EDF, Fives and the Institut de la réindustrialisation are all
acting in favor of industrial activity, in France and in
other countries. In order to better analyze industrial
trends, they did support this project, wich was initiated by
Fives, to create a monitoring tool tracking industrial
investments in the factories of the future worldwide. In
2016, a platform has been created to record industrial
investments and to rank each investment alongside six
Factory of the Future criteria.
In this platform, R&D, logistics, energy and
manufacturing projects announced worldwide (industrial
investment over $5 million worth, greenfield or
brownfield project) are tracked through 200 000 sources,
on a daily basis.
For each project that we include in the database, we try to
collect information about location, investor, amounts
invested, jobs created, surface, production nature and
capacity, customers, suppliers…
The information is structured in such a way that users can
instantly obtain statistics and trends sorted by product,
sector, country etc.
In this report, we offer our readers our analysis of the
most important trends as they appear from our 2017 data.
3
Towards the Industry of the Future
The aim of our project is by capturing industrial investments
and to analyze their characteristics, contributing to enhance
innovation within the world industrial landscape.
Each project we detect is scored alongside six criteria defined
by Fives Observatory of the Plant of the Future, and EDF :
- Flexibility: the ability to switch from a product to
another, enabling made-to-order manufacturing,
- Digitalization: the introduction of technologies such as
IoT, robotics, automation,
- Energy efficiency: every measure taken to lower energy
consumption compared with usual norms,
- Social efforts: measures undertaken for operations,
through working conditions, health and safety concern,
training, education and wages…,
- Territorial efforts: decisions aiming at improving the
relations between a production site and local communities
and stakeholders, such as favoring local suppliers, funding
schools, contributing to local social projects…,
- Environmental efforts: reducing carbon footprint and
pollution, water preservation…
Each criterion is ranked 0 (no mention in the news describing
the investment), 1 (some measures described) or 2
(quantitative objectives defined for the criterion considered or
insistence on it). Adding those 0-2 scores over six criteria
gives a total Industry of the Future score wich varies from 0
to 12.

The insights provided by our data are only interesting if
our data correctly reflects worldwide trends.
For a better apraisal of the accuracy of our data, some
points must be known:
- We proceed mainly through a screening of English,
French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and German
sources: adding other langages such as Chinese,
Japanese or Russian will improve, in the future, our
ability to detect medium-sized projects in China,
Japan, Russia and other countries (the largest
projects being covered by international sources);
- We are beginning this exercise and it is too soon to
correlate our data with official statistics. It is much
too early to comment temporal evolutions, except
for massive facts and evolutions;
- Our qualitative analysis of the Factory of the
Future criteria rely upon the information provided
by the media. We do not contact companies in
order to check and complete the information
collected. We think that it is already interesting to
know what the media and companies think worthy
of communicating to the public: this does reflect
their preoccupations, theirs goals and their
commitment towards new industrial practices;
4
A real time tool
- We track announcements, and those
announcements are made some months or years
before production begins. Since we are tracking the
news on a continuous basis, we adjust the
information we have when, for instance, a planned
investment is canceled. From our experience with a
previous database about investment in France, we
think that the overall data reflects correctly the
general trends, even if some news are incomplete
or inaccurate.
Thus, we think that ou real time tool, with all these
limitations, provide precious information about
industrial trends worldwide.

DEFI&Co
The world industrial investments monitor is supported the project Defi&Co.
This project, which has been awarded 7.8 M€ by the “Programme Investissement
d’Avenir” (PIA), aims to develop, during 5 years, innovative courses leading to
qualifications in the following domains:
- Industry of the Future (Product Lifecycle Management, Additive
Manufacturing, Predictive Maintenance…);
- Construction of the future (Smart Buildings, Building Information Modelling,
Energy Performance…);
- New jobs linked to Data Processing in these two domains.
These developments are based on research works, and more than 10.000 students, trainees,
apprentices… are expected to enrol in these courses. Special actions will be undertaken to
facilitate women inclusion in these new jobs.
This project will benefit from the inputs of the 11 partners having signed the consortium
agreement and of the 20 others having signed support letters.

The Institut de la réindustrialisation has been created in 2015 by two engineering schools, EPF and
CESI, and two professional associations: GIM and Syntec Ingenierie. The Institut aims at producing
and publicising knowledge and expertise about the future of industry and its skills and competencies.
The Institut engaged many projects to this aim, promoting topics such as attracting youths toward
industrial careers, and especially women. The Institut participate in, or organise, conferences,
workshops and other opportunities to debate and discuss those topics.

Trendeo was created in 2007 to collect data in real time about economic tendencies and trends: investment and jobs
were the first events we tracked in France, followed by startups, fundraising and now industrial investments
worldwide in a new database.
In France, we find a good correlation between our data and data collected by the national institute of statistics
(INSEE). The data published by Trendeo about the French economy is regularly used by various customers and
newspapers as an indicator of the status of the French economy.
Different customers access our data daily to monitor economic activities under territorial or sectoral angles. Other
customers, among them a global leading consultancy, use our worldwide industrial data for research activities.

2017 results, an overview
Throughout 162 countries, we collected information about 3 412 projects in 2017, for a total amount of 1 026
billion dollars. The average investment is 444 M$. There is an important weight of big projects, so that the median
amount of investment is 58 M$. Almost 600 000 jobs should be created by those investments.
Those numbers are lower than the numbers for the data collected in 2016. As explained in the following pages,
industrial investment projects takes several years between announcement and beginning of production, so we think
it is not useful to comment year on year variations without a backlog of at least three years of data.
2016 2017
Number of projects 3 623 3 412
Investment (M$) 1 257 369 1 026 587
Average investment 497 444
Median investment 75 58
Jobs 1 025 400 598 923
10/03/2018 12
There are three dates we try to track for each project: announcement date (for instance, 2017/9/21 : “ Germany's
Daimler said it will invest $1 billion to expand its U.S.-based Mercedes-Benz plant in Alabama to start building electric sport-utility
vehicles there from about 2020. ”), beginning of construction date (such as “Cornerstone Laid for New Hydropower Plant
” ) and then beginning of production date (“ Mazda Starts Production at New Plant in Mexico” ).
12
Time to production
Those three dates are three different
opportunities to detect a project through press
coverage, and it is not always easy to obtain
those three different dates. Sometimes, a project
is announced only at the beginning of
construction, or even only when production
starts. Hence, many projects have been decided
in 2017 that we will only track later.
Those questions are specially important with big
projects (see figure).
For those reasons, we think that, specially as our
database begins, year on year evolution are
difficult to interpret adequately.
TOTAL TIME BETWEEN ANNOUNCEMENT DATE AND PLANNED BEGINNING OF
PRODUCTION, IN YEARS, BY PROJECT SIZE.
For this figure, we selected a subset of the database, with only projects where the
three dates, and amount invested, were known. It shows, for instance, that 15% of
projects over 5 Bln$ take 6 years between announcement date and beginning of
production.
The average time between announcement
and beginning of production is:
- 1,8 years for projects under 250 M$,
- 4,3 years for projects over 250 M$,
- 5,7 years for projects over 1 Bln$
- 7 years for projects over 5 Bln$.

The table below shows origins and destinations, by continent, for the industrial investments tracked in 2017.
Continents are in different positions towards outward investment. Asia has the highest level of closeness: almost
93% of investments received comes from the same continent. Europe is second on this measure, with almost 88%.
On the contrary, only 41% of investments in Africa comes from Africa.
Europe is the first net investor worldwide: there are more investments funded by Europe worldwide than
investments in Europe, whether locally funded or not, to the tunes of 80 billion dollars. Asia is in the same
situation, but for a sum of 40 billion dollars only. Americas receives, on the other hand, 65 billion dollars more
than the amounts invested by Americas worldwide.

Breakdown of industrial investments projects, by amount invested
(Lecture: 116 projects between 501 M$ and 1 billion totalled 82 billion dollars).
10/03/2018 17
Manufacturing projects represent 62% of the total number of projects, 73% of jobs created but barely more than
half the amounts invested.
Activities linked to energy, such as power generation and mining and quarrying, represent altogether 18% of projects
detected, and 39% of the amounts invested (and less than 5% of jobs created).
Asia comes first in most major activities, in terms of percentage of amounts invested: manufacturing, power
generation, logistics, R&D and waste treatment. Africa is the first continent for mining and quarrying. Americas
come first for data centers with 82% of world investment, and for water treatment. Oceania is ahead for agricultural
activities, forestry and fishing. Europe does not hold any first position.

The share of projects with at least one Factory of the Future mark progressed slightly, from 40,1% to 41,6%. No project
obtained an 11 or 12 total score. Out of 6 Factory of the Future criteria, digitization is still the most frequently found. Social
efforts are still the least present in our marks: only 6,2% of the projects tracked in 2017 obtained a 1 or 2 mark for this criterion.

Each project can receive a score for six Factory of the Future criterion (see slide 3). For each criterion, the score can take three
values: 0 means the criterion is not mentionned, 1 means something is said but not precise or detailed, 2 means there is a higher
commitment or detailed and measured efforts for the particular criterion. The six scores for each project are added to obtain a

The next two slides show that the Factory of the Future score is unevenly spread, as much geographically
than by sector.
Geographically, the following map shows the average Factory of the Future score, for projects lead by
companies sorted by their continent of origin. The result is that Northern Europe companies have the best
average score, and companies from Middle Africa the worst score. This score can be influenced by many
factors: the nationality of investors, by sector or by the legislation of the destination country. More detailed
statistical analysis should be conducted to weight each factor. It seems that scores also follow GDP levels:
the most developed countries have better scores.
The analysis by sector puts beverages at the first place, mainly because of their environmental efforts (an
example with a Jas Hennessy bottling project: “The facility is equipped with the most up-to-date technology, including
sophisticated traceability systems and a high-speed bottling line that will be able to fill 240 000 bottles (20 000 9-litre cases) a
day. Over 200 companies were used to help with its construction, 50% of them local, and it has been built with the environment
and sustainability in mind. It consumes 40% less energy than a ‘standard’ plant of this type and 92% of the waste it will
produce can be recycled.”.
R&D facilities often get scores for their architectural qualities (“The ESS site will be an attractive and
environmentally sustainable site, according to the project promoters, and a world-class research centre with an elegant
architectural design in tune with the surrounding landscape. ESS will promote biodiversity in the area as the site neighbours
parkland and the typical rural landscape of the Scania region of southern Sweden. As part of the ESS “zero impact vision”,
where the goal is to avoid emitting any pollutants into the environment, a system for treating polluted storm water will be
designed.”).
At the other end of the scale, investments with low Factory of the future scores are in the mining and
logistics sectors, (warehousing, oil & gas mining, coal mining, wholesale trade…) and apparel.

Manufacturing of trucks
Capacity: 45 000 / year
Jobs: ND MUSD: 553
Factory of the Future score: 9
This is a world-class, state-of-the-art truck manufacturing facility with a high proportion of robotisation – including 95% of the cab welding and
95% of the painting – to ensure the highest quality standards and production consistency. The factory operates on a modular system, using a
single assembly line with the ability to provide the right products at the right time to meet market demand. The merged heavy and extra-heavy
assembly line does one-piece-at-a-time production, instead of batch production. This allows the plant to only produce trucks that will be sold. The
new production method also allows for shorter lead times, a shorter production line, and a better response to market fluctuations. The plant is
built using many environment-friendly features. These include using renewable energy, natural light, and LED bulbs to lower electricity usage,
while workers benefit from efficient air conditioning, which cools or warms the air only up to the height of the operators, thereby saving energy.
The plant also captures rainwater and makes ample use of natural light. CO2 emissions have been cut by 20% and water consumption is reduced
by 65% compared to a similar plant without these latest environmental initiatives..

Waste to energy
Capacity: 400 000 t/ year – 63 MW
Jobs: ND MUSD: 632
Factory of the Future score: 8
The plant can process all types of waste and still recover a high amount of energy. It utilises more than 100% of the fuel’s energy content and has
a 28% electrical efficiency rate. Because of advanced filtration and other technologies, sulphur emission is expected to be reduced by 99.5% and
NOx by about 90%, and it is claimed to be the cleanest incineration plant in the world. It is designed to change between operating modes,
producing 0-63 MW electricity and 157-247 MW district heating, depending on the local heat demand and power price. It produces more clean
water than it uses. The building’s facade is made up of staggered metal planters that vary in size and shape to carefully control solar exposure.
When it rains, each planter will drain into the one below it to sustain a flourishing vegetated wall. The plant has been celebrated as “part of the
city”, providing social as well as physical infrastructure.

Sodium bicarbonate
Capacity: 70 000 tons / year
Jobs: ND MUSD: 40
Factory of the Future score: 7
Manufacturing will adhere to principles and technology developed by Novacap's subsidiary Novacarb at its facility in Nancy (France). The
approach -developed by Novacarb as part of its 17 MUSD "BIanca Project" - combines manufacturing technologies and worker training. The
plant can increase its capacity in the future to 120,000 tonnes/year via a debottlenecking process (depending on market conditions). The Singapore
plant’s output could also potentially go towards animal nutrition and flue gas cleaning applications. Sodium bicarbonate is well appropriate to
capture acidic gases such as sulfur dioxide and hydrochloric acids released through the incineration of household wastes in municipal wastes
incinerators e.g., allowing the release of cleaned flue gases compliant to local regulations. The company will obtain its raw materials for its
Singapore plant through various local or regional partners. Demineralised water – NEWater – will be provided to the plant by Public Utilities
Board in Singapore, while the carbon dioxide needed for production will come from various industrial production units, which will be good for
sustainable development.

TechnicoFlor (France)
Extraction of essential oil
Capacity: ND
Jobs: ND MUSD: 11
Factory of the Future score: 7
All production, mixing, packaging, quality control and shipments will be carried out in the new buildings. The company has designed fully
robotised lines for its new units. They will feature several new generation robots, including a powder weighing machine, allowing ultra-precise
dosages, regardless the particles size. The production and packaging will be carried out by gravity in order to avoid using pumps. Eventually, the
construction of an unloading dock featuring three special doors adapted to trailers will facilitate deliveries. This investment should allow the
French designer of aromatic composition to address the challenges linked to its growth and to better serve its customers in particular with
shortened delivery lead times, which are expected to drop down to 4 or 5 days of processing - irrespective of product type and volumes ordered.
“We needed a new production unit to anticipate our growth and support our development. Our future production centre and its state-of-the-art equipment is designed to
optimize the delivery lead time. It will meet stringent environmental quality standards, in line with our environmental policy,” explains François-Patrick Sabater,
President of TechnicoFlor. Indeed, the company has been involved for many years in a demanding eco-environmental approach. In the Valley of
Nepal, for instance, TechnicoFlor supports Man & Nature, a non-profit organisation that helps farmers from the Bardia National Park and their
families. This initiative allows the company to collect an ultra-premium quality of essential oils (Chamomile, Ginger, Curcuma, Lemongrass,
Coriander, Mint, Lemongrass, Eucalyptus, Lantana, Calamus, Basil ...) while helping local populations and contributing to the protection of the
fauna. The new building will thus meet France’s HQE (High Environmental Quality) standards, and will feature a rainwater collecting system and a
green roof.

Trendeo’s analysts collect information throughout a panel of 200 000 international press sources. Every relevant
project detected through some keyword expressions is analyzed and described along some 40 fields such as sector,
capacity, customers, jobs created, completion date and so on. Relevant projects, in this database, are: manufacturing,
R&D, logistics or energy projects with more than $30 million investment.
Every data collected is analysed by our analysts, and a final appreciation on the six Factory of the Future criteria is
expressed through our scoring. Of course, our score rely heavily upon the content of the informations given by
investors. Some investors will adopt very advanced practices but will not communicate about them, and other can be
tempted to over communicate about their practices. Our project aims, in this first stage, at detecting which practices
are said to be the best ones, and at collecting a database of those practices.
Our data are opened to research projects dedicated to Industry of the Future studies.
This database is an extension of a database Trendeo created in 2009 for France, which tracks job creating
investments (and job suppressions) in this country. Since 2009, we observed a good correlation between net job
creation as seen through Trendeo’s database and French official statistics. Our aim at the global level is to replicate
this tool, to reflect the trends of the world industry, both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Industrial investments worldwide 2017

  • 1. World Industrial Investment Monitor Factory of the Future tracking tool Supported by the Defi&Co investment program Do not distribute before 20/03/2018
  • 3. 10/03/2018 3 EDF, Fives and the Institut de la réindustrialisation are all acting in favor of industrial activity, in France and in other countries. In order to better analyze industrial trends, they did support this project, wich was initiated by Fives, to create a monitoring tool tracking industrial investments in the factories of the future worldwide. In 2016, a platform has been created to record industrial investments and to rank each investment alongside six Factory of the Future criteria. In this platform, R&D, logistics, energy and manufacturing projects announced worldwide (industrial investment over $5 million worth, greenfield or brownfield project) are tracked through 200 000 sources, on a daily basis. For each project that we include in the database, we try to collect information about location, investor, amounts invested, jobs created, surface, production nature and capacity, customers, suppliers… The information is structured in such a way that users can instantly obtain statistics and trends sorted by product, sector, country etc. In this report, we offer our readers our analysis of the most important trends as they appear from our 2017 data. 3 Towards the Industry of the Future The aim of our project is by capturing industrial investments and to analyze their characteristics, contributing to enhance innovation within the world industrial landscape. Each project we detect is scored alongside six criteria defined by Fives Observatory of the Plant of the Future, and EDF : - Flexibility: the ability to switch from a product to another, enabling made-to-order manufacturing, - Digitalization: the introduction of technologies such as IoT, robotics, automation, - Energy efficiency: every measure taken to lower energy consumption compared with usual norms, - Social efforts: measures undertaken for operations, through working conditions, health and safety concern, training, education and wages…, - Territorial efforts: decisions aiming at improving the relations between a production site and local communities and stakeholders, such as favoring local suppliers, funding schools, contributing to local social projects…, - Environmental efforts: reducing carbon footprint and pollution, water preservation… Each criterion is ranked 0 (no mention in the news describing the investment), 1 (some measures described) or 2 (quantitative objectives defined for the criterion considered or insistence on it). Adding those 0-2 scores over six criteria gives a total Industry of the Future score wich varies from 0 to 12.
  • 4. 10/03/2018 4 The insights provided by our data are only interesting if our data correctly reflects worldwide trends. For a better apraisal of the accuracy of our data, some points must be known: - We proceed mainly through a screening of English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and German sources: adding other langages such as Chinese, Japanese or Russian will improve, in the future, our ability to detect medium-sized projects in China, Japan, Russia and other countries (the largest projects being covered by international sources); - We are beginning this exercise and it is too soon to correlate our data with official statistics. It is much too early to comment temporal evolutions, except for massive facts and evolutions; - Our qualitative analysis of the Factory of the Future criteria rely upon the information provided by the media. We do not contact companies in order to check and complete the information collected. We think that it is already interesting to know what the media and companies think worthy of communicating to the public: this does reflect their preoccupations, theirs goals and their commitment towards new industrial practices; 4 A real time tool - We track announcements, and those announcements are made some months or years before production begins. Since we are tracking the news on a continuous basis, we adjust the information we have when, for instance, a planned investment is canceled. From our experience with a previous database about investment in France, we think that the overall data reflects correctly the general trends, even if some news are incomplete or inaccurate. Thus, we think that ou real time tool, with all these limitations, provide precious information about industrial trends worldwide.
  • 5. 10/03/2018 55 DEFI&Co The world industrial investments monitor is supported the project Defi&Co. This project, which has been awarded 7.8 M€ by the “Programme Investissement d’Avenir” (PIA), aims to develop, during 5 years, innovative courses leading to qualifications in the following domains: - Industry of the Future (Product Lifecycle Management, Additive Manufacturing, Predictive Maintenance…); - Construction of the future (Smart Buildings, Building Information Modelling, Energy Performance…); - New jobs linked to Data Processing in these two domains. These developments are based on research works, and more than 10.000 students, trainees, apprentices… are expected to enrol in these courses. Special actions will be undertaken to facilitate women inclusion in these new jobs. This project will benefit from the inputs of the 11 partners having signed the consortium agreement and of the 20 others having signed support letters.
  • 6. 10/03/2018 66 EDF EDF, a world leader in low carbon energy production Against the backdrop of the energy transition, EDF has defined a strategy called CAP 2030 which underpins the Group’s goal of: Being an efficient, responsible electricity company that champions low-carbon growth. As a global leader in low-carbon energy, the EDF Group covers every sector of expertise, from generation to trading and transmission grids. EDF builds on the expertise of its people, its R&D and engineering skills, its experience as a leading industry operator and the attentive support of its customers to deliver competitive solutions that successfully reconcile economic growth with climate protection. As today's increasingly digital world dramatically changes the way we produce and consume, research into electricity generation, transmission and consumption is of decisive importance. To succeed in the energy transition, more than 2,000 EDF’s R&D division employees (representing 27 nationalities) are currently working on many different projects designed simultaneously to deliver low-carbon power generation, smarter energy transmission grids and more responsible energy consumption. The missions of EDF’s R&D are structured around 4 key priorities.
  • 7. 10/03/2018 7 As an industrial engineering Group, Fives designs and supplies machines, process equipment and production lines for the world’s largest industrials including the aluminium, steel, glass, automotive, aerospace, logistics, cement and minerals, energy and sugar sectors. Located in over 30 countries and with nearly 8,400 employees, Fives is known for its technological expertise and competence in executing international projects. Fives’ multi-sector expertise gives a global vision of the industry which provides a continuous source of innovation. The effectiveness of its R&D programs enables Fives to design forward-thinking industrial solutions that anticipate clients’ needs in terms of profitability, performance, safety and compliance with environmental standards. This strategy is backed by a human resources policy that is focused on the individual, encourages initiative-taking, technical excellence and team spirit. In 2012, to celebrate its bicentennial, the Group launched the Fives Plants of the Future Observatory. Confronted by the new economic, social and environmental challenges faced by industry and industrial plants in the 21st century, this Observatory is committed to initiating an open discussion about the industry of tomorrow and the plants of the future and to disseminate these views to public. 7 FIVES
  • 8. 10/03/2018 8 The Institut de la réindustrialisation has been created in 2015 by two engineering schools, EPF and CESI, and two professional associations: GIM and Syntec Ingenierie. The Institut aims at producing and publicising knowledge and expertise about the future of industry and its skills and competencies. The Institut engaged many projects to this aim, promoting topics such as attracting youths toward industrial careers, and especially women. The Institut participate in, or organise, conferences, workshops and other opportunities to debate and discuss those topics. 8 L’Institut de la réindustrialisation
  • 9. 10/03/2018 9 Trendeo was created in 2007 to collect data in real time about economic tendencies and trends: investment and jobs were the first events we tracked in France, followed by startups, fundraising and now industrial investments worldwide in a new database. In France, we find a good correlation between our data and data collected by the national institute of statistics (INSEE). The data published by Trendeo about the French economy is regularly used by various customers and newspapers as an indicator of the status of the French economy. Different customers access our data daily to monitor economic activities under territorial or sectoral angles. Other customers, among them a global leading consultancy, use our worldwide industrial data for research activities. 9 Trendeo
  • 11. 10/03/2018 1111 2017 results, an overview Throughout 162 countries, we collected information about 3 412 projects in 2017, for a total amount of 1 026 billion dollars. The average investment is 444 M$. There is an important weight of big projects, so that the median amount of investment is 58 M$. Almost 600 000 jobs should be created by those investments. Those numbers are lower than the numbers for the data collected in 2016. As explained in the following pages, industrial investment projects takes several years between announcement and beginning of production, so we think it is not useful to comment year on year variations without a backlog of at least three years of data. 2016 2017 Number of projects 3 623 3 412 Investment (M$) 1 257 369 1 026 587 Average investment 497 444 Median investment 75 58 Jobs 1 025 400 598 923
  • 12. 10/03/2018 12 There are three dates we try to track for each project: announcement date (for instance, 2017/9/21 : “ Germany's Daimler said it will invest $1 billion to expand its U.S.-based Mercedes-Benz plant in Alabama to start building electric sport-utility vehicles there from about 2020. ”), beginning of construction date (such as “Cornerstone Laid for New Hydropower Plant ” ) and then beginning of production date (“ Mazda Starts Production at New Plant in Mexico” ). 12 Time to production Those three dates are three different opportunities to detect a project through press coverage, and it is not always easy to obtain those three different dates. Sometimes, a project is announced only at the beginning of construction, or even only when production starts. Hence, many projects have been decided in 2017 that we will only track later. Those questions are specially important with big projects (see figure). For those reasons, we think that, specially as our database begins, year on year evolution are difficult to interpret adequately. TOTAL TIME BETWEEN ANNOUNCEMENT DATE AND PLANNED BEGINNING OF PRODUCTION, IN YEARS, BY PROJECT SIZE. For this figure, we selected a subset of the database, with only projects where the three dates, and amount invested, were known. It shows, for instance, that 15% of projects over 5 Bln$ take 6 years between announcement date and beginning of production. The average time between announcement and beginning of production is: - 1,8 years for projects under 250 M$, - 4,3 years for projects over 250 M$, - 5,7 years for projects over 1 Bln$ - 7 years for projects over 5 Bln$.

  • 14. 10/03/2018 14 The table below shows origins and destinations, by continent, for the industrial investments tracked in 2017. Continents are in different positions towards outward investment. Asia has the highest level of closeness: almost 93% of investments received comes from the same continent. Europe is second on this measure, with almost 88%. On the contrary, only 41% of investments in Africa comes from Africa. Europe is the first net investor worldwide: there are more investments funded by Europe worldwide than investments in Europe, whether locally funded or not, to the tunes of 80 billion dollars. Asia is in the same situation, but for a sum of 40 billion dollars only. • 17. 10/03/2018 17 Manufacturing projects represent 62% of the total number of projects, 73% of jobs created but barely more than half the amounts invested. Activities linked to energy, such as power generation and mining and quarrying, represent altogether 18% of projects detected, and 39% of the amounts invested (and less than 5% of jobs created). Asia comes first in most major activities, in terms of percentage of amounts invested: manufacturing, power generation, logistics, R&D and waste treatment. • 22. 10/03/2018 2222 Factory of the Future score The share of projects with at least one Factory of the Future mark progressed slightly, from 40,1% to 41,6%. No project obtained an 11 or 12 total score. Out of 6 Factory of the Future criteria, digitization is still the most frequently found. Social efforts are still the least present in our marks: only 6,2% of the projects tracked in 2017 obtained a 1 or 2 mark for this criterion. 15 7 4 2 35 Repartition of 2017 Factory of the Future scores. Lecture: 215 projects received a total score of 3. Share of projects having received a score of 1 or 2 in each one of the Factory of the Future criterion. Each project can receive a score for six Factory of the Future criterion (see slide 3). For each criterion, the score can take three values: 0 means the criterion is not mentionned, 1 means something is said but not precise or detailed, 2 means there is a higher commitment or detailed and measured efforts for the particular criterion. The six scores for each project are added to obtain a global Factory of the Future sscore, which can hence vary from 0 to 12 (6 criteria with best score of 2). 2016 2017 Digitization 17,5% 17,1% Flexibility 16,6% 14,9% Environmental efforts 12,0% 13,7% Energy efficiency 8,3% 9,6% Territorial efforts 10,0% 8,3% Social efforts 5,0% 6,2% Share of projects with at least one mark 40,1% 41,6%
  • 23. 10/03/2018 23 The next two slides show that the Factory of the Future score is unevenly spread, as much geographically than by sector. Geographically, the following map shows the average Factory of the Future score, for projects lead by companies sorted by their continent of origin. The result is that Northern Europe companies have the best average score, and companies from Middle Africa the worst score. This score can be influenced by many factors: the nationality of investors, by sector or by the legislation of the destination country. More detailed statistical analysis should be conducted to weight each factor. It seems that scores also follow GDP levels: the most developed countries have better scores. The analysis by sector puts beverages at the first place, mainly because of their environmental efforts (an example with a Jas Hennessy bottling project: “The facility is equipped with the most up-to-date technology, including sophisticated traceability systems and a high-speed bottling line that will be able to fill 240 000 bottles (20 000 9-litre cases) a day. Over 200 companies were used to help with its construction, 50% of them local, and it has been built with the environment and sustainability in mind. It consumes 40% less energy than a ‘standard’ plant of this type and 92% of the waste it will produce can be recycled.”. R&D facilities often get scores for their architectural qualities (“The ESS site will be an attractive and environmentally sustainable site, according to the project promoters, and a world-class research centre with an elegant architectural design in tune with the surrounding landscape. ESS will promote biodiversity in the area as the site neighbours parkland and the typical rural landscape of the Scania region of southern Sweden. As part of the ESS “zero impact vision”, where the goal is to avoid emitting any pollutants into the environment, a system for treating polluted storm water will be designed.”). At the other end of the scale, investments with low Factory of the future scores are in the mining and logistics sectors, (warehousing, oil & gas mining, coal mining, wholesale trade…) and apparel. 23 Score: geography and sectors

  • 27. 10/03/2018 2727 Hino Motors (Japan) Manufacturing of trucks Capacity: 45 000 / year Jobs: ND MUSD: 553 Factory of the Future score: 9 This is a world-class, state-of-the-art truck manufacturing facility with a high proportion of robotisation – including 95% of the cab welding and 95% of the painting – to ensure the highest quality standards and production consistency. The factory operates on a modular system, using a single assembly line with the ability to provide the right products at the right time to meet market demand. The merged heavy and extra-heavy assembly line does one-piece-at-a-time production, instead of batch production. This allows the plant to only produce trucks that will be sold. The new production method also allows for shorter lead times, a shorter production line, and a better response to market fluctuations. The plant is built using many environment-friendly features. These include using renewable energy, natural light, and LED bulbs to lower electricity usage, while workers benefit from efficient air conditioning, which cools or warms the air only up to the height of the operators, thereby saving energy. The plant also captures rainwater and makes ample use of natural light. CO2 emissions have been cut by 20% and water consumption is reduced by 65% compared to a similar plant without these latest environmental initiatives.. Every relevant project detected through some keyword expressions is analyzed and described along some 40 fields such as sector, capacity, customers, jobs created, completion date and so on. Relevant projects, in this database, are: manufacturing, R&D, logistics or energy projects with more than $30 million investment. Every data collected is analysed by our analysts, and a final appreciation on the six Factory of the Future criteria is expressed through our scoring. Of course, our score rely heavily upon the content of the informations given by investors. Some investors will adopt very advanced practices but will not communicate about them, and other can be tempted to over communicate about their practices. Our project aims, in this first stage, at detecting which practices are said to be the best ones, and at collecting a database of those practices. Our data are opened to research projects dedicated to Industry of the Future studies. This database is an extension of a database Trendeo created in 2009 for France, which tracks job creating investments (and job suppressions) in this country. Since 2009, we observed a good correlation between net job creation as seen through Trendeo’s database and French official statistics. Our aim at the global level is to replicate this tool, to reflect the trends of the world industry, both quantitatively and qualitatively. 55 Methodology
