Virtualize everything.It got me thinking: Why? Why would this person want to virtualize everything? What did he see that I—that we at Riverbed—did not? It didn’t take long to figure out what he was talking about.
But maybe the most telling finding was what they discovered about the network itself: in two years, 50% of network schemes will start to suffer from degraded application performance, causing high levels of user dissatisfaction. Why is this?Because the 80/20 rule is about to be flipped on its head. [elucidate]
In a recent Forester survey of 207 IT leaders, over half of those surveyed indicated that 50% or more of their data stored in branch offices. <CLICK>The same survey reflects that only 13% of organizations indicate they are fully consolidated in the data center – and only 8% in the branch.This illustrates the opportunity for Granite – to help organizations bring this data into the data center where it can be controlled and protected.
Organizations worldwide have set out on a mission to consolidate their IT infrastructure - both within the data center itself, but also from branch and remote locations. There are some primary goals and outcomes that these organizations are looking for when consolidating to the data center. This includes:Lowering IT costs – both from an equipment and a manpower perspectiveTo reduce risk by ensuring that valuable corporate data instead of living in isolated locations around the globe is centralized, secure and protectedAnd ultimately this is all about gaining better control over valuable corporate data – and better control of the business.Riverbed has been in the center of this trend. With Steelhead we have helped customers ensure performance of applications and cut bandwidth usage once applications have consolidated from the branch to the data center or cloud.
Why servers, storage and backup remain typically comes down to performance and the need to ensure that if the WAN link goes down user productivity is not impacted.Also - many of our customers and prospects have applications within the branch that simply don’t work well across the WAN. These are things that defy WAN optimization – including Write-intensive applications that generate a lot of data and large files – things like Access databases or CAD applications – or PST file management – and also custom applications that use unique protocols. And in other cases it is simply a political decision – “server huggers” who do not want their local server taken to another location.
Despite significant consolidation with optimization by technologies like Steelhead Wan op, a lot of IT infrastructure is left behind in the branch and remote offices.
Lots of overhead at the branch. Granite provides relief. Don’t stop at the server or even the storage. Our approach is not replacement – it is improvement (BETTER) and touches all these areas.

I’m very happy to introduce to you a new architectural approach that does for edge servers - outside of the data center - what virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) did for desktops: and that is to allow IT to consolidate and manage all edge servers in the data center. This new approach - edge virtual server infrastructure (Edge-VSI) is delivered by our new product Riverbed Granite. Granite solves the problem at the block level – and does what was previously thought impossible: it allows storage to be decoupled from its server over thousands of miles of distance—and actually work as if the storage were local to the server. A user in Paris, for example, can access a virtual server in Paris, which in turn accesses data over 4000 miles away in Chicago and the experience is as if it is all local. Granite effectively projects data center storage from the data center to the branch enable global enterprises to achieve complete consolidation of edge applications, servers and storage to the data center.User gets uncompromised performance– and IT is able to manage it all within the four walls of the data center.

And here’s a closer look at the magic of what Granite is really doing. One of the challenges of storage protocols at the block level working across the WAN is that block-level access tends to be very random – which at the local level with no latency is OK – but as soon as you introduce a bit of latency – as in – across the WAN – it breaks down. Applications have no tolerance for delays in response from block-based storage.But we’ve cracked the code at Riverbed with Granite because we have engineered a way to provide file system-aware block-based acceleration. By this awareness we can then from a read perspective predict block usage and understand the range of random blocks that required when opening a file. And at the local level – meaning at the branch we Granite has an authoritative read cache which ensures that data is present and delivered at LAN speed. And on the write-side – Granite accelerates block writes – once again providing fast local write access with writeback to the data center – and because the local Granite device is authoritative – it alone owns the data – the data that is streamed back to the data center and consistency issues are eliminated.
As mentioned, Granite Edge caches data for use at the edge and there are two modes available for this functionality. One is to cache the working set of data. The working set is defined as the active data blocks that have been requested at the edge. Our customers estimate that 80% of the time they are accessing 20% of their data. Granite is able to maintain the most frequently used blocks locally. Any block “misses” meaning requests for blocks that aren’t already at the edge are quickly retrieved from the data center. With the right sizing, its expected that encountering block misses over time will be very few.The other available options is to Pin a LUN to the branch. When you pin the LUN, you can prepopulate the edge with 100% of the data so it is always local for every end user and application at the edge – yet is safely secure – including any changes in the data center. This is the mode that best supports the concept of disconnected operations – in other words, enabling work when the WAN is down – because it ensures all data is available to support the branch.
A single (or HA paired) Granite Core in the DC can server many branches from the centralized storage array.
Works the same whether you are using Granite or not
The benefits of Granite are highlighted here. This includes:Control – where data is secured centrally. This is one of the primary goals of IT organizations and Granite helps ensure that IT gets control without breaking the user experience in the branch. In the branch itself, the data projected from the data center is encrypted, eliminating concerns about security of data at the edge.Management is much easier – why – because its all now part of the main data center best practices. Storage for edge locations can be easily and more accurately provisioned. Over time if edge storage requirements grow, additional storage can be provisioned simply from the central location. Its no longer necessary to have an IT person visit a remote location. Backup is also now possible from the data center – and because data is continually and consistently streamed from the branch to the data center – customers improve their recovery point objectives – and in the reverse, recovery times are improved because it is not necessary to perform time consuming restores. Granite easily streams required data to the branch which improves recovery times.And from a cost standpoint, Granite can help reduce or eliminate hardware and software – and eliminate the need to backup in the branch. Customers gain better use of the tools and equipment that they’ve invested in to support consolidation at the data center – all to support now the broader business. And there is also a real impact in terms of reducing IT personnel requirements – all of which is savings to business.
