1.0 INTRODUCTION
The final year project is the culmination of the degree as it is a mandatory subject for
students to be awarded with Bachelor Degree. In the FYP, students are expected to undergo
research studies, which relate to the major course offered in the faculty. The final year project
consists of two parts; the first part FYP 1 is a prerequisite to the second part, FYP 2. The aim
of the FYP is to enhance the students’ knowledge and skills in solving problem through
structured project research in order to produce a competent and productive engineer.
It gives students a chance to demonstrate all they have learned. The project module is
very different from other modules. Although students are supervised, the onus is on the
student to define the problem boundaries, to investigate possible solutions, and to present the
results in writing, verbally and in action. Apart from an initial briefing session there are no
formal lectures to attend. Teaching consists of regular individual/small group meetings to
discuss progress. For assessment, students submit reports of their progress and final results,
and give in-person presentations and demonstrations of their work.
The project tests students' ability to design, engineer and evaluate quality systems,
research their chosen subject area, make good decisions, plan and execute a proper
methodology in problem solving, overcome unforeseen problems, work within constraints of
limited resources, work to a professional code of conduct and communicate technical
concepts both orally and in writing. To be successful, students need to plan, work
independently and ethically, identify basic entrepreneurship skills in project management,
estimate and manage their time and energy. These reports explain what is expected of both
students and supervisors, and how projects will be assessed.

2.0 LITERATURE REVIEW
Project management is “the application of management knowledge, skills, tools, and
techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements” (PMI, 2008). In short, it is
management to accomplish project goals/objectives. In long, it is management to (Nicholas &
Steyn, 2008):
ď‚· Define and execute everything necessary to complete a complex system of tasks.
ď‚· Achieve project end results that might be unique and unfamiliar.
ď‚· Can do it by target completion date, with constrained resources and with an
organization that is cross-functional and newly-formed.
Final Year Project gives students the chance to demonstrate all they have learned
throughout the study. The project module is very different from other modules. Although
students are supervised, the onus is on the student to define the problem boundaries, to
investigate possible solutions, and to present the results in writing, verbally and in action.
Apart from an initial briefing session there are no formal lectures to attend. Teaching consists
of regular individual/small group meetings to discuss progress. For assessment, students
submit reports of their progress and final results, and give in-person presentations and
demonstrations of their work.
Final Year project will take some times to be completed. Every single thing involves is
connected to each other. In order to complete all the final year project’s assignments, all
students must have their own planning to avoid delay and will affect the submission of the
report in future.
Therefore, project management for FYP is vital. It helps in helping students to have their
own planning. By applying the project management, students can estimate the duration they
need to complete their assignments. It is like a guideline for the students in completing their
assignments on time.
Besides that, project management will help the students on how to manage their FYP. For
example, they will know how to handle the problems that occur during the whole process. All
the assignments in class, tutorials and FYP could be arranged to avoid overlapping. The
students will manage to divide their time properly help to manage their schedule accordingly.

4.1 GANTT CHART (3.3) VS RESOURCE ALLOCATED GANTT CHART (4.0)
Gantt Chart 1 (3.3) Gantt Chart 2 (4.0)
1. Without considering the resources.
ď‚· Hence time-constrained since it
doesn’t involve slacks.
ď‚· The tasks are required to be finished
no later than a specified date. (Need to
finish within specified dates)
2. No free slacks are involved since the
resources are not considered
(Unlimited resources).
ď‚· Hence these tasks cannot be delayed,
must be finished before the due date.
ď‚· These tasks can be done fast but not
efficiently.
ď‚· This may also results in stress for the
students, since they want to rush to
finish the date line with so many tasks
crossed or intercepting against each
other within stipulated time.
1. Including the resources (Students,
Lecturer or Journals).
ď‚· The resources are assigned into the Gantt
chart, so it will provide (freedom) less
time constrains for the tasks to finish.
ď‚· Hence, the time will be become more
flexible and these tasks can be split to
postpone the activity within the schedule.
ď‚· But this may leads to delay or expansion
of the due date of the project.
2. Free slacks enable the splitting of tasks.
ď‚· These tasks can be interrupted or split so
that the part can be started later in the
schedule.
ď‚· When moving split tasks, we can choose
to move just a portion of the split task, or
we can choose to move the entire split
task with its gaps.
ď‚· Hence, free slacks are used to extend the
project end date which makes the project
more flexible.
ď‚· It is also can be done due to the
arrangement of the resources availability
especially if the project is resource
constrained. It may also associate with
waiting at when the tasks require more
resources than are available (Don’t have
sufficient resources.). Hence, it is called
the resource-dependent task.
3. The project is more sensitive compared
to other.
ď‚· Tasks especially with free slacks will be
moved around in order to reduce the
resource usage (Since it is resource
constrained).
ď‚· The sensitivity of the project can be
increased by using up all the free slacks.

5.0 PROJECT CLOSURE
Project monitoring is a significant part of project management. All project activities
should be carefully monitored while the project is being accomplished. This helps project
manager to keep informed of work progress, and apply timely correctives. It is essential that
project monitoring is simple and not time-consuming. Project monitoring software may really
help to simplify this process. It is necessary to define project goals and plan the activities
(Swapna, 2001). Project Closure consist of 5 types which are Normal; project was completed
and objective was met, Premature; completed with reduction in scope or parts, Perpetual;
which never ends (due to poor planning), Failed Project; completed but objective was not
met, Changed Priority; project was cancelled due to changes in priority. Closure also deals
with the final details of the project and provides a normal ending for all procedures, including
the delivery of the final product.
The close of the project is the final phase of the task, it’s the last turn of the project
life cycle, and like any other aspect of a project, it requires a process. Part of closing a project
is being able to plan and execute it. The key activities in project completion are gathering
project records; disseminating information to formalize acceptance of the product, service, or
project; and performing project closure. The type of project, which can be implemented based
on the suitability of our assignment, falls under Normal Project Closure. The tasks required to
close our project consist of arrange a post mortem, complete paperwork, release resources,
archive documents and lastly celebrate success. From this project closure, both the supervisor
and student are responsible in handling this task. The project will be delivered by the
completion of all task starting from briefing 1 (week 1) on FYP’s introduction until the final
submission of the FYP official report (week 16) in which a total duration of 15 weeks are
acquired to wrap things up for the accomplishment of it.
7
6.0 CONCLUSION
In chapter 1 describe the overall review of the project. The introduction is the first
section of Final Year Project (FYP) and the general thought of the FYP report is about. This
parts including research background, problem statement, objectives and research scope. For
the second section, the literature review is a comprehensive review of other published
findings on the studies form various material such as books, journal and online resources. The
sources are used as a guidance for the next phase in chapter 3. Chapter 3 describing on the
details of study planning, methods that are suitable for the project process from the beginning
until the end of the project.
Hence, the project management is an important tool in helping to conduct a project
with a good flow and effectiveness. Project management also involves in planning the project
to move specific activity toward completion and typically involves an ongoing activity.
Project management plan is expected to effectively and efficiently guide all aspects of a
project in final year project from start until finish, with the ideal goal of the delivering the
outcome on time and on budget. By having the project management, the project will be
finished on time because the delayed activity can be determining so that it can be a guide to
complete the project before the due date.

  • 3. 1.0 INTRODUCTION The final year project is the culmination of the degree as it is a mandatory subject for students to be awarded with Bachelor Degree. In the FYP, students are expected to undergo research studies, which relate to the major course offered in the faculty. The final year project consists of two parts; the first part FYP 1 is a prerequisite to the second part, FYP 2. The aim of the FYP is to enhance the students’ knowledge and skills in solving problem through structured project research in order to produce a competent and productive engineer. It gives students a chance to demonstrate all they have learned. The project module is very different from other modules. Although students are supervised, the onus is on the student to define the problem boundaries, to investigate possible solutions, and to present the results in writing, verbally and in action. Apart from an initial briefing session there are no formal lectures to attend. Teaching consists of regular individual/small group meetings to discuss progress. For assessment, students submit reports of their progress and final results, and give in-person presentations and demonstrations of their work. The project tests students' ability to design, engineer and evaluate quality systems, research their chosen subject area, make good decisions, plan and execute a proper methodology in problem solving, overcome unforeseen problems, work within constraints of limited resources, work to a professional code of conduct and communicate technical concepts both orally and in writing. To be successful, students need to plan, work independently and ethically, identify basic entrepreneurship skills in project management, estimate and manage their time and energy. These reports explain what is expected of both students and supervisors, and how projects will be assessed. 1
  • 4. 2.0 LITERATURE REVIEW Project management is “the application of management knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements” (PMI, 2008). In short, it is management to accomplish project goals/objectives. In long, it is management to (Nicholas & Steyn, 2008): ď‚· Define and execute everything necessary to complete a complex system of tasks. ď‚· Achieve project end results that might be unique and unfamiliar. ď‚· Can do it by target completion date, with constrained resources and with an organization that is cross-functional and newly-formed. Final Year Project gives students the chance to demonstrate all they have learned throughout the study. Final Year project will take some times to be completed. Every single thing involves is connected to each other. In order to complete all the final year project’s assignments, all students must have their own planning to avoid delay and will affect the submission of the report in future. Therefore, project management for FYP is vital. It helps in helping students to have their own planning. By applying the project management, students can estimate the duration they need to complete their assignments. It is like a guideline for the students in completing their assignments on time. Besides that, project management will help the students on how to manage their FYP. For example, they will know how to handle the problems that occur during the whole process. All the assignments in class, tutorials and FYP could be arranged to avoid overlapping. The students will manage to divide their time properly help to manage their schedule accordingly. 2

  • 7. 4.0 NEW FYP PROGRAM (CONSIDERING RESOURCES) 5
  • 8. 4.1 GANTT CHART (3.3) VS RESOURCE ALLOCATED GANTT CHART (4.0) Gantt Chart 1 (3.3) Gantt Chart 2 (4.0) 1. Without considering the resources. ď‚· Hence time-constrained since it doesn’t involve slacks. ď‚· The tasks are required to be finished no later than a specified date. (Need to finish within specified dates) 2. No free slacks are involved since the resources are not considered (Unlimited resources). ď‚· Hence these tasks cannot be delayed, must be finished before the due date. ď‚· These tasks can be done fast but not efficiently. ď‚· This may also results in stress for the students, since they want to rush to finish the date line with so many tasks crossed or intercepting against each other within stipulated time. 1. Including the resources (Students, Lecturer or Journals). ď‚· The resources are assigned into the Gantt chart, so it will provide (freedom) less time constrains for the tasks to finish. ď‚· Hence, the time will be become more flexible and these tasks can be split to postpone the activity within the schedule. ď‚· But this may leads to delay or expansion of the due date of the project. 2. Free slacks enable the splitting of tasks. ď‚· These tasks can be interrupted or split so that the part can be started later in the schedule. ď‚· When moving split tasks, we can choose to move just a portion of the split task, or we can choose to move the entire split task with its gaps. ď‚· Hence, free slacks are used to extend the project end date which makes the project more flexible. ď‚· It is also can be done due to the arrangement of the resources availability especially if the project is resource constrained. It may also associate with waiting at when the tasks require more resources than are available (Don’t have sufficient resources.). Hence, it is called the resource-dependent task. 3. The project is more sensitive compared to other. ď‚· Tasks especially with free slacks will be moved around in order to reduce the resource usage (Since it is resource constrained). ď‚· The sensitivity of the project can be increased by using up all the free slacks. 6
  • 9. 5.0 PROJECT CLOSURE Project monitoring is a significant part of project management. All project activities should be carefully monitored while the project is being accomplished. This helps project manager to keep informed of work progress, and apply timely correctives. It is essential that project monitoring is simple and not time-consuming. Project monitoring software may really help to simplify this process. It is necessary to define project goals and plan the activities (Swapna, 2001). Project Closure consist of 5 types which are Normal; project was completed and objective was met, Premature; completed with reduction in scope or parts, Perpetual; which never ends (due to poor planning), Failed Project; completed but objective was not met, Changed Priority; project was cancelled due to changes in priority. Closure also deals with the final details of the project and provides a normal ending for all procedures, including the delivery of the final product. The close of the project is the final phase of the task, it’s the last turn of the project life cycle, and like any other aspect of a project, it requires a process. Part of closing a project is being able to plan and execute it. The key activities in project completion are gathering project records; disseminating information to formalize acceptance of the product, service, or project; and performing project closure. The type of project, which can be implemented based on the suitability of our assignment, falls under Normal Project Closure. The tasks required to close our project consist of arrange a post mortem, complete paperwork, release resources, archive documents and lastly celebrate success. From this project closure, both the supervisor and student are responsible in handling this task. The project will be delivered by the completion of all task starting from briefing 1 (week 1) on FYP’s introduction until the final submission of the FYP official report (week 16) in which a total duration of 15 weeks are acquired to wrap things up for the accomplishment of it. 7
  • 10. 6.0 CONCLUSION In chapter 1 describe the overall review of the project. The introduction is the first section of Final Year Project (FYP) and the general thought of the FYP report is about. This parts including research background, problem statement, objectives and research scope. For the second section, the literature review is a comprehensive review of other published findings on the studies form various material such as books, journal and online resources. The sources are used as a guidance for the next phase in chapter 3. Chapter 3 describing on the details of study planning, methods that are suitable for the project process from the beginning until the end of the project. Hence, the project management is an important tool in helping to conduct a project with a good flow and effectiveness. Project management also involves in planning the project to move specific activity toward completion and typically involves an ongoing activity. Project management plan is expected to effectively and efficiently guide all aspects of a project in final year project from start until finish, with the ideal goal of the delivering the outcome on time and on budget. By having the project management, the project will be finished on time because the delayed activity can be determining so that it can be a guide to complete the project before the due date.
