The document discusses plans for an interactive art installation at the August Wilson Center in Pittsburgh to coincide with the hosting of the G20 Summit. The installation aims to showcase Pittsburgh's culture and draw attention to the Center while highlighting themes related to the Summit such as globalization, sustainability, and international cooperation. It provides several conceptual ideas for the installation and discusses next steps which would include determining funding and the duration of the exhibit.
2. Pittsburgh will host the G-20 Summit September 24-25, 2009.
President Obama will chair this meeting of leaders from countries
around the world that represent 85 percent of the world’s economy.
At the Summit, leaders will discuss ways to assure a sustainable
recovery from the current global economic crisis.
3. Pittsburgh was selected because it has seen its share
of economic woes in the past, but through foresight
and investment has given birth to renewed industries
that are creating jobs of the future.
4. “From the standpoint of the conference, what we
find most exciting is the world spotlight. It gives us
an unprecedented opportunity to tell our story.”
Bill Flanagan
EVP, Corporate Relations with the Allegheny Conference on Community Development.
6. Robert McGrath, CEO of VisitPittsburgh,
put the estimated value of a convention that
brings 3,000 to 4,000 attendees to town at
approximately $8 million, but he expects the
value of the G-20 will be even higher than that.
8. With an extra 4,000 people downtown for the Summit,
housing our installation will draw extra attention to the center.
Diplomats and journalists from around the world will be
experiencing Pittsburgh culture for their first time.
Journalists are currently, and will continue to be, looking for
Pittsburgh-related stories to report.
The AWC is a great example of Pittsburgh’s cultural vibrancy
and deep ethnic roots.
11. Installation art takes into account the
viewer’s entire sensory experience.
The viewer goes beyond looking
at the piece. She becomes one with
the piece. The experience is often
transformative and motivational.
13. Sample Concept
Sphere of Influence
Thanks to the evolution of technology, individuals
are more empowered that ever before.
14. The Summit brings together the leaders of the
20 wealthiest countries to promote economic
sustainability and growth.
Through technological advances, change does not
have to occur through the actions of the powerful
few. Anyone can reach out and make a difference.

19. Sample Concept
Greening Pittsburgh
How can nature be part of a “green” city when it
is all built from concrete, steel and glass?
We’ll create an interactive display elements from
nature illuminating compelling truths about
globalization, wealth distribution, hunger, disease,
and climate change (to name a few) around the world.
20. Sample Concept
Jazz in Pittsburgh
Jazz is the conversation of music. Its improvisation
requires listening to others and then formulating a
thoughtful response on the spot.
In diplomacy, conversations follow much the same
set of principles. We’ll explore the interaction
between music, communication and collaboration
through the physical movements of people
experiencing the installation.
