! The route
On the 23th of December the converted Queen Christina of Sweden was
officially welcomed by the pope in Rome. Three days afterwards an impressive
procession accompanied her from the Vatican Palace towards Palazzo
Farnese, where she would take her more permanent residence. People
gathered in the streets and an infinit number of lights illuminated the route.
Upon arrival on Piazza Farnese, four bonfires around the fountains lit up the
scene and torches attached to the palazzo illuminated the temporary façade
that had been built in honour of the guest.

11. Celebrations for the 1637
Election of Ferdinand III
as King of the Romans
Sarah Lampe, Leiden University
Fireworks on Piazza di Spagna
This etching shows a moment of the magnificent fireworks held on Piazza di Spagna in
Rome in February 1637. The Spanish ambassador to the Vatican in Rome, Manual de
Moura, organized an eight-day long festival to celebrate the election of Ferdinand III as
King of the Romans. The highlight of the festival were the great fireworks. What you see
on the left is a square-shaped tower bursting into fireworks and revealing a round-
shaped tower. Subsequently, this tower likewise burst into flames revealing an
equestrian statue of Ferdinand III. With the help of some ‘occulte machine’ (secret
machinery) the statue was then brought from the square into the palace of the
ambassador.
The image is part of a series of etchings illustrating the fireworks on Piazza di Spagna published in a Festival Book shortly
after the event. You can see the series below. Read from left to right, the sequence of events appears almost like a film.

Festival Book
In the early modern period, festival books were frequently published to record events like
elections, weddings, and births. To the right, you see the first page of the festival book about
the events on Piazza di Spagna. On several pages, the author describes the course of the
events and does the honor to the newly elected king Ferdinand and also to Spain. Books like
this one were a good means to promote the influence and authority of the host of such
celebrations.
The election of Ferdinand was also celebrated at other sites in Rome. It was an appreciated
occasion for persons of the political life in the city, such as the Spanish ambassador, to
demonstrate status and power in the fragile net of political relationships in the town at the
time.
