Making (or not making) our world disaster resilient is our legacy. History will decide which legacy we actually leave. The keys to resilience: 1) know the disaster history of your region, 2) be well-prepared 3) have a warning system 4) have an evacuation plan 5) learn from every global experience and start over. The Carlton Complex Fire, a massive, lightning-caused wildfire in Washington State, is still out of control, burning houses, and forcing residents of Washington state and Canada to evacuate. The current situation: Gov. Jay Inslee said about 50 fires were burning in Washington, which has been wracked by hot, dry weather, gusting winds and lightning. Some 2,000 firefighters were working in the eastern part of the state, with about a dozen helicopters from the Department of Natural Resources and the National Guard.

Violent tornadoes ripped through the Midwest on Sunday, causing significant damage in several communities. But isn't tornado season supposed to be in the spring and summer? Turns out tornadoes are rare in November, but not unheard of. The worst November tornado event in U.S. history was in 2002. On Nov. 10-11 of that year, a major outbreak of severe weather and tornadoes occurred across the Tennessee and Ohio Valley regions, producing damage in 13 states. A total of 75 tornadoes touched down on Nov. 10, killing at least 36 people.

India may have dodged a bullet as Cyclone Phalin strikes Bay of Bengal 12 October 2013. Cyclone Phalin is one of the most powerful cyclones in history, yet the death toll reported as of 14 October only 21. 900,000 residents were evacuated to shelters in schools and government offices. Authorities also moved food and medicine close to affected areas before the storm. Those preparations now are credited with the huge reduction in casualties compared with 1999's Cyclone Orissa, which killed 10,000 and caused more than $2 billion in damage. The comparatively low mortality this time may be result of effective strategic planning and collaboration (i.e., working together on a common goal) for becoming cyclone disaster resilient

A focus on actions in 2015 will accelerate the transition from the past 14 years of global disaster proneness to global disaster resilience by 2020. A snaphot of our world circa 1st January 2015: 7+ billion people, and growing while Living and competing in an interconnected global economy, producing $60 trillion+ of products each year, and facing complex disasters every year that cause multi-billions in losses and reduce a community’s ability to withstand natural catastrophes. The challenge of our time in the 21st century: Protecting and preserving PEOPLE and COMMUNITIES from the potential disaster agents of natural hazards. The “best solution set” vis a vis the global policy framework to strengthen disaster resilience include (1) anticipate and plan for the full spectrum of what can happen; (2) to build capacity at the community level to strengthen disaster in the areas of preparedness, protection, early warning, emergency response, and recovery/reconstruction; (3) to be relentless in informing, educating, training, and building equity in all areas that constitute disaster resilience in all sectors of every community in every nation. WE KNOW WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO DO IT. But just knowing is not enough. Tangible action is essential to reach the urgent goal of global disaster resilience by 2020 and will require that all communities work strategically to implement a realistic set of scientific, technical, and political solutions nested within EXISTING administrative, legal, and economic constraints. Presentation courtesy of Dr Walter Hays, Global Alliance for Disaster Reduction.

Knowledge from hurricane disasters which occur annually in the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico and Western Pacific should be enough to make any nation susceptible to hurricanes adopt and implement policies that will facilitate disaster resilience. The people who know: 1) what to expect (e.g., storm surge, high-velocity winds, rain, flash floods, and landslides,), 2) where and when it will happen, and 3) what they should (and should not) do to prepare will survive. What is also needed is integration of scientific and technical solutions with political solutions for policies on preparedness, protection, early warning, emergency response, and recovery. The 8,530-foot-high mountain erupted early on Sunday, November 3rd, sending a vertical ash plume 7,000 feet into the air. This eruption prompted an evacuation of 1,500 people living within 3 km of the volcano. Until August, 2010, Sinabung had been inactive for 400 years. The August 2010 eruption led to an evacuation of 30,000 people. Part of the pacific “ring of fire,” indonesia has 127 active volcanoes as a result of complex subduction of the indo-australia and eurasiatectonic plates

This month, the Preparedness Forum released the workshop summary Preparedness, Response, and Recovery Considerations for Children and Families. The workshop examined existing tools and frameworks that can be modified to include children's needs; identified non-traditional child-serving partners and organizations that can be leveraged in planning to improve outcomes for children.. Available along with this report is a shareable infographic that captures speaker highlights and resources for parents, child care providers, schools and pediatricians, as well as a resource list of all tools and materials mentioned throughout the meeting.
