Enhancing Education Through
      Technology (EETT)
• Berkeley USD received $335,000 from this Title II
  Part D grant in 2007 to provide resources and
  training to Science Resource Teachers (SRTs) so
  that they can integrate more technology into the
  science classroom.
• Provides funding for two year implementation of
  the grant with a goal of increasing students’ use and
  skills with 21st century tools
Goals of EETT Grant in BUSD
• Increase student use of technology through
  authentic use and practice in the science classroom
• Students will participate in the following
  experiences:
  – Use word processing to document experiment results
    (i.e. Microsoft Word)
  – Entering data and calculating numbers with a
    spreadsheet and creating graphs (i.e. Microsoft Excel)
  – Searching web databases for information
  – Use handheld probes to gather information
  – Post responsibly to school science blog
Equipment Purchased by EETT
    (received by each elementary school in BUSD)

• Laptop Cart, including wireless router and
  printer for each school
• 10 Laptops for the cart plus one for the teacher’s
  use
• LCD projector
• Document Camera
• Vernier Probeware and probes; a handheld tool
  that allows students to take readings and
  conduct experiments using a handheld
  tool (examples include temperature probes and
  magnetism probes)
Positions Provided Through EETT to
          Support Teachers
• Technology Support – (.20) Claire Scott
   – Provides tech support to Science Release Teachers (SRTs) both one-
     on-one and in customized group workshops and trainings.
• Science and Technology Integration – (.20) Christina Green
   – Assist in planning and presenting trainings and workshops for SRTs
   – Create lessons integrating technology component with FOSS kits
     and creating binders for current and future staff
• EETT Support (.10 FTE) - Audrey Amos
   – conducting SRT observations twice a year,
   – Giving student surveys twice a year and collecting
   – preparing all that data for the grant.
Science @ BAM

• Every 4th and 5th grade class has 2 science classes
  twice a week to provide preparation time for
  classroom teachers

• BUSD adopted a new Science curriculum in 2006,
  FOSS (Full Option Science System) – FOSS
  curriculum includes textbooks and materials kits for
  experiments.

• Typical FOSS model for lessons is to conduct 2 hands-
  on experiments and read from the FOSS text (literacy
  component).
Science and Technology @ BAM
• During science classes and lessons BAM
  students participate in a variety of technology
  integration activities thanks to EETT:
  – Document science lessons on BAM blog
Science and Technology @ BAM
• Use computers to do
  – Research on Science topics
  – View educational videos on web sites such as
    Discovery.com,
  – Create PowerPoints as an authentic assessment tool on
    scientific topics

• Unit Review Video
  o Appeals to multiple intelligences
  o Increased participation
Sharing What We Learn
• In addition to learning how to use
  technology, students can share their
  experiences with the families and friends.
• Teaches responsible online communication
