While breast cancer is one of the most common forms of
cancer in women, men have a different problem. That
problem is Prostate cancer. Since cancer is common in
men you should ensure you are getting tested regularly as
prescribed by your doctor. You should not fear these tests
because even if you have symptoms there is a good
chance these symptoms are due to something else. Also if
prostate cancer is caught early, it is normally easier to
deal with.
2. You should go with your doctor's recommendation but it is
recommended that males reaching the age of fifty should
have a 'PSA' (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test on an annual
basis. Remember that the PSA test can indicate one of
many prostate issues so a high number or an increase
does not mean you have cancer. It just means that
additional testing should be use to ensure there is not any
cancer in the prostate. When you get further testing, you
could discover that you have Prostatitis (inflammation of
the prostate) or Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH),
which is an enlargement of the prostate. The good news is
that both of these conditions can be treated with medicine.
However a high PSA test (normally above 4) could also
indicate cancer.
A test a doctor may use is called a Trans Rectal
Ultrasound. This test uses a camera that is inserted into
the body and the doctor can actually view the prostate.
This camera set up also has a spring loaded rod that can
get a portion of the tissue from the prostate which can be
analyzed in the lab for signs of cancer. Results will usually
be returned in about ten days of taking the test. If you do
have cancer you will likely talk to both a urologist and an
radiologist to discuss further treatments.
3. At this point, specialists become involved, usually a
Radiologist and a Urologist. Do not assume that either one
will lay out all possible treatment options available to you
for your situation.
You should always take the advice from your doctor but
here are some general recommendations:
1. Get a yearly PSA test after the age of 50.
2. If you have a family history of prostate cancer, you
should start getting this test at the age of 40.
3. Even if you have to pay for this test, it is a worthy
investment in your health.
4. If you are not happy with the results you can get a
second and third opinion.
5. Get complete information before making a decision.
What treatments are available? What side effects are
possible? What results can be expected?
6. Ask any many questions as you have.
7. Do not keep your diagnosis to yourself. You will need
the support of others so you will want to tell your family
and close friends. You may also want to look into support
groups because they can be very helpful.
4. Prostate Cancer can be very devastating but the good
news is that if it is caught early it is easier to heal. So
make sure you get tested on a regular basis so that you
can start getting treatment right away if you need it.
