1. The Wise Judge
• Once upon a time, Baghdad was ruled by
the Caliph by name Mustafa. One day, he
overheard some of his courtiers discussing
about a wise judge in his empire who
speedily dispensed justice.
tThe Caliph decided to himself find out the
truth by disguising himself as a merchant.

3. He rode a horse and travelled to the
city where the wise justice(Qazi)
held court everyday. Once inside the
city, the Caliph was approached by a
beggar for alms.
4. But, the beggar insisted that he drop him
on his horse to the market place.
5. The Caliph asked the beggar to
climb behind him on his horse. On
reaching the market place, the
Caliph asked the beggar to get down
from his horse as he had reached his
destination.
6. But, the wily old
beggar insisted that
it was the Caliph
who should get
down for the horse

9. The judge was attending to a
quarrel between a farmer and a
writer about a dumb slave.
10. The next case was a quarrel between
a butcher and an oil-merchant over
cheating of gold coins.

11. The beggar accused the merchant
robbing him of his horse before the
judge. The judge asked them to keep
horse in his stable and come the next
day to hear judgment.
12. The next day-The judge gave the
writer his slave and punished the farmer
with 50 strips for laying before a court of
law
13. Then the judge gave the butcher his
gold coins and merchant was
punished with two scores of lashes.
14. Finally, the judge asked them to follow the
stable to recognise the horse among several
others. In the end, the judge gave Mustapha-
the Caliph his horse and beggar 50 lashes.
15. In the end, everybody left the court.
The Caliph revealed to the judge his true
identity. On hearing it, the judge came
forward and bowed low and kissed the
hand of his master.
16. The judge revealed his wisdom
behind the judgment to the Caliph.
The Caliph wished the judge be given
his place after him.
