This is class 9 of the series The Consummation.
This class looks at Preterism, Partial Preterism and Full Preterism.
This is being taught at Christ Presbyterian Church in Marietta.
4. The Great Revolt began in the year 66 AD.
Caused by religious tensions.
Escalated due to anti-taxation protests and
attacks upon Roman citizens.
The Romans responded by plundering the Jewish
Temple and executing up to 6,000 Jews in
Jerusalem.
This prompted a full-scale rebellion.
5. GeneralVespasian was given the task by
Emperor Nero of crushing the rebellion in
Judaea.
Vespasian was joined by his sonTitus.
Vespasian began operations by subjugating
Galilee.
By the year 68, Jewish resistance in the north had
been crushed.
Methodically proceeded to cleanse the coastline.
6. The leaders of the collapsed Northern revolt
escaped to Jerusalem.
Infighting and civil war among the Jewish rebels.
A faction of the Zealots was invited to rule
Jerusalem by the Sadducees.
Rome 68 AD:
Nero declared enemy of the empire. Committed
suicide.
Vespasian returned to Rome. Later became
emperor.
7. Titus is in command to crush the Jewish
Rebellion.
Titus’ advance on Jerusalem created a wave of
refugees in Jerusalem.
Josephus estimates over 1 million in Jerusalem.
Infighting inside Jerusalem. Zealots burn dry food
supplies to force the fight.
7 month siege.
Jerusalem breached in the summer of 70 AD.
8. Jerusalem sacked and burned
Temple destroyed.
97,000 Jews were captured and enslaved.
Josephus claims that 1,100,000 people were killed
during the siege.
Christians fled Jerusalem before the siege and
thus have no significant casualties.
9. Preterism is a view in Christian eschatology
which holds that some or all of the biblical
prophecies concerning the Last Days refer to
events which took place in the first century after
Christ's birth, especially associated with the
destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. The term
preterism comes from the Latin praeter,
meaning past, since this view deems certain
biblical prophecies as past, or already fulfilled.

10. Two major forms of Preterism:
Partial Preterism
▪ Partial Preterism, the older of the two views, holds that
prophecies such as the destruction of Jerusalem, the
Antichrist, the GreatTribulation, and the advent of the
Day of the Lord as a "judgment-coming" of Christ were
fulfilled circa 70 AD. (Theopedia)
Full Preterism
▪ Full Preterism differs from Partial Preterism in that it
sees all prophecy fulfilled with the destruction of
Jerusalem, including the resurrection of the dead and
Jesus' Second Coming. (Theopedia)
11. Key verses for Preterists:
Matthew 10:23: you will not have gone through all
the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
Mark 13:30:Truly, I say to you, this generation will
not pass away until all these things take place.
Matthew 16:28:Truly, I say to you, there are some
standing here who will not taste death until they
see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.
12. Full Preterists:
70 AD is the Second Coming.
The final judgment.
The resurrection of the dead.
Is not aligned with the historic creeds and
confessions.
Is heretical.
13. Partial Preterist view of 70 AD.
The end of the Jewish age.
A visitation of Christ in judgment.
The great tribulation.
▪ Possibly other tribulations will come that echo this great
tribulation.
Last Days:
▪ “Last Days” in scripture refer to the period leading to 70 AD.
▪ “Last Day” refers to the Second Coming of Christ, which will
happen in the future.

18. Amillennialism
70 AD represents a type of tribulation that can be
repeated later.
Postmillennialism
70 AD is the great tribulation. This will not be
repeated.
Sometimes you will see theonomists associated
with this view.
19. Matthew 24:1-8 (ESV)
[1] Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to
point out to him the buildings of the temple. [2] But he answered them,
“You see all these, do you not?Truly, I say to you, there will not be left
here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”
[3]As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately,
saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of
your coming and of the end of the age?” [4] And Jesus answered them,
“See that no one leads you astray. [5] For many will come in my name,
saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. [6] And you will
hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this
must take place, but the end is not yet. [7] For nation will rise against
nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and
earthquakes in various places. [8] All these are but the beginning of the
birth pains.
saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of
your coming and of the end of the age?”
3 Questions:
1.When will these things be? (The destruction of theTemple)
2. What will be the sign of your coming?
3.The end of the age?
Preterests believe these
questions refer to the events of
70AD
Full Preterests believe
this is the second
coming
Partial Preterists believe
this is the coming of
Christ to judge the nation
of Israel.
20. Matthew 24:1-8 (ESV)
[1] Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to
point out to him the buildings of the temple. [2] But he answered them,
“You see all these, do you not?Truly, I say to you, there will not be left

[3]As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately,

“See that no one leads you astray. [5] For many will come in my name,
saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. [6] And you will

saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of
your coming and of the end of the age?”
3 Questions:
1.When will these things be? (The destruction of theTemple)
2. What will be the sign of your coming?
3.The end of the age?
Amillennialism views that (2) refers to the
Second Coming of Christ and (3) refers to
the close of the age at the SecondComing
The rest of the discourse has these 3
questions woven together in the answer,
sometimes distinct, sometimes merged.
