You Better Believe it!
We may often think about belief as simply a magnificent invitation that Jesus has
extended to the whole world, just as He does in John 7:37-39. But did you know that belief
in Jesus is not only an invitation, but also a command of Jesus?
Jesus declared to people in Mark 1:15, âThe time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of
God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.â Here Jesus actually commands
non-disciples to believe, not merely suggests it. Mark 1:1 clarifies that the person, life, and
teachings of Jesus are the Gospel that people are commanded to believe. In addition to
this, Jesus also commands those who are His disciples to continue to believe in Him (John
14:1; 1 John 3:23-24). Now why is it important that believing in Jesus is not only an
invitation, but also a command?
For this reason: Faith or belief in Jesus is often portrayed as being before and
separate from obedience in the religious world today. As the extremely prominent modern
theologian John McArthur said, âFaith itself is complete before one work of obedience
ever issues forth.â In other words, obedience comes after faith, not at the same time as
faith. This is a common line of teaching in regards to faith. But is this what Jesus actually
teaches?
As mentioned before, Jesus commanded people to believe in the Gospel (Mark
1:15), and to believe in Him (John 14:1; 1 John 3:23-24). So, when people believe in Jesus
as He commands people to do, are they obeying a command of Jesus? The obvious answer
is yes! The stunning truth from Jesusâ teaching reveals this: You cannot believe in Jesus
without beginning to obey Him, because He commands people to believe! So, we see that
belief and the first steps of obedience cannot be separated. They happen simultaneously.
Listen to how Jesus ties belief and obedience together: âHe who believes in the Son
has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God
abides on himâ (John 3:36). You would think that Jesus would say here that the opposite
of belief is disbelief, or unbelief. But Jesus teaches us here that belief and obedience are so
tied together, that the opposite of belief is also disobedience. This makes sense, because
Jesus commands people to believe in Him, and to not do so is not only disbelief, but also
disobedience to Jesusâ command.
Elsewhere in Godâs Word, faith and obedience are portrayed as always coexisting
hand in hand. Acts 6:7c says that ââŠa great many of the priests were becoming obedient
to the faith.â Here, faith and obedience are joined together in describing conversion.
Romans 16:25-26 says that the ââŠgospelâŠhas been made known to all the nations,
leading to obedience of faithâŠâ Again, faith and obedience together describe conversion.
So we see from Godâs Word that belief and obedience are inseparable, because belief is a
command of Jesus that is to be obeyed!
Let us strive to help other people see that belief in Jesus is not merely a suggestion
or invitation from Jesus to the world, but is also Jesusâ command to people (Mk. 1:15). As
the old saying goes, âYou better believe it!â
