Reports by the cultural sector in the UK
However whilst these and other studies/reports identify the digital skills and literacy gap, none of them go onto define neither what these digital skills or literacies are nor what the most effective and sustainable interventions to realise these could be.
IT and Digital Media departments running discrete training, on top of normal workload
Relying on digital heroes in Museum rather than embedded in a professional development program and delivered holistically
Digital heroes committed but not experienced in delivering professional training
Digital skills training often not specific to function or roles…and therefore not always useful
Seen as training for digital/tech people rather than museum staff as a whole
How to advocate that digital literacy for museums is a strategic objective if museums are going to achieve their digital aspirations? With the same staff, no increase or reduction in training budget and no time.
Introducing new ways of working through digital project delivery e.g. Agile, Slack, Trello etc…
Running informal(?) training initiatives - on the job training, brown bag sessions, computer clubs
Digital Strategy more embedded in wider strategic planning raising importance at a senior management level
Increase in digital outputs and digital roles and more cross-functional working forcing museums to become more digitally literate
