A hands-on approach was introduced by Giovanni Nisato, founding member of the Health Hacking Lab in Basel, where a growing number of enthusiastic volunteers gather to fix real world patients’ challenges.
5. “What if there were a way to…”
• Connect patient experiences to light exposure?
• Measure light data relevant for EPP patients?
• Provide remote monitoring, especially for children affected?
“Yes, that would make sense because of:
• Research: we could learn more about the disease
• Monitoring: maybe of interest, especially for children”

7. EPP-Companion on smartphone
Objectives: App to record events,
pain levels on body locations,
calendar, overview dashboard… using
“Open software” tools.
• Done: 5x “prototypes”, co-
developed with Rocco’s feedback
• Ongoing: code and test app (iOS
+Android), data management
• Next: real-life tests, connect to
light sensors hardware/ other
hacks…
8. Light sensor
Objectives: wearable, measures light quantitatively and qualitatively,
“open hardware” components
• Done: selected V1 components, first tests indoor, outdoors.
• Ongoing: data treatment, wireless connection to smartphone
• Next: connect to smartphone app; field test, integration …

9. What if…
We start
here…
We could have community-
based innovation in
healthcare?
…we explore
and
learn by doing…
… towards
developing
solutions
Patient Challenges Learning Hacks
11. What we are working on:
• App and wearable for EPP (talk today)
• Wearable for Type 1 diabetes children monitoring (ongoing)
• App for pediatric incontinence (already there… tweaking)
…
• Building the patient dialogue
• New members
• “test” hackathon
12. Our values
Patients are People first
Think with your hands
Bring your own energy
Accept Curiosity
Take care of yourself and others
Accept other people’s help
Carry your own weight, take on a load you can carry
Be respectful to others…and to yourself
Ask questions
Let yourself make some mistakes
Enjoy the process and … whatever works
