Pelling
1. Pelling
• Pelling, a beautifully located hill at a height of 6800ft initially covered with
wild thick jungle providing hideouts and shelter to many indigenous wild
animals of that period including Wildman( may not be yeti though).
Slowly this gentle ridge attracted cattle herders, shepherds and some
mediators allowing human habitation around it . This ridge being located
in between two old Buddhist monasteries (Pemayangtse and
Sangacholing) in took no long time to develop into a full fledged village
named Pelling remained from the name of an old monastery Pemaling
choeling . Today, this little village Pelling has become the best chosen
tourist destination in Sikkim due to its scenic location and the advantage
of having the closest view of world third highest mountain Mt. Khang –
Chen-Dzonga and other snow peaks from here. More than that Pelling
remains the centre where all the breath taking tourist spots of West
Sikkim can be easily covered in different optional sightseeing tours
without involving long tiring drives as each of these spots are within the
distance of 40 kms.
2. Pemayangtse Monastery
• Pemayangtse Monastery is considered as one
of the oldest and premier monastery in
Sikkim. It is situated in Pelling and is nearly
120 kilometers from Gangtok in West Sikkim
district.
3. Rabdantse Ruins
• The Rabdantse ruins is situated close to
Pemayangtse Monastery. Rabdentse was the
second capital of Sikkim from 1670 to 1814
and was destroyed by the frequent invading
Nepalese army. The left over is the ruins of the
palace and the chortens and has turned to an
archeological site. It can be reached by a short
walk from Pelling or Pemayangtse Monastery.
4. Khecheopari Lake
• It is located in West Sikkim district nearly 35
kilometers from Pelling / Pemayangtse. This
lake is considered as a sacred with Maghe
Purne and Chho - Tsho festival held every year.
It is served by two perennial and five seasonal
inlet. The depth of the lake reaches slightly
over eleven meters with an average depth of
nearly seven meters.
5. Singshore Bridge / Uttarey
• It is just four kilometers drive from Uttaray
said to be the 2nd highest bridge in Asia. It
lays nearly 300 meters above the ground and
is 260 meters long. Watching the base /
ground from middle of the bridge is thrilling /
fascinating.
6. Sangachoeling Monastery
• Among all the monasteries of Sikkim
Pemayangtse and Sangacholing is regarded as
the most prestigious one. It is known for its
colour, intricacy and the architecture. It is
believed that the Sangachoeling monastery
was designed by the late Dongzin Rimpoche
over five years.
7. Rock Garden
• Sewaro Rock Garden or just rock garden was
developed by the tourism department and
well maintained with gardens, pools and
zigzag foot paths among the rocks. Other
amenities like swimming yard, viewpoints and
cafeteria are also there for the guest to enjoy
the stay.
