Dana Gardner: Hello, and welcome to the next edition of the HP Discover Podcast Series. I’m
Dana Gardner, Principal Analyst at Interarbor Solutions, your host and
moderator for this ongoing sponsored discussion on IT innovation and how it’s
making an impact on people’s lives.

Gardner

Once again, we’re focusing on how companies are adapting to the new style of
IT to improve IT performance and deliver better user experiences, and
business results. This time, we’re coming to you directly from the HP
Discover 2013 Conference in Barcelona.

We’re here the week of December 9 to learn directly from IT and business leaders alike how big
data, mobile, and cloud, along with converged infrastructure are all supporting their goals in new
and interesting ways.
Our next innovation case study interview highlights how Siemens Brazil is using HP Anywhere
to improve how it can deliver applications to users with mobile devices. Here to tell us how
they’re doing it, is Alexandre Padeti, IT Consultant and Applications Integration Technician with
Siemens Brazil in São Paulo. Welcome.
Alexandre Padeti: Hi, Dana.
Gardner: Glad you could be here. Alexandre, tell us a little bit about what Siemens Brazil does
and the extent and size of your company, but I am specifically interested in your transition to
mobile applications.
Padeti: Siemens Brazil is an engineering company in Brazil, mainly responsible for 50 percent
of the energy transmission in Brazil. With the mobility scenario within Siemens Brazil, we’re
just starting right now by implementing HP Anywhere field applications.
Gardner: Why didn’t you just make these applications, customize them, host them, and deliver
them? What was missing from you to be able to do this yourselves?
Padeti: In the beginning, we were looking for a tool that gave us the freedom to develop for any
device. That's the main reason that we chose HP Anywhere. We have the freedom to choose or
give the freedom to the users to choose their device.
Gardner: And what types of applications have you targeted first for moving out to the mobile
tier?
Padeti: The main application that we are working with at the moment is Workflow Approval,
which integrates with our SAP system, which is our main backend system, and HP Anywhere.
We’re trying to give the managers mobility, the option to make their approval on daily basis in a
different way.

Real-time basis

Gardner: It's more important to have workflow approved and managed on a real-time basis,
wherever these individuals are and whatever device they happen to be using.
Padeti: Yes. These are the main points of the solution. We’re trying to give this especially to our
managers, who are used to being in meetings or moving from one place to
another, the ability to make this kind of approval on the go.
Gardner: Tell us a little bit about the process, you've had a proof of concept
(POC) phase. Why HP Anywhere? I suppose there are a number of ways to go
about this.

Padeti

Padeti: Initially we had a POC with HP Anywhere together with HP Brazil and
a local partner. From the beginning, it was well suited. So we decided to go
with HP Anywhere and now, we’re running a project that will cover nearly 200
users by the end of January.

Gardner: Do you think this will lead to more applications and more users? Does this seem to be
a large undertaking, the movement towards more mobility?
Padeti: Yes, that's for sure. We will be bigger in Siemens Brazil, because it's change of the
mindset of the users. They will start to change the way they’re thinking about requesting
solutions for the IT department, where I work. In the future, I believe that we’ll have a lot of
requirements to develop such kind of applications.
Gardner: Alexandre, do you have a sense yet what will be the majority of these mobile devices?
What are the platforms from the end-user endpoints that seem most popular? Which devices will
these apps be used by? Do you know which are most popular among these 200 people?
Padeti: The standard for Siemens Brazil is based on Android. So we’re quite sure that 90 percent
of the devices will be running on Android and a small percentage on iOS.
Gardner: As you've gone through this process, are there any lessons learned that you could
share for other organizations that most likely will have to go in a mobile direction if not sooner,
probably not much later. What lessons have you learned, or what advice could you offer them?

Small processes

Padeti: The first one would be to think about small processes. At Siemens Brazil, we’re
starting with a not-so-big process. We’re using a not-so-complex one to start. This is a good thing
to engage the users and give them the conformability, and furnish proof on the
solution.
The next one would be to talk a lot with users, because in our case we have
requirements that the user could not think of before, knowing that this is
possible with mobility.
I really advise you to talk with the users and know what they have, because most of
the times they don’t come up with an idea, because they’re only thinking of desktops or
notebooks. So, when you give to them the freedom with the mobility, new ideas will come up.
Gardner: Well, very good. I’m afraid we will have to leave it there. We've been talking about
how Siemens Brazil has been moving to more mobile applications delivery for its workers, in
this case workflow applications to managers, and we've been learning about this from Alexandre
Padeti, IT Consultant and Applications Integration Technician at Siemens Brazil in São Paulo.
Thank you so much.
Padeti: Thank you, Dana.
Gardner: And I like to thank our audience as well for joining us for the special new style of IT
discussion coming to you directly from the HP Discover 2013 Conference in Barcelona. I’m
Dana Gardner; Principal Analyst at Interarbor Solutions, your host for this ongoing series of HP
sponsored discussions.  Thanks again for listening and come back next time.
