D.A.R.E. Halton School Day With THE TORONTO MARLIES Join us on November 24th, 2010 for our 3rd annual event. 1
Maple Leaf Sports & D.A.R.E. Halton Back in 2007 D.A.R.E. Halton was contacted by representatives of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) about a possible partnership to assist in raising both awareness and money for the Drug Awareness Education Programm. Both DARE and MLSE share a common goal… to educate youth about drugs, alcohol and violence. In 2008 the MLSE AHL franchise Toronto Marlies asked for and received league approval to move a regular season game to 11:30am to allow schools to participate in the first DARE Day with The Toronto Marlies. This was no small feat and demonstrated a strong commitment on the part of both MSLE and the league to the DARE program.
The Event The DARE School Day with the Toronto Marlies is a full day event held at Ricoh Coliseum. The day begins in the morning with buses arriving at the school to pick up students. All buses are arranged by MLSE. Students are treated to a regular season AHL league game between the Toronto Marlies and the Grand Rapids Griffins. During the game students are also exposed to a series of Public Service Announcements on the big screen supporting the DARE curriculum. Between periods students can cheer on their own DARE officer competing in an on ice challenge. The scheduled end time of the game allows students to return to their pre-assigned busses for the return trip to their schools in time for the end of the school day.
Celebrate D.A.R.E. This event is a celebration of the DARE program in Halton Region and is endorsed by the Halton District Public School Board, The Halton District Catholic School Board and the Halton Regional Police Service. The game is not only attended by students and their teachers from both school boards but also by senior members of the Police Service as well as by senior representatives of both the Public and Catholic school Boards. And during the festivities the biggest applause is reserved for the Halton Police School Resource officers who teach the DARE program in the schools. This event helps to reinforce the special relationship that exists between the officers and the students. 4
5 More Than Just a Hockey Game D.A.R.E. and MLSE are committed to making this event more than just a hockey game. During the event the students are exposed to a series of messages that are an extension of the decision making skills they are taught as part of the DARE program. The presence of the School Resource Officers as well as other senior members of the Police Service at the game further position this event as an extension of the DARE curriculum. And proceeds from the game go directly into the DARE program in Halton region.
As with any event of this magnitude the first year was one of learning and not without it’s challenges. However in year two improvements and changes were made to better accommodate the logistics ofsuch a large single event. These included: ,[object Object]
Improved communication and logistics at Ricoh Coliseum. This allowed for a smooth and well coordinated drop off and pick up of students.
The start time of the game was moved from 11:30am in year one to 11:00am to accommodate bus schedules. The result was that the majority of students were able to remain for the entire game.,[object Object]
