Floods are a major problem in Jakarta, Indonesia due to several factors. Over 40% of Jakarta is below sea level, exacerbating flooding from heavy rains and poor drainage systems. Climate change has increased flooding in recent decades. The 2014 floods caused over $1 billion in damages. Solutions require cooperation across government, businesses, and communities to improve flood prevention infrastructure, regulate environmental pollution, and increase public awareness.

Jakarta is located on the northwest coast
of Java
The average elevation of Jakarta is 8
metres (26 ft) above sea level
40% of the areas are below sea level

4. Jakarta and Flood
Flood is one of the main problem in Jakarta
It happens almost every year
In the last 20 years, it happens in 1994,
1996, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2007, 2008, 2013,
and 2014.
According to Indonesia’s Agency for the
Assessment and Application of Technology,
the material loss from the 2014’s flood was
around 12 trillion rupiah or around 1 billion
USD

knowledge about flood, the cause, and how to prevent it

◦ Government and the citizen should help protecting the
neighborhood by not doing things that cause the flood,
and do the things that help prevent the flood

help them cope incase the flood happens
