THE BLUE BRAIN
TECHNOLOGY
By Dalia Mohammad
INTRODUCTION
 Human brain is the most valuable creation and The
human is called intelligent because of the brain.
 The brain translates the information delivered by the
impulses, which then enables the person to react.
 But we loss the knowledge of a brain when the body is
destroyed after the death of person
•Is there any solution for this?
What is BLUE BRAIN
 Blue Brain-The world’s first virtual brain.
• The IBM now developing a machine that can
function as human brain.
• Today scientist are in research to create an artificial
brain that can think, response, take decision, and
keep anything in memory.
 So, even after the death of a person we will not
loose the knowledge, intelligence, personalities,
feelings and memories of that person that can be
used for the development of the human society.
 No one has ever understood the complexity of
human brain. It is complex that any circuitry in the
world. So, question may arise “Is it really possible
to create human brain?”
The answer is “Yes”.
Cont.
 It is possible by using a supercomputer, with a huge
amount of storage capacity, processing power and an
interface between the human brain and this artificial
one.
 Through this interface the data stored in the natural
brain can be up loaded in to the computer. So the brain
and the knowledge, intelligence of any one can be kept
and used for ever.
WHY Do WE NEED
VIRTUAL BRAIN?
 To upload the contents of the natural brain into it .
 To keep the intelligence , knowledge and skill of any
person for ever .
 To remember things without any effort .
FUNCTIONING OF
BRAIN
 Sensory Input :-
Receiving input such as sound,
image, feeling… etc through
sensory cell.
 Interpretation:-
Interpretation of the received input by the brain by
defining states of neurons in the brain.
 Motor Output:-
Receiving of electric responses from the brain to
perform any action .
BRAIN SIMULATION
BRAIN SIMULATION
Natural Brain
Input
• By neurons
• By sensory cells
Interpretation
Memory
Virtual Brain
Input
• Through the silicon chip.
• Artificial neurons
Interpretation
Memory
 Now there is no question how the virtual brain
will work.
 But the question is how the human brain will be
up loaded into it.
 This is also possible due to the fast growing
technology.
UPLOADING HUMAN BRAIN
 The uploading is possible by the use of small robots
known as the NANOBOTS.
 These robots are small enough to travel through out our
circulatory system.
 Traveling into the spine and brain, they will be able to
monitor the activity and structure of our central nervous
system.
 They will be able to provide an interface with computer
while we still reside in our biological form .
 Nanobots could also carefully scan the structure of our brain,
providing a complete readout of the connection.
 This information, when entered into a computer, could then
continue to function like us.
 Thus the data stored in the entire brain will be uploaded into
the computer.
The research involves studying slices of living brain tissue using
patch clamp electrodes. Data is collected about all the many
different neuron types.
Research Work
 The project was founded in May 2005 by Henry
Markram at the EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland
 IBM developing the “Blue Brain”
 IBM, in partnership with scientist at Switzerland’s
École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne
(EPFL) Brain and Mind Institute will begin
simulating the brain’s biological systems.
The EPFL Blue Gene was the 8th fastest
supercomputer in the world
The "Blue Brain" supercomputer in Lausanne,
Switzerland.
HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE
REQUIRMENT
 A Super computer.
 8.096 CPUs at 700 MHZ (downloaded to handle massive
parallel processing)
 256 MB to 512 MB memory per processor.
 A very wide network.
 Linux and C++ software .
 A program to convert the electric impulses
from the brain to input signal, which is to be
received by the computer and vice versa.
 very powerful Nanobots to act as the interface
between the natural brain and the computer.
 Blue brain is an approach to store and utilize human
intelligence and information present in the mind even
after human demise.
 It is an important move towards self-decision making
by the computer or machine that holds a blue brain.
It can be used as an interface between human and
animal minds.
• It a good remedy towards human disability like a deaf
can get the information via direct nerve simulation.
PROS…
CONS…
 We become dependent upon the computer systems .
 Others may use technical knowledge against us.
 Another fear is found with respect to human cloning.
 If in future surrogates to humans are developed then,
there will be no human interaction and the world will
run on computers only
CONCLUSION
 We will be able to transfer ourselves into computers at
some point & this is just the beginning…..!
 It will bring both benefits and harm to human society .
 Very soon this technology will be highly accepted whole
over the world.
