Compound Nouns
Compound nouns are expressions made of two or more words.
They are used with suffixes (the same suffix as onun – i / ı / ü / u) in Turkish. The
suffix is added to the last word. If the last letter of the last word is a vowel, you add –
s – between the word and the suffix. For example:

There is & Quantity
The word “var” is “There is / are” in Turkish. For example:
Bir ev var. There is a house.
Evler var. There are (some) houses.

The word “var mı?” is “Is / are there?”. For example:

The Present Tense (Affirmative)
The suffix for the present tense in Turkish is – yor –. For example:
O kitap okuyor. He is reading a book.
O kahve yapıyor. He is making a coffee.
O TV izliyor. He is watching a film.
This verb form is used for the present continuous tense, simple present tense and
present perfect tense in English. For example:
O şimdi kitap okuyor. He is reading a book now.
O her zaman kitap okuyor. He always reads books.
O 2 saattir kitap okuyor. He has been reading a book for 2 hours.
Learn the verb forms below.
If the verb (root) ends with a vowel, the suffix is – yor. For example:
Uyumak To sleep
O uyu – yor. He is sleeping.
Okumak To read
O oku – yor. He is reading.
If the verb (root) ends with a consonant, the suffix– iyor / ıyor / üyor / uyor. For
example:
Içmek To drink
O iç – iyor. He is drinking.
Yapmak To do, make
O yap – ıyor. He is doing / making.
