What Place Does Penance Play in a Christians Life? This study helps to answer this question. Is penance the same as repentance? Does penance have a place within our Christian experience?
2.  2 Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to
salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh
death.
Repentance Is Good
3.  What sort of sorrow do you have when you have been found
out/know that you have committed iniquity or, as we often say,
sinned?
 It’s a very important question because one type of sorrow leads to
salvation and the other type of sorrow leads to death.
Godly Sorrow Is Good
4.  Matthew 7:21-23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall
enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my
Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord,
Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast
out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And
then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye
that work iniquity.
Lead into Death
5.  Well yes they can and if they do does the Lord still know them?
This verse puts these two clauses together to confirm that the seal
and the sure foundation of God stands
 2 Timothy 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure,
having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let
every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.
Can the Saved Sin
6.  As the nervous system of our body kicks in in order to warn us if we stop
breathing or our heart has stopped beating so God has given to every man the
gift of conscience.
 John 1:9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into
the world.
 John 8:9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience,
went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus
was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
Our Conscience – Our Greatest
Gift
7.  As a born-again spirit filled believe that you have a conscience that is
quickened by the power of the Holy Spirit.
 Your heart will condemn you if you are really hungering after
righteousness.
 Hebrews 12:25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they
escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall
not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:
Heightened Conscience for Born-
Again
8.  Don’t be fooled by this false idea about a heart that condemns itself:
 If your heart condemns you, God who is greater than your heart and
knows all things, condemns you – that is sends his Holy Spirit to
convict you of your sin.
 1 John 3:20-21 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our
heart, and knoweth all things. 21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us
not, then have we confidence toward God.
You Are Not above Condemnation
9.  We need to declare ourselves approved in the matter of forgiveness of
sin.
 2 Corinthians 7:11 For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed
after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what
clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what
vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye
have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.
Sorrow after a Godly Sort
10.  We can rest in the hope that it is the goodness of God that leads us
to repentance in the first place:
 Romans 2:4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and
forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of
God leadeth thee to repentance?
The Goodness of God

us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Here is power -

us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Sorry?
 So you want to show you are sincere!
23.  We do not prove our sincerity by a prolonged spirit of “repentance
(penance) of dead works.”

 You prove how sorry you are by believing in his forgiveness &
knowing that you have it.

An important question to know the answer to. Does it matter? Could the actions of penance make it worse? Surely this is a question that each of us needs to have a satisfactory answer for.
If we work iniquity regardless of our confession of faith were travelling on the path that leads to death. It pays to be very clear about the testimony of the Scriptures concerning those that work iniquity. The perseverance of the saints does not mean that a born-again believer can commit iniquity with impunity under the understanding that there present and future sins are automatically expunged from the record and that no accounting will ever be called for.
The Sure Foundation Is Sealed. Is not it presumptuous to presume that all present and future sins that a born-again Christian commits are automatically washed in the blood and forgotten?
One ought to believe the scriptural record rather than the observations and findings of modern psychiatric disciplines. The Scriptures are very clear about gender and about the fact that everybody has a conscience. According to the word of God even the darkest psychopath actually has a conscience and deep down internally knows the difference between right and wrong. Whatever mankind may or may not observed, whatever they have deduced from those observations the testimony of the word of God stands true and is head and shoulders above all else. Yes people can be possessed of an evil spirit and not in their right mind but this is clearly manifested.
There is an entirely false and misleading idea promoted in the next verse. I am sure that you have heard taught that if your heart condemns you then God, who is greater than your heart, does not condemn you because he has sent his son, his only begotten son, the Lord Jesus Christ to save you and to deliver you. Please consider the implications of this.
These two sentences go together and are a comparison. If your heart condemns you you can be certain that God is condemning you and if your heart does not condemn you then you can be certain that God does not condemn you and that you have confidence towards God. This is the plain meaning of the English why do we, so often, seek to make the English of none effect?
We need the assurance of the spirit and the confirmation of the Scriptures that we are indeed justified and forgiven by God himself.
We might say that we believe in God’s future forgiveness for our sins but the truth is that we need to confess our sins if and at the time that we commit sin.
This is an explanation of justification – just as if I had never sinned – that is the power of the blood and the power of our conscience being washed clean from dead works to serve the living God. The cleansing is not simply automatic it becomes a reality through repentance and faith by the grace of God.
Forgiveness and salvation appear in a heartbeat. We know we are saved we do not preach or practice that we are being saved. Modern Bible versions confuse and defuse the simple truth. Check these references out for yourself. Only one of them is the actual word of God the rest are fables:
[KJV] 1 Corinthians 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
[NKJ] 1 Corinthians 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
1 Corinthians 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
[NIV] 1 Corinthians 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
[NLT] 1 Corinthians 1:18 The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.
[ESV] 1 Corinthians 1:18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
This is conditional: IF WE WALK IN THE LIGHT – if makes clear that it is possible not to walk in the light. If we do not walk in the light we do not have true fellowship one with another in the blood of Jesus Christ his son does not cleanse us from all sin.
The test me of the Scripture is quite clear in that we are not expected to walk in sin and we are expected to sin not.
You show God how sorry you are for the sin that you have just committed by coming to him and the throne of grace with repentance and faith.
