There is a reminder in the rain; each drop represents a potential flood.
My wife and I lived in Scotland where the average annual rain fall is more than
4 times than that of Seattle. While living there, we saw rain most days. We saw
it do so in some unique ways: down, up, and sideways.
In fact, we ditched the umbrella because the wind often turned it inside
out, rendering it useless. We experienced liquid sunshine as freezing, misting
or bucketing. We literally had a lifetime of the stuff in our 3-year stay.
I frequently found time to ponder and muse about my feelings for pre-
cipitation, especially while caught in it. Rain feels better when you think of it
as thawed snowflakes. It is a natural equalizer, as rain is no respecter of per-
sons. From the richest man on Wall Street, to the homeless man beside a wall
on a street, all will get caught in the rain. This is a beautiful reminder every
day that man is intrinsically no better and no worse than his neighbor. We are
all in the same boat simply floating on raindrops that are holding hands. Rain
is shown as a great equalizer in the scriptures:
âYou have heard that it was said, âYou shall love your neighbor and
hate your enemy.â But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who
persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he
makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and
on the unjust (Matthew 5:43-45). The first time we understand that God sent
the rain, it was because of the unjust. Godâs patience waited in the days of
Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons,
were brought safely through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now
saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a
good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into
heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers
having been subjected to him (1 Peter 3:20-22). God decided to cleanse the
earth from sin through a flood. He chooses to save us from sin today through
the saving waters of baptism (v.21). Salvation is obviously not the water alone,
just like the water did not save Noah alone. His obedience in building the ark
and the water saved him from the surrounding sin. Today there are those who
are just and unjust and every knee will bow to the sender of the rain. May we
think of this as we go out into the elements this week. May we strive to be an
example to the just and the unjust.
There is a reminder in the rain.

Christian Ethics â The Problem of Drinking
In our last article we ended looking at some of the
warnings in the Bible about the dangers of drinking. One
other passage I want all to consider is Hosea 4:11 where
Hosea warns that alcohol can take away our understand-
ing. âWine and new wine take away the understand-
ingâ (RSV). But the dangers of alcohol are not just in
what it can do to the physical body as bad as that is. The
real danger is what alcohol can do to our souls! Those
who are practicing alcoholics cannot enter into the king-
dom of God. Paul, in writing to the churches in Corinth
and in Galatia warned of this danger stating that neither
âthieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor
extortioners will inherit the kingdom of Godâ (1 Cor.
6:10), and âenvy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and
the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told
you in time past, that those who practice such things will
not inherit the kingdom of Godâ (Gal. 5:21).
In todayâs world where drinking is so prevalently
abused, these warnings from the Bible should take on
added force. Surely the only defendable Christian posi-
tion is that of total abstinence from alcoholic beverages.
But I know that there will always be people who will ob-
ject to this idea of not drinking any alcoholic beverages. I
know that many people have used various verses from
the Bible to try to âproveâ that drinking is alright, and I
want to consider some of them now.
Jesus Turned Water into Wine
This happened at a wedding feast in Cana of Gali-
lee and it was the first miracle that Jesus did. He had
commanded that six water pots (that were used for the
act of purifying) be filled to the brim with water. When this
was done He commanded that some of the contents be
drawn out and given to the ruler of the feast. After drink-
ing it the ruler proclaimed that it was the best wine! A
Catholic in commenting on this passage, said, âJesus
was the bartender for the wedding feast in Cana.â How-
ever, there is no evidence that this was an alcoholic drink
that Jesus had created. The Greek word that is trans-
lated as âwineâ is oinos. This word was used to refer to
both the alcoholic drink and to grape juice. The fact that
we today use the word âwineâ to refer to an alcoholic
drink does not mean that the Jews did the same. We
cannot impose our definitions upon them. Words may
change in their meanings. In the King James Version of 1
Thess. 4:15 Paul said, âFor this we say unto you by the
word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain
unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which
are asleep.â The English word âpreventâ in this verse did
not mean then what it means today. Today it means âto
keep from happening.â In the English of 1611 it meant
âcome before, or precede.â The word wine was used in
Isaiah 65:8 of the juice âwhile it is still in the cluster.â
