1. What did you learn this semester? The golden question from all friends and family members
when you come home for breaks. One would think that since my first language is English,
writing papers would be easy. It should be, but it is not. I have learned that my writing was not as
good as I thought it was. I have learned that throwing a paper together last minute does not work as
good in college as it did in high school. I realized early on in the semester that I have trouble
analyzing pieces of writing, I can give a summary all day, but analysis is not a strong suit of mine.
Sometimes teachers believe that we automatically know how to write, we are not born with reading
skills. It would be hard to believe if someone said that they learned nothing from English 111. From
English 111 I learned that summarizing is not the same as synthesizing. I also learned that I needed
to strengthen my critical reading, thinking, and composing skills. I also gained a better use and
understanding of rhetoric knowledge such as audience, purpose and evidence. In conclusion English
111 taught me to be more aware of my conventions in writing. I believe that I have gained knowledge
in critical thinking, rhetoric information, and conventions from this semester that have strengthened
my writing and I can provide examples to back the clause. Before this semester in college, I strolled
through first semester ignoring the analyzation part of most assignments and hoping the summary
did the job. When a

2. Over the past few months, I have learned several different writing techniques. While all of the
different types of papers were difficult to write, I believe that my writing skills have improved. In
fact, I did not understand all of the assignments, but I did try to do my best on all of them. While I
should have used more transitional words in between sentences and paragraphs, I feel that I learned
a great deal. It is true that I have not had very much writing experience and the writing process is
difficult for me. Sometimes, I do admit, it takes days to complete one assignment, but it will be
worth it when I am a proficient writer.
For example, the research paper was one of the most difficult assignments that I have ever written. I

I did not introduce the person effectively. For example, when quoting someone, one should write
something such: as Balko points out that, he is upset with insurance companies (Balko). This
example is in my own words and is an example of a paraphrase. I quoted people and then would not
write what I thought about the quote afterwards. When doing this in an essay, the teacher has no
way of knowing what the student is trying to convey. A proper quote should start with an
introduction. After the introduction, you have to say what the person has said, followed by what
you think about what they said. After doing this, a student should cite the author by using
parentheses. I did not know that a writer was supposed to do this. My first paper was very inadequate.
Additionally, I also cited sources and then forgot where I got the information. However, the use of
citing information and research was also one of my debilitating points. Nevertheless, I believe after
the reminders, corrections, and proofreading that needed pointing out to me, helped me improve in
this area.
Research in the library labs were very helpful and informative in spotting web sites that were
biased and did not have creditable information. Many people make web sites that are not credible
and it is always good to select scholarly sources when writing research papers for school. When one
researches a subject, you should always keep good records. I am a disorganized person, and lose

3. I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write
an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite
better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and
the "Common Sense" textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the
contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards.
Through the exploration of the "Subjects and Strategies" textbook, I have learned nine different
methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall
theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past...show more content...
This allowed me to write more extensively on the topic I had chosen which in turn helped expand
the size of my research paper. I received a B on my final draft; the first passing grade I have ever
received on a research paper. I am very satisfied with my grade. When it came to the essays
writing became a little trickier because I had to understand what it was I needed to write about
and the style in which I need to write it in. There are nine essay writing methods which I learned
while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal,
narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I
encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was
finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything
else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and
myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most
of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was
understood. My final drafts were very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them.
For my exemplification essay I chose to write about the reasons why condoms

4. Importance And Purpose Of Research Essay
Importance and purpose of research
Research is important to understand, increase knowledge, and get information for social life.
Social research is conducted to extend knowledge about some aspects of society like humanities,
business or any social science [asi]. Research is used to form or develop new theories in order to
understand the process behind particular event or behavior, or review the correctness of existing
theories. In addition, research is also conducted to inform decisions or action to solve everyday
issues such as evaluating the effectiveness of policy. [abr] and [brm] of the business research
emphasis on the importance of research as getting problem–solving information. Research is the
process of studying and analyzing the aspects of the issue as to explore the solution to the business.
The summaries of the core objectives of research are testing existing knowledge, developing new
system or generating new knowledge, seeking solution for issues, and analyzing new problems or
investigating existing problems [br].
Quantitative and Qualitative Paradigm
[br] a research paradigm is a philosophical perspective that guides how scientific research should be
conducted. Philosophy is 'a set or system of beliefs [stemming from] the study of the fundamental
nature of knowledge, reality, and existence' (Waite and Hawker, 2009, p.685).

5. Reflection Paper On Bioethics
In the first reading response, I learned about the history of bioethics and how it progressed over
time. Bioethics is a new but older field called medical ethics. They both have their differences; for
example, bioethics is more focused on critical and reflective enterprise. It is more revolved around
better understanding issues, nature of ethics, value of life, and the importance of a human life.
Bioethics watches out for public policy and controlling science. On the other hand, medical ethics
focuses more on doctor–patient relationship, and is more concerned about colleagues within their
profession. The reading also went over the Oath of Hippocrates and its importance. This basically
means that doctors will try their hardest to treat and benefit their patients and avoid harm. Over
time, many different religious groups had to deal with their own issues within medical ethics. New
rules like doctors must be sympathetic started to emerge, which is still used today. As time went
on, in the 1970s philosophers started to open up to questions that have never been said before. This
started to broaden bioethics, and it now involves a lot of things like laws, public policy, nursing,
medicine, and biomedical sciences. I learned from this reading how bioethics has changed over the
past. I also learned how bioethics is very much integrated in our everyday lives, from hospitals,
research labs, communities, and our history.
In the second reading response I learned about the four

6. Throughout this semester in the Introduction to Academic Research course, I learned a great deal
about research. We covered a wide variety of topics that encompassed topics such as methods of
field research, the unknowns when conducting research (the Black Box activity), the differences that
exist among fields when using the word "research", and many others.
I'll begin with what I learned about myself. Throughout this course, I learned a great deal about my
future interests and the characteristics I exhibit when participating in a group project. When working
with Rob Geis and Martin Castro, I searched constantly and relentlessly through the CIA database to
find any information relevant to our project and the argument we wished to make....show more

I believe my research interests lie within the American South. I am fascinated by the historic and
economic elements of the region that I call home. I personally believe that learning about your
interests is important but the strengths, values, and limitations that you bring to the table are
more important. Learning this about yourself helps to address your own weaknesses and to find
individuals that balance the research group out. Throughout this course, I also learned a bit about
research. My concept of research changed very little. Throughout high school and the IB
program, I learned how to evaluate sources, the importance of primary sources, and other
elements of research. In my senior year, I completed an original work entitled "How has the
internet changed the market structure of local news with reference to the Augusta Chronicle in
Augusta, Georgia?". The research paper was over 24 pages and nearly 4,000 words long. I
received an A (a grade received by 10.59% of all students involved in most difficult international
high school program in the world) for my Extended Essay grade from the IB Economics
examiners in India. I was also asked to complete research reports in other individual courses. One
of these reports included my IB History of the Americas class. In this report, I examined how
accurate the media portrayal of Jefferson Davis following the Civil War reflected his personality

7. What I Have Learned About Research
What I have learned about research is that it is a process, a scientific process that psychologist
and scientist develop that includes many different approaches and that is carefully peer reviewed
and evaluated. There is what is called the Scientific Approach where scientist have an idea or
theory and based on their observation will either support the theory or the theory can be falsified
by their peers. Data also goes through a review period before it is published in a scientific journal
by scientist who have the knowledge and expertise to evaluate it.
I also learned the difference between basic and applied research where basic research focuses mostly
on things such as emotion, cognition, social behavior, personality development, learning, and
neuropsychology. Basic research will be more helpful for answering fundamental questions about the
nature of behavior. Applied research however, addresses more of a specific problem with a possible
solution. Program evaluation covers a large area of applied research. Program evaluation assesses the
social reforms and innovations that occur in government, education, the criminal justice system,
industry, health care, and mental health institutions. When discussing behavioral research it is
imperative to note the precedents that it has in many fields and the significance of the applications
to public policy.

8. My Experience With Academic Writing
My experience with my academic writing it comes from the past years in different classes, that I
have taken here in Texas Tech University. I have taken some couple classes in the science
department, a law class. In my law class I had to write an academic paper, explain the different
types a law that will apply in a wind energy industry. This academicwriting was done in the law
class, but that was different from English class. The writing in the science class was little bit like
the writing that was done in English 1301 at South Plains. My experience in the class was to
compare and summaries article that was chosen by the professor. In this class, it helps me to
improve my writing skills little bit more that my high school English. One of my weaknesses in
writing is my grammar, that I will go in depth by going to the writing center and other helpful
resources. In 1302 I will learn more in depth how to write a research paper, so that I can go more
in depth on my work and can use all the different sources on an essay paper. Me intend to build my
strength to get better on my grammar is to make sure that I read aloud for my research or
argument paper that will be writing for this semester. My goal for this class is to finish with a
good grade and learn a lot from the professor. Also, to make sure that I use all help that I get from
the class that I will be attending during this semester.

9. What I Have Learned Essay
What I Have Learned
When I think about what counts as learning to me, I think about my life. Just being able to live in
this world to me is a learning experience, because I feel that my life is full of lessons and I believe
that it takes lessons to learn in life. I feel that I have learned to understand learning more and to
also understand the value of learning. As I get older I can comprehend subject matters more than I
could ever do before. I am learning to be more serious and I find myself not taking life for granted
anymore.
I also feel that maturing counts as learning for me because growing up I was continuously being
called immature. For me, maturing counts as learning because I find myself doing things I never

I feel that I have to get rid of bad habits in order to make room for better habits that I need for
everyday life. I am learning better habits everyday. Even though I did bad on my first exam I feel
that counted as learning for me because now I know what it takes for me to receive a high grade on
any test I take.
The biggest learning experience to me so far is life itself. I feel that way because there is so much to
learn in life. It takes growing up for me to learn in life. I am now beginning to understand the value
of learning because a year ago I did not appreciate learning. I did not value it like I value it now. I
took it for granted as if learning could just be given to me. I realize now that it has to be earned. My
attitude in high school was bad because I really did not feel I was learning, so I took it for granted.
In high school I felt as if the teachers were jokes and I also felt they did not care about educating
me properly. I am now starting to learn the value of an education. I now look forward to learning
new things everyday. I feel that I am beginning to have a passion for learning. I never thought that
I would feel this way about learning because I never did appreciate it like I do now. I now actually
yearn to learn; I feel that I need to learn new things. Every assignment I have done in college is
teaching me something new. I think I feel this way because I am maturing and I now view learning
differently than I did

I have proactively engaged in research activity throughout my undergraduate program. I had my first
research experience in Dr. B Anand's lab, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, during my
second year. The aim of the project was to study the non–fluorescent beta–barrel structured proteins
and engineer its amino acid sequence to make them into fluorescent ones. Our approach was mainly
based upon the studies of Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) from a jellyfish Aequorea victoria. Tools
like Python programming language, Gromacs, Ribosome, PROSS, and Pymol were used to study
the structural components of non–fluorescent proteins. I gained invaluable...show more content...
I was challenged with cloning ydeH gene into the pJT118 plasmids which are green light sensitive.
The ydeH gene produces a protein named diguanylate cyclase, which induces the production of

International Bio–molecular design competition (BIOMOD) 2012 held at Wyss Institute, Harvard
University, USA. Most of the molecular genetic techniques were extensively used in my project.
During this internship, apart from gaining deeper technical experience, I realized that I could work
on a research problem with a certain degree of independence, figuring out right approaches and
proposing useful experiments. I acquired more confidence in my aptitude for research and it has
been boosted while working on my undergraduate projects.
As a part of my undergraduate thesis, I worked on a project 'Extraction and analysis of beauvericin,
a mycotoxin produced by Beauveria bassiana and its cytotoxic effects on the SF–21 (immortalized
pupal ovarian cells isolated from Spodoptera frugiperda) cell line' under the guidance of Dr.
Gurvinder Kaur Saini, IIT Guwahati. Beauvericin metabolite was extracted from the Beauveria

beauvericin was analyzed and confirmed with High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and
Mass spectroscopy (MS). Cytotoxic

11. How I Learned And Developed My Writing Skills
This semester I was surprised by how much I actually learned and developed my writing skills. I
was given the opportunity to learn the many steps that it is required to become a good writer.
Writing requires a lot of work. It consists of various steps; prewriting, drafting, rewriting,
proofreading and publishing. . All of these components are extremely important, and necessary, and
will need to be follow to improve student's writing.
I feel my writing has improved due to the help of the writing process and all the writing
assignments I experienced. I was able utilized each of these components this semester. I wrote
various journals and two essays, which were very challenging to me. The first essay I was asked to
write, was a Narrative essay about an experience in which later I questioned my actions. At first, I
was very nervous due to I have never written an essay before. I did not even know where to begin.
I struggled during the whole process of writing an essay. My biggest problem of all was putting
my thoughts in order so I could make sense of what I wanted to say. I brainstorm for days trying
to figure out a topic. With the help of the eLearning text information on module 2, how to choose
a topic and developing a working thesis I started to write down some ideas. With the help of
Module 3, Introduction to Narrative Essay, and the examples that were provided, I was able to start
getting some ideas of what I wanted to write about. I finally came up with, Moving away

Learning Strategies
The new year begins and Learning Strategies is on your schedule. Truly, you are probably not
knowing what to expect and you think that this class is not for you. Boy, are you wrong. This class
will save you plenty of time, so you better listen closely. At the end, you will leave the class
wondering why no one ever showed me this. So listen up! The three most useful things that I learned
in this class are: my learning style, how to take notes when reading a textbook, and how to be a more
successful student at college.
If you know your learning style, college will be easier. "If you discover how you process information

However, if you learn how to use this technique efficiently, you will never have to reread a chapter.

sub–headings. Then, start with paragraph one. However, don't read with a high–lighter. At the end of
the paragraph, Stop, think about what was just read. Write a question in the margin and underline
the answer in text. Do this for the entire chapter. Like I said, it is very time consuming. Now when
you need to review, cover up the text and say question out loud. Try to answer it without looking at
the underline material. Review after reading the chapter, before classes, and

Reflection is thought by linking recent experience with early experience to promote more complex
and interrelated mental models or patterns. The thinking involves looking for commonalities,
differences, and interrelations beyond their superficial elements. The goal is to develop higher order
thinking skills.
Most educators believe that reflection is useful in the learning process, even without the supporting
research data. http://www.nwlink.com/~donclark/hrd/development/reflection.html For me, I do not

14. Reflection : What I Have Learned In The Class
Introduction
What I have learned in this class? It is my first question that I have asked myself. It is my first
experience to have a blended class just like FYS 001 at West Coast University. I have never taken
the blended course, so I have learned a few interested things with the blended class. First at all, I
have a chance to meet my professor and my classmates in person on the first day of the class. It is
an advantage to know whom I am talking to when I go to the class discussion board. Therefore, I
have a feeling just like taking on ground class. The different option is that the class only meets
twice per term. I like the course over all. There are many topics which have been discussed on class
discussion board and a lot of related learning reading assignments. Here, I will briefly go over a few
new materials which I have learned so far from the course.
What topics in this course do affect you the most? To answer the question, I am interested in
making decision topic. As an individual has to make decisions daily, the person needs to make a
better decision among different options. Making decision can be done by followed some factors
and basic process. First, the individual must identify the problem to analyze the cause. Next, the
person needs to search for the reliable information and looks for the alternative ways. Then, the
individual will make the decision and evaluation the outcome (Fred C, 2010). There are many
factors which have been involved in the process.

15. How My Writing Has Improved
After this semester of English 102, at Bristol Community College I feel that I have gained the
skill to articulate what I want to convey to the reader in many ways. I don't just look at
grammatical error, but instead I look for ways to make my sentences more effective and concise.
Nevertheless, I hope that this strategy will continue to help me improve my writing even further
on in the future. My strong points as a reader have also definitely improved after reading the
poems and stories we experienced this semester. Writing has been an important form of
expression for me. I find myself to be very soft spoken and speaking verbally is usually difficult
for me because I can't always seem to find the right words to say. I feel that I am more expressive
and have more control over what I want to say. While this semester progressed toward its end, I
have learned new writing skills and gradually learned how to engage with audiences. This skill
was very useful in meeting my course goals in English 102. I believe that I have grown at
organization and careful stream my thoughts as well. Before I would just begin writing my papers
without any plans or organization, along with no definite idea of where I would be going with the
assignments, but throughout this course I've learned that you should base your paper around your
thesis statement. Another skill I took from this class was to value my classmate's responses, from
their reactions made me much more aware that my main ideas

limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays
to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is
why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the

The most important improvement for me in this course was on my grammar. I was not aware of
the comma rules before. It was shocking to see where commas are to be put and the places that I
usually miss. The Hacker lessons we did in and out of class on commas have improved my
grammar significantly. Looking back through all of my graded essays it is unbelievable how
many commas I have actually missed. Also, writing the essays in MLA format and including
work cited entries and quotations, has helped me become more comfortable with it. When I write
essays now, I do not hesitate or get anxious if I have to add a work cited entry. However, even
though I have know a little bit more of when to use commas and have a little bit more knowledge
about grammar there is still a lot of room for improvement. Some areas where I need to improve
include transitions between paragraphs, being to repetitive, and my conclusions. This class has
definitely helped me make my transitions better; however they still could use some improvement. I
have to make sure that the reader can comprehend my thought process and that my transitions do
not get in the way of the flow of the paper. In some of the rough drafts for my essays I could not
find links between paragraphs at all but after work shopping in class I believe that they have
significantly improved. I also need to make sure that I do not repeat the same ideas or words too

Introduction: What Did You Learn from the Course Content? I feel like I learned a lot from this
course. I think, overall, this course was very eye–opening and made me understand, and want to
better understand, issues involving gender and how they effect society. I would say the one of the
most important pieces of information I learned was just how much the idea of gender and gender
roles influences everyday life. I had never really thought too much about the determents of gender
or traditional masculine and feminine ideals before this class, and how we as a society promote
and encourage the belief that a person's gender or sex creates different innate, natural attitudes and
attributes. Learning about how important society's views of gender is, and how it affects the way
we learn and think, makes me look at our culture in a different way. For example, before this class
I never realized how much women are objectified and put under intense Photoshop in
advertisements. This better understanding of the way society is helps me take a step back and look
at our culture in a different way, and allows me to become more aware of the issues surrounding
gender, sex, and the ideals of masculinity and femininity.
What Class Material Did You Learn That Had the Most Effect On You? While I think most of this
class effected me in a profound way, one of the most significant pieces of class material that
effected me was the videos we watched and the articles we read over violence.

My Experience throughout English 101
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest
potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic
requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my
professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for
some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me
with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101
taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was
required.
In the...show more content...
Also, by revising my essays I felt that I had the chance of writing with a broader sense.
Another weakness that I had coming into English 101 was my way of reading. I remember
having to read an essay or book 3 or 4 times before I could ever sit down and write about it. I was
looking and at the words all wrong. However, my professor introduced a technique of reading
critically. "A critical analysis, on the other hand, takes a viewpoint and attempts to its validity;"
(Trimble, 95) In Trimble's quote he is trying say that a critical analysis helps a reader understand
what the author is really trying to point out. This was the same approach that was taught to me by
my professor. This type of analysis helped me understand better what the author was trying to
convey and it also helped me explain it better in my essays.
Additionally, another weakness that I had when coming into English 101 was that I was a selfish
writer. Like Trimble said, "His natural tendency as a writer is to think primarily of himself– hence to
write primarily for himself." (Trimble, 4) I was a writer who only cared about impressing one
type of audience my professor and not writing to prove a point or expand my knowledge to several
other audiences. However, after writing several unsatisfying essays I had come to realize that my
style of writing was too narrow and boring. In this realization of writing I discovered that what
matters the most is pleasing your audience (many not one), and

19. The research Process Essay
Processes of research by Jonathan Guy
In this essay I will outline the primary methods of conducting research, their advantages and
disadvantages and will outline where they are best utilised. In addition to this, I will select certain
methods of research that I believe will be applicable to my own dissertation and state why I will use
those particular methods to conduct my own research.
The first question we should ask is what is research? John C. Merriam considers research as "a
reaching out to bring together, organise and interpret what ever may be added to our store of
knowledge...most truly exemplified when it involves the wider relationship of specific facts to the
whole structure of knowledge". (C. Merriam, 1941, pg890) In other...show more content...
It is the fundamental requirement in the advance of civilisation" (Merriam, 1929, 56–57).
Whilst there seems little argument over whether we should conduct research or not, its importance
being more than apparent, the question now becomes in what manner should we conduct research
and what advantages do certain methods have over others. There are numerous ways of conducting
research but the most prominent are the science and scientific methods, the logical methods, the case
methods, the statistical methods, and the experimental methods each of which shall now be
considered.
First we shall consider the scientific method. There is much debate as to whether social studies can
be considered a science on the basis of how it conducts its research but any claims that it is a
science are based more or less entirely on the scientific method and rational choice, characterised
predominantly by its use of facts and empirical evidence to support its claims with in political
"science". Karl Pearson states the scientific method as "The scientific method is marked by the
