Social Justice Action Project Proposal Purpose: This assignment requires you to propose an activism project (a) designed to address a social justice issue and (b) that relates to a significant issue or topic addressed during the semester. You will select a social justice issue and develop a proposal that addresses your goals for social transformation related to the specific issue you’ve selected. Unless your instructor indicates otherwise, you have two options: (1) you may propose a personal act of activism involving only yourself; (2) or you may propose a collective act that involves more people than just yourself. (See the next paragraph for examples of each type.) Regardless of your choice, the action you propose should be narrow and must be designed to address and/or bring awareness to the issue. You will produce a proposal that provides your rationale for the project, based on concepts discussed in required course readings. However, you will not actually implement the project (although you may do so in the future if you’d like). We recommend that you focus on a social-justice action that is local and manageable, something that you would actually be able to implement in the near future. Types of proposals: Collective social-justice proposals can propose a creative product (e.g., an art exhibition, poetry collection, fashion show, music CD, or film), an activist organization (e.g., a nonprofit organization or association), or an activist event (e.g., a political march or demonstration). Personal Action Social-Justice projects can also focus on a creative product, an activist organization, or an activist event; examples include creating an information/resource sheet that can be shared on social media, giving a short presentation at an organization you are a member of (or have access to), creating a YouTube video regarding your social justice issue, or volunteering at a local organization that addresses your social justice issue. The proposals must address a specific issue explored during the semester in our course. For example, a creative project proposal might propose to develop a series of murals for Denton or another local city, or a proposal for an organization might involve starting a nonprofit birthing center in a local city for low-income mothers. The opportunities are endless, so be creative! Assignment: After selecting a social justice issue to serve as the focus for your activism, you should identify and analyze specific course readings that can be related to your selection. Case Law Analysis - Intellectual Property In this unit, you will select a case law pertaining to the topic of intellectual property. Each case law analysis allows you to express yourself as clearly and fully as possible in dissecting a court decision. The purpose of the assignment is two-fold: 1. To give you the opportunity to read a real court decision. 2. To challenge you to think about how you would have decided the case. In your case law analyses, you must be able to navigate the court's decision and summarize it; you are not expected to act as a judge or an advocate. Using your selected court decision, prepare an analysis that responds to the following: 1. Articulates the importance, context, purpose, and relevance of law in a business environment: . RESEARCH PROPOSAL Community Driven Urban Design: Social Practice Tactics for Addressing Issues of the Built Environment ABSTRACT: Several professionals in the field of architecture and urban design employ creative tactics focused on social impact, civic dialogue, and grass roots placemaking. Drawing on socially responsible urban design theory, as well as principles of arts- based civic engagement and social change, these efforts have gained momentum in the 21st century due to a variety of economic, governmental, social and technological factors. This research capstone will include an extensive literature review through two courses – PPPM 523 Urban Revitalization and an independent reading course on “bottom-up” urban design with Professor Philip Speranza – as well as web-based document analysis of select case studies. Only by knowing the people, their history, values, problems, and concerns will you be able to gain an understanding of the role you can play in their lives. In preparation for the final project in this course where you will write a grant proposal with an accompanying presentation, you will need to develop a clear understanding of the community you seek to serve with your project. In this assignment, you will construct a specific service project that meets the needs of the particular community it engages. Use a variety of sources to establish a preliminary picture of the community in order to gauge the concerns of actual members within the community itself. Do the following: Compile research from both scholarly as well as local sources such as newspaper articles, interviews, town-meeting notes, etc., to develop a “big picture” of the community. Conduct research, including interviews, questionnaires, and surveys, in the field to supplement this information if such information will help in further developing your understanding of the community. Here are some topics to help guide your research: History: When was the community started? Why was it started? What has been the main economic base for the community? Has it changed since its founding? If so, how has this affected the community? What about the history of minority groups in the area? People: Who are the important people (elected officials, church leaders, community leaders, etc.)? Who works with these individuals to support their efforts (community organizations, churches, non-profit organizations, local governments, etc.)? Groups: What are the various groups within the community (geographic, social, racial, ethnic, etc.)? Who represents the interests of each?
