Students of Year 9 engaged in a passion project as a part of the 2015 Marsden Creative Inquiry Symposium are attempting to make a difference for others -to become 'Solutionaries'
2. Introduction
Many children living in poverty throughout New Zealand are living
without basic necessities such as toothbrushes and tooth paste.
We believe that this issue is too important to ignore. We have decided
to make mini essentials packages, supplied with a toothbrush and tooth
paste.
We first plan to do some fundraisers to be able to buy the dental
essentials. We will earn money to buy these essentials by fundraising
through things like bake sales. But first we need your help.
We plan to make two different packages, one for boys and one for girls.
We would like to give these to children throughout the Wellington and
Hutt areas.
Our main audience are young children who live in families throughout
New Zealand who can't afford these dental products. Without having
sensible dental hygiene, diseases and illnesses such as gum disease,
tooth loss, dementia, pneumonia, and many more can occur.
Do we really want the children of New Zealand to be getting this sick all
because of a small act not being put in place?
If our idea were to be successful we would like to spread this concept
further and expand to regions across the country. We need your help.
3. So go “like” our page on Facebook and spread the news. You'll
find updates and information about our idea!
4. We also have a blog which we have made on BlogSpot which contains
information about fundraisers, events and what we will be getting up to
in the next few weeks.
5. What we plan to do about this
problem/future plans.
First of all we need to fundraise.
We think that we will organise a bake sale
so we can fund the bags, string, labels,
stickers etc. To cover the toothbrushes and
toothpastes we plan to have a school mufti
day.
We will make the packages and deliver
them to low decile schools. The packages
will be given to the children in these
schools who actually need the product.
If our idea is successful we plan to expand
to regions throughout New Zealand and get
volunteers on board. We can not do this by
ourselves. We need your help.
6. What you can do to help:
There are many ways you and you're friends can help make our idea a
reality. You can start by coming to the fundraisers and donating money,
or even just ‘liking’ our Facebook page.
‘Liking’ our Facebook page means that other people can see it and
realise what the big issue it is. You can also help by telling people about
it and spreading the issue. You can also come to the mufti day that we
are in the process of planning.
7. What we have achieved so far:
We have spent a lot of time working out
the cost of the toothpaste and
toothbrushes plus the money that we
need to borrow for the sausage sizzle.
After a lot of time on the calaulator we
have resolved to planning a bake sale,
with the price of each item being a
toothbrush and paste tube. We have
also made some samples of the
packages. We have also made a
facebook page and a blog which has all
the information about our idea.
8. Inside the packs:
Inside our dental packages, we plan
to provide a tube of toothpaste and
a toothbrush along with a small
instruction card on how to properly
brush your teeth.
9. We are in the process of organizing a mufti
day with Mrs. Field. The cost of the mufti day
for the students will be to bring in a
toothbrush and toothpaste tube.
This means that we will get over 600 kids
toothbrushes and paste. We plan to organize
a prize for the class that brings in the most
toothbrushes and paste!
Get excited! This is planned to be on the last
week of school
