Saving Our Planet From Pollution
• Our earth contains a huge variety of valuable resources. An
abundant supply of fresh water, forests, and wild animals
provides humans with a very viable habitat. However, as we
have become industrialized and our population has
expanded rapidly, we have encroached upon the flora and
fauna in a destructive way. Rivers have become polluted
and thousands of species of animals have been driven to
extinction.
The world’s rainforests are being
destroyed at an alarming rate ruining
some of the world’s most important
habitats.
Discuss
Why should we be worried
about pollution, carbon dioxide,
and the destruction of the
rainforests?
Right Click to Pause
or Go Back
Our polar caps are melting at the
fastest rate in history.
Industrial smoke spews large amounts
of carbon dioxide and chemical
pollutants into our air every day.
Old tires dumped in the oceans
are not biodegradable.
Discussion
Man made products are discarded and end up floating
in huge areas of the ocean. What are the products
that people dump in the ocean rather than recycle?
Millions of automobiles add
pollution to our atmosphere.
Failure to control our environment
will have deadly consequences.
Class Discussion
•What kind of deadly consequences do
you think will result from the
continued pollution of our planet?
As our planet becomes
more populated, we use
more resources and
create more air and
water pollution. Forests
and wild life areas are
removed to make room
for towns and cities.
When this occurs, plants
and animals are
displaced and habitats
changed dramatically.
Discussion
Why does it matter if some species
become extinct? Don’t we already
have too many wild creatures
making it difficult for us to enjoy the
forests.
• What can we do to save
endangered species?
1. The habitats of some
plants and animals become
seriously altered or
destroyed as a result of
human activity. When this
occurs, species become
endangered or extinct.
Since plants and animals
are interdependent, food
chains can be broken and
other species affected
negatively. The extinction
of one animal or plant
species greatly affects the
survival of others.
Class Discussion
•In what way would the rapidly increasing
world population create problems for future
generations?
•Could a decreasing population create
problems for a country? Explain
• The population of the world in
1927 was 2 billion. By 2012, the
world population reached 7
billion people. This explosion of
the population along with the
industrialization of the world
has put an enormous stress on
the earth’s resources. Although
the rate of population growth
has declined, experts predict
that the world population will
reach 10 billion people within
the next 35 years.
Class Discussion
•Will our earth be able to provide enough water,
food, and clean air to support an exploding world
population?
•Are we doomed to become extinct?
• Many of the products and
wrappings that we use in the
modern world are not
biodegradable and, as a result,
will pollute our landfills and
oceans for hundreds of years to
come. In addition, fertilizers,
insecticides, and pharmaceutical
drugs will remain in our oceans
and fresh water supply.
Class Discussion
•What can be done to seriously reduce
the pollution problem?
What can be done to save our
planet?
• What kind of world do
we want to live in? How
can we preserve the
purity of the earth and
its resources? How can
we take action to help
solve this problem?
Every time you vote and
every time you buy a
product you can ask
yourself, “How will my
decision affect the
future of my planet”?
Class Discussion
Should convenience be more important than
the survival of the planet? Should laws be
passed to outlaw plastic bags?
Plastic containers are not
biodegradable but can be
recycled and re-used.
• Young people who want to help preserve the resources of
the earth for the future can get involved in many different
ways. Two college students from the United States
proposed a creative project to use plastic garbage from
the ocean to build and sell high quality skateboards. They
were funded by a college and the government in Chile to
clear old fishing nets off the beaches and convert them
into plastic pellets usable in the manufacture of very cool
skateboards.
Recycling is a no-brainer. You can
profit monetarily and help save the
planet at the same time. If you think
about it, this is a definite win-win for
everyone.
If everyone gets involved, we can
still save our beautiful planet!

Problem Solving
•Apply your problem solving skills to
the following real world problem.
The Problem
Meet in small groups and identify
possible solutions to this problem.
On April 1, 2015, a world conference of experts present a scientific research report that
predicts that the planet will have extensive problems by the year 2030 unless major
changes are made. There will be severe shortages of fresh drinking water and nutritious
food. Oceans and lakes will be so contaminated that food sources will be very limited.
Most wild animals will be endangered or extinct. The rates of serious diseases such as
cancer will reach epidemic levels. The air will be difficult to breathe in most regions.
Most of you will be in your early thirties and have young children. Develop a plan of
action to help save the planet for you and your families.
Report Back to Class
•Share each small group’s ideas on
how to save what is left of the
planet. Try to arrive at a class
consensus about the best solutions
to this critical problem.

Dean r berry saving our planet revised 6 8-18

  • 1. Saving Our Planet. By Dean Berry, Ed. D Gregg Berry, B. A.
  • 2. •Free PowerPoint Version at •Slideshare.com •Type PPT title or dean r berry
  • 3. Saving Our Planet From Pollution
  • 4. • Our earth contains a huge variety of valuable resources. An abundant supply of fresh water, forests, and wild animals provides humans with a very viable habitat. However, as we have become industrialized and our population has expanded rapidly, we have encroached upon the flora and fauna in a destructive way. Rivers have become polluted and thousands of species of animals have been driven to extinction.
  • 5. The world’s rainforests are being destroyed at an alarming rate ruining some of the world’s most important habitats.
  • 6. Discuss Why should we be worried about pollution, carbon dioxide, and the destruction of the rainforests? Right Click to Pause or Go Back
  • 7. Our polar caps are melting at the fastest rate in history.
  • 8. Industrial smoke spews large amounts of carbon dioxide and chemical pollutants into our air every day.
  • 9. Old tires dumped in the oceans are not biodegradable.
  • 10. Discussion Man made products are discarded and end up floating in huge areas of the ocean. What are the products that people dump in the ocean rather than recycle?
  • 11.
  • 12. Millions of automobiles add pollution to our atmosphere.
  • 13. Failure to control our environment will have deadly consequences.
  • 14. Class Discussion •What kind of deadly consequences do you think will result from the continued pollution of our planet?
  • 15. As our planet becomes more populated, we use more resources and create more air and water pollution. Forests and wild life areas are removed to make room for towns and cities. When this occurs, plants and animals are displaced and habitats changed dramatically.
  • 16. Discussion Why does it matter if some species become extinct? Don’t we already have too many wild creatures making it difficult for us to enjoy the forests. • What can we do to save endangered species?
  • 17. 1. The habitats of some plants and animals become seriously altered or destroyed as a result of human activity. When this occurs, species become endangered or extinct. Since plants and animals are interdependent, food chains can be broken and other species affected negatively. The extinction of one animal or plant species greatly affects the survival of others.
  • 18.
  • 19. Class Discussion •In what way would the rapidly increasing world population create problems for future generations? •Could a decreasing population create problems for a country? Explain
  • 20. • The population of the world in 1927 was 2 billion. By 2012, the world population reached 7 billion people. This explosion of the population along with the industrialization of the world has put an enormous stress on the earth’s resources. Although the rate of population growth has declined, experts predict that the world population will reach 10 billion people within the next 35 years.
  • 21. Class Discussion •Will our earth be able to provide enough water, food, and clean air to support an exploding world population? •Are we doomed to become extinct?
  • 22. • Many of the products and wrappings that we use in the modern world are not biodegradable and, as a result, will pollute our landfills and oceans for hundreds of years to come. In addition, fertilizers, insecticides, and pharmaceutical drugs will remain in our oceans and fresh water supply.
  • 23.
  • 24.
  • 25. Class Discussion •What can be done to seriously reduce the pollution problem?
  • 26. What can be done to save our planet?
  • 27. • What kind of world do we want to live in? How can we preserve the purity of the earth and its resources? How can we take action to help solve this problem? Every time you vote and every time you buy a product you can ask yourself, “How will my decision affect the future of my planet”?
  • 28. Class Discussion Should convenience be more important than the survival of the planet? Should laws be passed to outlaw plastic bags?
  • 29. Plastic containers are not biodegradable but can be recycled and re-used.
  • 30. • Young people who want to help preserve the resources of the earth for the future can get involved in many different ways. Two college students from the United States proposed a creative project to use plastic garbage from the ocean to build and sell high quality skateboards. They were funded by a college and the government in Chile to clear old fishing nets off the beaches and convert them into plastic pellets usable in the manufacture of very cool skateboards.
  • 31.
  • 32. Recycling is a no-brainer. You can profit monetarily and help save the planet at the same time. If you think about it, this is a definite win-win for everyone.
  • 33. If everyone gets involved, we can still save our beautiful planet!
  • 34. Class Check-up and Review Raise your green card if you believe the statement is true or your red card if you think it is false.
  • 35. True or False 1 Since most people in the world are choosing to have smaller families, the population of the world has decreased slightly during the last three years.
