with the interviewee to the left or right of the
screen and are shown in a medium shot,
close up, or big close up shot.
4. Here is an establishing shot of the Prison where
the documentary is set. After this shot, there is a
montage of a few images showing other areas of
the prison. It gives the audience an insight on
how enclosed the prison is.
5. Here is a tracking shot of a prisoner walking to
the cell. It also a handheld shot which gives the
impression we are actually behind him, imitating
the way he lives to see how it feels.
6. Handheld – following officers and prisoners in
the jail , filming CCTV camera of prisoner in cell,
criminal records
Zoom – title zooms closer
Tilt shot – camera lifts upwards showing the
height of the barbed wire outside prisoners
Big close up – showing interview
Long shot – prisoners in cells
7. Here is a long shot showing a prisoner in his cell,
this anchors the running theme of prison and
reveals the life they live which is what the
documentary is based on.
8. Prisoners interviews often done in their cell
Officers interviews often done in their office
Usually a plain background so the interviewee
is in main focus

Questions are asked on camera to the
prisoner (not like normal documentary)
Clock ticking in background
10. Montage – different shots cut showing
different areas of the prison
Cuts between each interview
11. Below is a piece of archive material that is not
filmed by the documenter. It is a zooming shot of
an image of one of the prisoners when they were
younger, whilst there is a voiceover over the top
of it, during his interview.
12. There is news paper articles that are shown
showing the stories of the prisoners.
At the beginning there is a voiceover of two
news presenters explaining the murder of
someone followed by the prisoners interview
showing the link there.
13. The main title has a black background, with a
simple white font. This has connotations that
prison life is very boring and plain, which
anchors the theme that is set throughout.
14. Here is a shot of an interview revealing the name
and relevance to the documentary below them in
simple white font. Again this follows the
conventional structure of interviews.
