirt, grease,
and microbes — including disease-causing
germs — from skin so they can then be rinsed
off of hands. Rinsing the soap away also
minimizes skin irritation.
.
22. 5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air
dry them.
Why? Germs can be transferred more easily to
and from wet hands; therefore, hands should
be dried after washing.
Nonetheless, studies suggest that using a
clean towel or air drying hands are best.
