2. Genre?
• The genre is and underground sub-genre of Hip Hop
called Grime.
• This is shown throughout the music promo through the
use of costume, as al of the guys in the video are
wearing full tracksuits and hats or hoods.
• Also shown through the movement of people , as there
are lots of hand signs and pointing at the camera,
typical of this genre of music.
• Moreover the location both in an estate and on a
rooftop are typical of a Hip Hop video as they’re areas
associated with the genre and bad reputations.
3.
4. Images relate to the lyrics?
• For some of the lyrics the images show them
following it literally, for example when Skepta
says “don’t care about the no smoking sign” as
he is pretending to smoke using his hands.
• Furthermore he stated “I role deep” meaning
that there is lots of people backing him, then
in the video there is lots of people standing
behind him.
5.
6. Images relate to music?
• The shots always cut on the beat especially in
the beginning where there is quick cuts on the
opening beats.
• Also the flashes are on the beat and when
there is a reverse on the track the images also
reverse. For example the phone call when the
men are moving up the stairs.
7.
8. How is the artist presented?
• Skepta is in the middle of all the shots throughout
the music video. He has close ups of his face as
well as him in front of a group of people.
• He is always in the front of the group and the
camera will always rotate around him even when
in a large group.
• Also there is lots of “product placement” of the
group he is in Boy Better Know BBK. This is shown
throughout through people wearing Hats and
balaclavas.
9.
10. Voyeuristic elements?
• There is an aspect of voyeuristic as there are
girls who are walking as if they are on a
catwalk show, however there isn't any
sexualisation of the girls as they are fully
clothed and majority of the shots are of them
walking. This is different as most hip hop
videos sexualise women.
11.
12. Intertextuality references?
• There are references in both the lyrics and the
images. The images show clear references to
other videos such as BBK.
• Also when the phone call plays it is
referencing the Brit awards where lots of
London hip hop artists were on stage with
Kanye West
13.
14. Mise-en-scene, camera shots, editing,
sound
• The setting is both an estate and a roof top which both give a
suspicious feeling. Also the clothing is dark and typical of hip hop
videos as there is lots of tracksuits, hoods, hats and balaclavas.
• The lighting goes from being bright natural light in the estate to
strong key light when its night time on the roof top.
• Majority of the shots are group shots where the camera is rotating
around the group but still focusing on skepta in the middle. But
there also close ups of skepta and the females at the beginning, by
the end it is just large group shots with lots of people.
• The editing mainly consist of cutting on the beat, and flashes on the
beat at the beginning. Also the use of the phone call is another use
of editing.
15. Any Narrative?
• There is no narrative to the video, it mainly
consists of people jumping to the lyrics and
beat. Its organized to make Skepta look like he
is backed by lots of people as there is loads of
people behind him throughout.
