This document summarizes a project on the difficulties with English reading among 6th standard students. The project was conducted by P. Chandrasekaran, a B.A., B.Ed teacher of English at P.U.M. School in Erode district, Tamil Nadu. Some of the difficulties identified were that the students knew the alphabets but not the phonetic sounds and there was a fear of English along with different spelling methods between Tamil and English. The solutions proposed were to teach phonetic sounds with oral practice, teach the relationship between Tamil letters and sounds, underline vowels when reading words, teach sight words, provide separate practice for the tongue, and start reading lessons with easy syllables.
