Test: Culture tips and expressions
To understand intercultural communication, you need to look at identity, etiquette and taboos. Our exercise
looks at the language you need to communicate across cultures and offers advice on intercultural
communication, too.
Choose the correct word from the list: identity, mutual, stereotyping, etiquette, immersion, slang,
context, homogenous, sensitive, taboo
1. Although we expect our managers to use their knowledge of the national characteristics of countries
in which we work, we also train them to avoid ???.
2. Many Asian cultures are often described as high ??? societies. This kind of culture tends to favour
groups over individuals and to place emphasis on the relationships within these groups.
3. Intercultural awareness implies showing ??? respect to people from other cultures.
4. In dealing with people from another culture we must be careful about the language we use. For this
reason, it is important to avoid too much ??? when talking to people who do not speak your
language.
5. Cultural misunderstandings can arise when people regard some national cultures as being ???. We
should avoid over-generalizing about national cultures to avoid the belief that every member of that
culture thinks and behaves in the same way.
6. We need first to look at ourselves and to be aware of our own cultural ???. This can help us to
understand and to interact with others.
7. To avoid causing offence, you should always try to avoid discussing subjects which may be
considered ??? in another culture.
8. You should try to be ??? to the other culture and be aware that customs and habits may be different.
9. A good way to learn about a different culture is total ???. This direct, first- hand contact may be
efficient but it is, of course, not always possible.
10. How to behave at meals, for example, can also be considered important. Many cultures, however, do
not mind if international visitors do not behave according to local ???.
