Paul and Silas were imprisoned for telling a slave girl who was possessed by an evil spirit that she was free in the name of Jesus, but that night they sang hymns of praise to God in their jail cell which caused an earthquake that shook open all the prison doors; the jailer was about to kill himself for fear of being executed since the prisoners had escaped, but Paul called out to him not to harm himself as all the prisoners were still there.
