THERE IS A GOD
“In past generations He (God) allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways. Yet he did not leave him-
self without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your
hearts with food and gladness”(Acts 14:16-17).
I teach a 9th
grade Bible class at Jefferson Christian Academy, and recently one of my students was
reading the above passage aloud in class. As he read the word, “rain” it became hard to hear him as the
heavens broke forth in a deluge and the metal roof above us coincidentally revealed the loud witness of
God. The irony was not lost on all of us as we began to experience the scripture come to life. This passage
is a simple proof delivered almost 2000 years ago to people who questioned God’s existence. It rings true
for us today and helps us know that there is a God.
Rain is a powerful evidence for God because it could not simply happen by chance. In scripture, Job
found wisdom through nature and recognized that God was all knowing, but we are limited. When discuss-
ing the way to wisdom, Job said, “God understands the way to it (wisdom v.22), and he knows its place.
For he looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens. When he gave to the wind its
weight and apportioned the waters by measure, when he made a decree for the rain and a way for the light-
ning of the thunder, then he saw it and declared it; he established it, and searched it out (Job 28:23-27).
Job is speaking of the rainwater cycle when he describes the waters that are apportioned by measure and
the rain that has been decreed. The ocean provides the vapor for the clouds, but the ocean is not dried up.
The rain falls, but the ocean is never filled.
Solomon described this phenomenon: “The wind blows to the south and goes around to the north;
around and around goes the wind, and on its circuits the wind returns. All streams run to the sea, but the
sea is not full; to the place where the streams flow, there they flow again” (Ecclesiastes 1:6-7).
Scientists can understand this process and provide data so our meteorologists can provide weather fore-
casts, but no person can create something this powerful. Rain is therefore an authoritative example of
God’s design in this world. God had another spiritual example in mind when it came to rain.
God’s Word is like the rain as it falls on those who hear it and nourishes them. The prophet Isaiah de-
scribes the purpose of the rain in watering the earth and compares this to a spiritual cycle found with
God’s Word.
“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be
that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:9-11).
God sends His word out and it is not useless. His word helps others to know Him and some will seek to
obey what they read. Those who obey will share the Good News they have learned with others, helping at
least one more person see that there is a God.

.The Loyalty of Christ
Our last article ended with writing of Christ’s loyalty
to God’s word when He was tempted by Satan. Jesus’
response to each temptation was to quote from God’s
word the passage that would show why it would be
wrong to do what Satan commanded. It has been pointed
out that about 10% of what Jesus said that is recorded in
the New Testament is a quotation from the Old Testa-
ment. For example Jesus would refer those who ques-
tioned Him about anything by saying, “Have ye not
read?” In fact we have 6 examples of this in Matthew
and Mark’s gospel accounts (Mt. 12:3, 5; 19:4; 22: 31;
Mk. 12:10; 12:26). But there are numerous other pas-
sages where Jesus would refer the people back to the
scriptures to learn the will of God (Mt. 8:4; Mk. 1:44;
7:10; 10:3; 12:26; Lk. 24:7). Jesus also referred the
people to the old law commanding them to “keep the
commandments” (Mt. 19:17). Christ requires of us that
we also need to be loyal to His will today.
Lastly we need to remember that Jesus was
loyal to his disciples. In fact Christ has never failed any of
His disciples, in spite of the fact that we often fail Him.
In the great Sermon on the Mount Jesus said,
“Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?'
or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32
"For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your
heavenly Father knows that you need all these
things. 33 "But seek first the kingdom of God and His
righteousness, and all these things shall be added to
you.” God knows the needs of His children and He has
always cared for them. Long ago David said, “I have
been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the
righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging
bread” (Psa. 37:25). Those early disciples could vouch
for God’s constant care. Jesus reminded them of the
time He had sent them out “without money bag, knap-
sack, and sandals,” and He asked them, “did you lack
anything?" So they said, "Nothing" (Lk. 22:35).
His promise to be with them “always,” (Mt.
28:20) has never failed. When the apostle Paul was in
prison in Rome and was soon to stand trial before Nero,
He wrote to Timothy urging him to come to him shortly
for he acknowledged that at his first defense all had for-
saken him. Then Paul added, “But the Lord stood with
me and strengthened me, so that the message might
be preached fully through me, and that all the Gen-
tiles might hear. And I was delivered out of the
mouth of the lion” (2 Tim. 4:17).
Jesus’ concern for and His loyalty to His disci-
ples was not affected by His person troubles. Before the
last Passover that Jesus would observe with his disci-
ples, John tells us, “when Jesus knew that his hour
was come that he should depart out of this world
unto the Father, having loved his own which were in
the world, he loved them unto the end” (Jn. 13:1).
The truth of this is seen in the confrontation with that
army that came out to arrest Jesus and He said to them,
“I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek
Me, let these go their way” (Jn. 18:8). Jesus was loyal
to His disciples seeking their welfare and not His own.
