2. Für Elise by Ludwig Van Beethoven
Ludwig Van Beethoven (1770-1827 )
 Born in Bonn, Germany.
 Beethoven began piano and violin lessons with
his father at a very young age.
 Went to Vienna, meet the great composer Mozart
and Haydn. Beethoven learnt various style from
them and he created his own style.
 Late 20s, he began to suffer from hearing loss. Age
of 50, he had become completely deaf.
 A very successful composer. Composed romantic
and classical music.
 9 symphonies, 1 opera, 32 piano sonatas, 16 string quartets and other solo
instrument.

3. Für Elise
 Therese Malfatti, Beethoven’s student.
 He fell in love with her.
 At one night, Beethoven wanted to propose marriage to her. So he
composed a music especially for her.
 Für elise meaning ‘For Therese’.
 They were going to marry at that time but Therese's father objected. She
was married in 1816 to Baron Von Drosdick.

4. Music Analysis
-Rhythm-
 Entire piece is in 3/8 time.
 The A and B sections of the piece consist of sixteenth notes. The sixteenth
notes offer a spiraling quality to the melody.
 These sections are contrasted by the C, D and Transition sections:
 C : slower moving.
 1st T : elaborates on C section. Increases the speed and enhances the
spinning quality of the A and B sections.
 D : brings an immense contrast to all other sections by maintaining
the sixteenth note drive in the bass while slowing down the
rhythmic values.
 2nd T : brings the listener back to spiraling feeling, this time using
sixteenth note triplets.

 No voice. Only piano instrument.
 The melody consists of rises and falls.
 Melody line is in the repetition of the A and B sections throughout the
piece.

• Written in a sectional form. 5 different sections (A, B, C, D and T) . Total 17
sections.
• Begin and end with A section and alternates between various contrasting sections.
• Most of the sections move directly back and forth between each other with the
exception of the C and D sections. These sections move into a transitional passage
before returning back to the main theme (A section).
• Occasionally, Beethoven slightly altered the repeated sections as they progress
through the piece.
