It does not take much for an individual to start helping the environment. One of
the easiest and cheapest changes that can be made is for one to turn off lights when not in
use. Turning the heat down a few degrees and the air conditioning up a few degrees
saves money and energy. Unplugging appliances – computers, phone chargers, coffee
makers, and clocks – can help reduce harmful CO² emissions. Carpooling is a great
alternative for getting somewhere when more than one person is going to the same place
and lives close by or on the way.
Participation in a local recycling center is a great way to help reduce landfill
garbage and reduce the cost of garbage disposal. In addition, if one reduces and reuses
items, they can save a lot of money while helping the environment. For example, instead
of buying sandwich bags, buy a sandwich container to reuse instead. The cost will
eventually be recaptured after a short period. The same goes with individual juice
containers and individually wrapped cheese. Instead of just throwing food away,
composting leftovers and unbleached coffee filters, for instance, can offer free “fertilizer”
for gardens and flowers.
For those who are willing to spend a little extra money to help the environment,
they can choose to buy energy efficient light bulbs or by blocks of “green energy” from
their energy suppliers, if available in their area. Solar panels and wind turbines, though
expensive, offer sustainable energy and over time, should pay for themselves. Extra
insulation in an attic will help keep heat from escaping, thus saving money and energy.
Finally, electric and hybrid vehicles are available for purchase, at a price. All of these
tips performed even by a few individuals can help make a difference in the environment.
