Conventions of Chick Flick
Opening Sequences
Camera Angles
• Establishing shot - At the beginning of most chick flicks an establishing
shot is used to set the scene.
• Close up – Close up shots are used to show emotion, make up and
costumes.
Setting
• Most chick flicks are set in schools. For example mean girls.
• However some can be set in cities. In cities there are usually a lot of
shopping centres and this therefore lives up to the stereotype of girls
love shopping. If openings are set in shops it can draw the audience in
and engage them. Some films can also make the audience feel as if
they are involved. This is the gratification theory.
Music
• The music in chick flicks are generally up-beat, popular, well known
songs.
• The up beat music reflects the mood and atmosphere of the opening
sequence.
• This entertains the audience and makes them feel happy.
Characters
• The main characters of the film will be established in the opening
sequence.
• The main characters are usually really dramatic and girly.
• The main character/s will usually wear pink. The colour pink is
stereotypically for girls and therefore pink is usually worn.
• The storyline of the film is usually a scenario which girls could relate to.
Titles/text
• Titles are usually in pink colour. Pink is a stereotypically girly colour
and therefore fits in with the genre of chick flick.
• The font of the titles are typically fancy, swirly writing.
• This font portrays elegant female main characters. The fancy writing
fits in with the general fashion of chick flicks.
