This is an area of strength for me as I have been
fortunate to participate in a number of strategic
planning models that utilized different
approaches. The journey of taking a community
through the process of identifying aspirations,
needs and goals is exciting and I have learned
that helping to shape an inspired future state, or
vision, is central to this effort. With the focus on
21st
Century skills, the adoption of Common Core
State Standards and the proliferation of exciting
technology tools, there is a great deal of energy
and enthusiasm regarding the implementation of
a technology rich educational program.
Effective strategic plans call for clearly stated
goals and metrics and I have spent the last
three years honing my skills in this area.
I can continue to expand my knowledge around
advocating at the state and local level and
believe my membership with TICAL will help with
this effort.
3. Digital Age Learning Culture
Digital Age
•Educational Administrators create, promote,
and sustain a dynamic, digital-age learning
culture that provides a rigorous, relevant, and
engaging education for all students.

This is a strength area for me not only related to
my interests and recently enhanced knowledge,
but my position as Associate Superintendent of
Educational Services as well. My position calls
for me to provide direction for a host of meetings
with site and district leaders and well as the
school board. We regularly include technology
into meetings, sharing promising practices and
demonstrating new tools while striving to
cultivate a mindset that supports innovation and
reasonable risk-taking. We are currently working
on our five-year technology plan and will be
using the Horizon Report to inform our decisions
related to technology trends in proceeding
years.
An area of growth could include greater
promotion and participation in local, national,
and global learning communities regarding
digital age collaboration
4. Excellence in Professional Practice
Professional Practice
•Educational Administrators promote an environment
of professional learning and innovation that
empowers educators to enhance student learning
through the infusion of contemporary technologies
and digital resources.

Fortunately, this is another area of strength and
influence for me. Over the past three years, I have
worked with our team to build a robust
professionallearning infrastructure in partnership
with the association and support of the board. We
promote and utilize a number of communication
tools system-wide including Infinite Campus,
Cruncher, Google Docs, email and Druva (a secure,
district drop-box.)
New tools are modeled at management meetings
and teachers are provided support through ongoing
professional learning and a team of Teachers on
Assignment who provide on-site support and
professional development opportunities for staff. We
have allocated a substantial part of our annual
budget to this effort which includes release time for
teachers to collaborate. Our use of the Horizon
Report will help guide the development of our
technology plan as it reflects research related to
technology trends over the next five years. Staying
abreast of trends should be an area of growth for all
of us in leadership roles and will certainly be the
case for me moving forward.
5. Systemic Improvement
Systemic Improvement
•Educational Administrators provide digital age
leadership and management to continuously
improve the organization through the effective
use of information and technology resources.

The strength component to this piece for me
centers on my work around strategic planning
and the establishment of measurable goals and
clearly defined metrics. Over the years I have
learned that in order to keep a plan moving
forward, you must keep it in the forefront over
everyone’s thinking and planning. I work closely
with site leaders as they established their yearly
school goals, individual professional goals and
individual staff goals related to the
implementation of technology as a learning tool.
I ask that administrators provide work samples
to illustrate growth related to their goals.
An area of growth, as noted above, would
include the work around establishing and
leveraging strategic partnerships with outside
agencies. We have started some work in this
area and are excited about the opportunities.
6. Digital Citizenship
Citizenship
•Educational Administrators model and facilitate
understanding of social, ethical and legal issues
and responsibilities related to an evolving digital
culture.

I fully realize the importance of this category and
we have systems and protocols in place to
address the standards. With the well being of
students at stake, it is key that we know the
regulations and laws related to digital
citizenship. We model and provide ongoing
training for staff and students. We could use
more training for parents.
As I went through this module, I did realize the
myriad technicalities and depth of information
and am motivated to increase my knowledge.
There a legal elements to this piece that can
have far reaching implications and I want to
ensure I am well informed so I can anticipate
challenges and respond appropriately when and
if they present themselves.
The cultural piece here is of particular interest
as students are very much connected globally
and the ability to interface with other cultures is
key full participation in a global economy.
7. How Have I Changed as a Leader?
This course has changed my understanding of the use of technology by broadening my scope
regarding what is possible. I was exposed to a number of tools that I had simply never heard of and
using them was fun and at times frustrating. I was reminded what it feels like to be a student, feeling
challenged at times and yes, inadequate and wanting to throw in the towel. I was reminded that deep
learning can take place when a certain amount of healthy stress takes places that pushes one to go
beyond one’s comfort zone and keep pushing through to new learning.
The course drew my attention to a number of resources that I will be sharing with my team. These
resources will help guide us as we make decisions regarding the use of technology as a learning tool.
I was reminded, throughout the course, of the importance of fostering an open mindset related to
innovation and technology implementation while also setting a strategic path that includes clearly
written and articulated goals with accompanying metrics. The Horizon Report will be particularly
useful as we update our technology plan.
Finally, this course reminded me of the importance of risk taking as a leader, that we live in an ever
changing world and must be well informed and bold when moving our organizations forward. We live
in a rapidly changing world and as leaders, when there is volatility, we must have vision; when there is
uncertainty, we must have understanding; when there is complexity, we must have clarity and when
there is ambiguity, agility.
8. Action Plan
Our recently adopted strategic plan will help to promote our efforts around the use of technology as a
transformational learning and communication tool. My action plan will center on the implementation
of the focused goals we have established for this school year. Areas of focus will include the
following.
•Focused professional learning opportunities for all staff regarding the use of identified technology
tools and instructional models, e.g., flipped learning, etc.
•Support of site staff through the use of our Technology Teachers on Assignment at all sites.
•Sharing promising practices at all management meetings and scheduled board meetings.
•Sharing our progress related to established goals and metrics outlined in the strategic plan.
•Requiring site administrators to set at least one professional goal related to the use of technology in
their role as a leader.
•Setting my own goals around the use of technology related to my position, utilizing at least three new
tools during the course of the year and modeling at management meetings.
•Supporting site staff with the use of Infinite Campus as our main communication tool with students
and parents.
•Supporting the implementation of Smarter Balanced formative, interim and summative assessments
tools.
•Updating our technology plan, using the Horizon Report as our guide.
•Continuing to promote a culture of innovation and change including the partnering with local
business.
9. My Ongoing Learning
This is the fun part of the effort and includes an ongoing partnership and involvement with TICAL,
ISTE, local universities and business. I will continue to push my own thinking by attending
conferences, reading widely and simply playing around with new tools, trying them out and taking
risks by using them during management meetings and presenting at school sites and possibly,
conferences. The mindset I wish to continue cultivating in myself and others, is one of openness to
possibilities, experimentation, innovation and reasonable risk taking.
I cannot provide adequate leadership in this area unless I am well informed of trends, successful
practices and tools and demonstrate a level of competence and willingness to learn and try to
approaches. I am very excited about the seemingly limitless opportunities that are ahead that will
help transform the lives of our students and the adults who work with them.
