BREAKING
THE PATTERN
Teacher Training
Supporting Motivated Teachers
And Promoting Impact
THE PROBLEM
THE PROBLEM
Almost every NGO and
Teacher Training Program
in Cambodia is…
PAYING $$$
people to attend
trainings
RIGHT
NOW:
RIGHT We are PAYING
NOW:
        $
RIGHT We are PAYING
NOW:
        $
                   zzz

             Even if they
             don’t pay
                $
             ATTENTION
RIGHT We are PAYING

    NOW:
                  $
z zzz
         SCHOOL

Or USE the Even if they
    training don’t pay
                          $
                       ATTENTION
And if they don’t
use the training,
we STILL
pay them and
give more
training!

Imagine:
A learning center for
MOTIVATED TEACHERS
A schedule of classes of
many different levels
REMEMBER:
MOTIVATED
TEACHERS ONLY!
The teacher would ONLY
be able to join if they
had 90% attendance or
higher for the 3 months
prior to the class.
If a teacher was

The teacher would
attend the class
AND GET NO
PER DIEM

             
             $
Each teacher would have
a card which stated
how many kilometers
their house is from the
training center.
AFTER the day's class,
the teacher could go to
the Teacher Gas Pump
AFTER the day's class,
the teacher could go to
the Teacher Gas Pump

and be given a
small amount of
gas equivalent to
the gas used to
come/go from
their home
(excluding the first 2km, so those living
within 2km would not receive gas)
IN ORDER TO PASS,
TEACHERS MUST DO
TWO THINGS
#1:

ATTEND ALL CLASSES
IN THE SERIES.
#2:

HAVE A TEACHER
TRAINER EVALUATE
THEIR IMPLEMENTATION
OF THEIR LEARNING IN
THE CLASSROOM.
IF A TEACHER PASSED
THE CLASS, THEY GET
THREE BENEFITS
#1:

THEY GET A CERTIFICATE.
In Cambodia, certificates
are important.
#2:

THEY GET PAID.

This could be the same amount as the per
diem, thereby just deferring our payment to
reflect the impact. Or the equivalent of lost
income from days in training.

Payment might increase slightly based on
class level.
#3:

THEY GET POINTS.
Each "motivated teacher" would earn a special
card after taking their first class.  Each class
would be worth a number of points (eg. level 1
classes = 1 point, level 2 classes = 2 points, etc).

Once a teacher has received 10 points, they
move up a level.
Higher Level Cards =
Higher Level Benefits.

Cambodian Teacher Training Model

  • 1. BREAKING THE PATTERN Teacher Training Supporting Motivated Teachers And Promoting Impact
  • 3. THE PROBLEM Almost every NGO and Teacher Training Program in Cambodia is…
  • 4. PAYING $$$ people to attend trainings
  • 6. RIGHT We are PAYING NOW: $
  • 7. RIGHT We are PAYING NOW: $ zzz Even if they don’t pay $ ATTENTION
  • 8. RIGHT We are PAYING NOW: $ z zzz SCHOOL Or USE the Even if they training don’t pay $ ATTENTION
  • 9. And if they don’t use the training, we STILL pay them and give more training!
  • 12. Current Pattern: (Don’t) BENEFIT LEARN
  • 13. Current Pattern: (Don’t) (Don’t) BENEFIT LEARN DO
  • 14. We need to CHANGE this pattern.
  • 15. A model based on IMPACT:
  • 16. A model based on IMPACT: LEARN
  • 17. A model based on IMPACT: LEARN DO
  • 18. A model based on IMPACT: LEARN DO BENEFIT
  • 19. What might this model look like?

  • 29. If a teacher was accepted into a course
  • 30. If a teacher was We would accepted into provide a a course substitute teacher   for the class
  • 31. If a teacher was We would accepted into provide a a course substitute teacher   for the class These would come from our Child to Child Educators and community members, trained by our Teacher Trainers

  • 36. AFTER the day's class, the teacher could go to the Teacher Gas Pump and be given a small amount of gas equivalent to the gas used to come/go from their home (excluding the first 2km, so those living within 2km would not receive gas)
  • 37. IN ORDER TO PASS, TEACHERS MUST DO TWO THINGS
  • 38. #1:   ATTEND ALL CLASSES IN THE SERIES.

  • 40. IF A TEACHER PASSED THE CLASS, THEY GET THREE BENEFITS
  • 41. #1:   THEY GET A CERTIFICATE. In Cambodia, certificates are important.
  • 42. #2:   THEY GET PAID. This could be the same amount as the per diem, thereby just deferring our payment to reflect the impact. Or the equivalent of lost income from days in training. Payment might increase slightly based on class level.
  • 43. #3:   THEY GET POINTS. Each "motivated teacher" would earn a special card after taking their first class.  Each class would be worth a number of points (eg. level 1 classes = 1 point, level 2 classes = 2 points, etc).  Once a teacher has received 10 points, they move up a level.
