Pictures Long time ago cavemen used to write or usually draw on rocks, cave walls and on scraps of buffalo hide. These writings told us their battles, heroes and usually their daily life. They also said warnings and stories.
Smoke Smoke signals were another way to communicate. The Grasslands were flat back then so you can see a smoke signal from miles and miles away. They change the puffs of smoke from short to long. They could send a warning or sometimes it was simple messages like “Come on home, it’s time for supper.
Mirror People used mirrors to send signals in the daylight. People used it to tell rescue planes where they are. They could send a signal on horseback, and be miles away in no time.
Fire signalsFire signals were usually used at night. Fire signals were motion signals made if you would run in front of the fire or run around it. Indian scouts could read it easily. In the olden days people used fire signals to tell the tribes if there is danger, this way they could get ready for battle. People ran around it to say “Go away get lost”.
Blanket signals Blankets were used for warriors to communicate to people who could see them but could not hear them. When you would wave a blanket and told people there was danger. It gave some tribes more time to get ready the attack.
Sign Language: Not all the Plains people spoke the same language. To communicate with other tribes, they developed a sign language, a language of hand movements. Over time, the same signs were used all over the Plains area. Usually, each band had at least one sign talker. The "talkers" understood over 3000 different signs. Some of the "talkers" could sign faster than you could speak. When Europeans first started entering the Plains region, various tribes communicated with these early explorers using sign language.
