1. Plagiarism: A Serious Crime Essay
Plagiarism: A Serious Crime
Plagiarism is a serious crime and should be treated seriously by anyone who chooses to plagiarize.
Plagiarism should not be treated lightly and is something that needs to be thought about thoroughly
before anyone decides that he or she wants to plagiarize. It is nothing needs to be ignored or
brushed off like itГ°s nothing and the person can get away with it.
People spend too much time thinking, writing, experimenting or working for someone to just think
that they have the right to just come in and steal that personГ°s idea. Plagiarism is stealing. Stealing
is taking someone elseГ°s things without them having knowledge that you are taking it and keeping
it for yourself and telling...show more content...
And then some ignorant person comes along and takes this away from this person is hurting them.
You are taking away from maybe their money that they earned for their work. Or taking away from
their intelligence that they used to write or create what you stole from them. I doubt that anyone
would appreciate someone just coming in and taking what they worked so very hard on to gain
recognition for. No one would be happy about this at all.
Any crime in this country that can jeopardize your future in the society of America is a truly serious
crime. In high schools and college plagiarism is not something that is taken lightly or jokingly.
You are putting your future at stake if you decide that you want to plagiarize at any school. If you
are caught plagiarizing at school there is a great chance that you will be removed from that school
and put at stake your chance of getting into another school in the future. No school would be happy
to accept anyone who was caught plagiarizing and penalized for that action of unjust behavior. Just
like no department store would be glad to hire a person who was in the past caught shoplifting at
another department store and prosecuted for that. So there is many things that a person is putting at
stake when they decide to plagiarize.
The idea of plagiarizing is just a dull–witted one. You choose to plagiarize you choose to accept the
consequences that come along with it. Any idea, work

2. Reflective Essay On Plagiarism
I know what plagiarism is and the rules the University has on the honesty policy, however as any
other student could possibly but accidently do I plagiarized when trying to get the project done
before the deadline. I know that plagiarism can be 1 word to 10 words or more, but when rushing to
get so much overwhelming work done it may have been the last thing I was thinking about .
The night of the project deadline, I was working on the project. I was so behind because of other
classes work, so I facetimed my partner for help she was also behind on the project. She gave me
good advice on what I should do. The advice she gave was helpful, but it wasn't helping the time
that was ticking fast. Therefore, we shared our files with each other, so we could have the work
done and turned in on time. In all honesty, Plagiarism didn't cross my mind that night, but now that I
look back, I realize I made a huge mistake. I didn't complete my work, because I was stuck with
other classwork that was difficult and took most of my time. I know that shouldn't be a excuse, but
my spanish, government, and pre–cal classes were taking most of my time. This project was quite
difficult, it took so much reading which made it harder for me to get it done fast along with my
other work. I didn't think that a couple of words would make it seem as if I was trying to copy or
cheat, just was hoping to finish it on time so I could get the grade I needed. I realize now the
importance of using my own words and if I do use another piece of work in mine , I need to cite
where it came from or who it came from in the correct format for the paper assigned . When i was
doing the project I used an outside resource, only to unintentionally plagiarize it . My partners use
of bigger/more educated sounding words and sentences was what made me use them. I needed to
do away with the simple words. So when I used the words she used I didn't think about citing the
information down. I am deeply sorry for this and know that my teacher had to take time out of
their schedule to handle this situation. I will not give a bunch of excuses because there is only 1
true reason and it is the fact that I did not use my time wisely in order to do better about my choice

3. Plagiarism: Discussion Questions
Question Define plagiarism in your own words. What do you think plagiarism means? Illustrate
your discussion with hypothetical examples. Why is plagiarism a serious problem? What is your
opinion of the impact of the Internet and all its resources on academic integrity? How can
plagiarism be avoided? One definition of plagiarism is that it is "theft of intellectual property."
Do you agree with this assessment? Why or why not? What suggestions would you offer to
eliminate both inadvertent and deliberate plagiarism? Plagiarism is incorrectly attributing words
or concepts to your own inventiveness, without giving appropriate credit to the originator of
those words or ideas. The most obvious example of plagiarism is copying the words of others
without inserting a footnote, endnote, or other form of citation in a research paper. Professional
journalists and writers as well as students have been found guilty of plagiarism, when they
incorporated the words of others into their prose, and did not give credit to the original source.
Merely changing one or two words does not absolve someone of plagiarism. It is also plagiarism if
you paraphrase the words or ideas of an author and do not give that person appropriate credit. It is
more difficult to identify plagiarism regarding paraphrasing or the ownership of ideas (versus
directly–quoted words). What constitutes an 'original' idea is often hotly debated. For example,
Shakespeare seldom used original plots. The author of the

4. Essay on How to Avoid Plagiarism
How to Avoid Plagiarism
Plagiarism is a growing problem in universities (Matheson & Starr 2013) and becoming too
common in the scientific world (Ober et al. 2012). Hence it is important for students as well as
researchers to know how to avoid plagiarism. Before discussing the ways to avoid plagiarism, this
paper discusses the definition, the types and reasons for plagiarism. "Copying' or "borrowing"
someone else's words or ideas may perhaps be the more inoffensive way of explaining plagiarism.
However, these two terms may deliver a connotation that plagiarism is not much of a serious offense.
Whether the act of plagiarising is intentional or unintentional, it is considered as a fraud. In an
academic setting plagiarism may even...show more content...
There are surely many other ways of avoiding plagiarism but there are five simple rules suggested by
Ober et al. (2012).
Rule 1: Do not copy It is not a good practice to simply copy what is found in other people's work,
books or even your own writing. If you have to do so, do it properly by copying it with quotation
marks and appropriate citation. In addition to this, it is good to have a proper time management in
which you would have enough time to cite your sources properly.
Rule 2: Write in your own words Paraphrasing means putting someone else's ideas into your own
words but care must be taken as changing a few words and rearranging the original sentence is still
considered as "copying". Hence, though paraphrasing is commonly suggested as one of the ways to
avoid plagiarism it is much better to avoid paraphrasing and rather use your own original "voice".
Rule 3: When in doubt, cite This is one of the ways to avoid plagiarism but it should not be done
excessively. Otherwise you would end up with excessive citation in your piece of writing and lack
of writing in your own words. This is an indication for you to consider rewriting the paper.
Rule 4: Don't recycle images, figures, tables or text from one of your previously published papers
without citing This is the case of self–plagiarising when you republish a figure from earlier
publication but fail to cite the original and obtain

6. How to Avoid Plagiarism Essay
Plagiarism, conventionally defined as literary theft, is the stealing and replication of the original
ideas of another person without requesting for consent or crediting the author of a recorded or
authored work (Heath 4). It may take several forms, for example, presenting an idea as original even
though it has been derived from an existing source, or even neglecting to put quotation marks when
quoting a sentence from borrowed work. In as much as plagiarism is widely regarded as a bad
practice, it is at times committed unintentionally. As a result, there is an anti–plagiarism policy in
several academic institutions and heavy penalties are imposed on individuals involved in plagiarism.

The disciplinary committees of the institutions make judgments based on laws and policies which
bind the students and members of staff. Reactive technical solutions like plagiarism detection
services on internet networks establish absence of plagiarism (Bahnot, Fallows & Fallows 173).
Institutions implementing these policies use plagiarism–related website engines to cross–check
work presented by its students. The process involves the collection of the information, detection,
confirmation and investigation of copying. Before introducing a policy to monitor plagiarism, an
institution must compare the costs against the benefits incurred in the process. Pro–active policy
requires students to sign a form before submitting their exams, stating that they have not stolen any
persons work. Plagiarism policies have been publicized to the staff and students in many institutions
to help curb the vice.
Penalties for plagiarism become more severe as a student advances in the academic ladder (Heath 4).
Students caught stealing and replicating other authors ideas risk suspension or expulsion in many
learning institutions in the US and the UK. Educational uprightness policies of some colleges and
universities requires the offender's results to be nullified, while some institutions give a special grade

8. Plagiarism In The Academic Setting
Plagiarism the act of copying someone else's work and using it as your own without giving that
resource credit. Plagiarism is taken very seriously in the academic setting. It is being dishonest with
your work and trying to take credit for someone's hard work and for their accomplishments.
I think plagiarism is a problem in the academic setting because some students are not confident in
their work and they don't want to work hard to get a good grade. I also think another issue in the
academic setting is that students most students are young and out of high school and they do not have
their priorities in line and they allow other distractions to affect their school work and they don't have
the time to get the work completed. So they take the...show more content...

submission. Also it is required that we submit to Turnitin, with this resources it has the same
outcome it shows where something could possibly be plagiarized and allows the student to fix the
issue. You also have the library to research articles and topics to get better understandings of what
you are doing. Last resource and probably the most important is your instructor. If you should ever
need to turn something in late so that you don't plagiarize this is who you would go to. For me, I
try to double check my work and I always review the results of Turnitin before submitting to ensure
my paper is 100% my work and that there will be no future issues.
My biggest take away is to always be upfront and honest especially with your academic career and
professional career. Plagiarizing and being dishonest gets you nowhere further in life and only
causes more issues. I believe in working hard and you will see your success start to blossom. I
know plagiarism is a huge issue throughout all universities but I am glad that GCU strives their best

9. Plagiarism : What Is Plagiarism?
What is Plagiarism? Plagiarism is using someone else's work, words, production, researches and
ideas without the approval or the acknowledgment of the writer or producer, and claiming the credit
for himself. Many reasons and factors are attributed for the use of plagiarism and could be cultural,
historical, linguistic, environmental and educational background. Plagiarism is a form of an
academic dishonesty, academic misconduct, and a digital cheating. It is declared to be an
unacceptable legal act and institutional regulations. And universities, schools, and instructors do not
only need to decrease plagiarism, but they must also affect positively on students writings, increase
the understanding of how to use digital technology to facilitate their academic writing. Where
plagiarism can be included? In written assignment and project: when students take other people
words and researches, and claimed them as their own. There are three types of common plagiarism in
written assignment: o Copying words and ideas from published sources: Students copy information
without the acknowledgment of the source; summarizing or paraphrasing of the text without the
acknowledgment of the source. To acknowledge the source, student must reference or cite to it. o
Copying from other students: claim and pretend that other students work as their work o Working
too closely with other students: final result of the work turn out to be identical or near identical. The
students will share the same

Taking someone's words and using them without a proper citation is a problem. Without being
taught the correct way, this problem is not going to correct itself and will continue to become a
bigger problem. There are major consequences for plagiarising, but these can be avoided with a
simple citation. Tying together the definition ofplagiarism, reasons for using documentation, and an
explanation of MLA 8 and APA citations will all be brought together. Learning what kind ofcitation,
and what needs a citation is a very important concept in becoming a successful writer. Citing a source

These students were taught a life lesson, something that they will never do again. Being taught,
the correct way, at a young age will solve many of the problems that we have today. Becoming
aware of the consequences that this could lead to would be worth the extra time citing a
document, or writing your own paper. Taking someone's words or writing could lead to loss of job
/school, fines, and so much more. To avoid these problems, a simple citation will help anyone
become aware that you did give credit to the author. Jim Carnett published an article in the Los
Angeles Times stating that he had tried to submit a column to an editor but they sent it back because
it contained plagiarised material. Carnett said, "I lifted a portion of one of my columns and inserted
it in the Daily Pilot piece without attribution." He hadn't cited his own work and now what he did
was plagiarism. To Carnett, this was a total accident, but this shows that you should cite any
information that you use. Although there are arguments that there is no such thing as plagiarism, "If
a novelist uses a non–fiction book for research, how is that stealing? Non–fiction promises facts,
there is no copyright in facts, ergo no stealing..." (Independent.co.uk) it is always best to give credit
to the source that you received the information from; thus not having a chance of plagiarism.

13. Plagiarism And The Ethics Of Plagiarism
Many scholars and parents have heard the term "plagiarism" while talking about writing essays,
poems, and other works. Plagiarism is defined as "to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of
another) as one 's own" by Merriam–Webster dictionary. While plagiarism may be denoted as
stealing one's work without credit, a more vast and broad definition usually applies to college level
work. Every college and university has their own handbook and code of conduct on what exactly "
plagiarism" is defined as, and what are the consequences for breaking these rules. Collin College's
"Scholastic Dishonesty", Boston University's "Academic Conduct Code", and Yale College's
"What is Plagiarism?" all have different perspectives as to what "plagiarism" is and how it is defined.
Collin College's "Scholastic Dishonesty" is set up in six sections, four having bolded first words,
showing what each paragraph is about. The wording in the sections are very formal; making it
seem as though to steal someone's work to be childish or immature. The tone, set by the wording
and overall flow of the sentences, is very serious; it makes it seem as though committing one of
these crimes is as bad and just as serious as committing murder. The list of scholastic dishonesties,
general scholastic dishonesty, plagiarism, cheating, and collusion, is very open ended. Collin
College even goes as far as saying "while specific examples are listed below, this is not an exhaustive
list and scholastic dishonesty may

14. Turnitin: Online Plagiarism
Turnitin is an Internet–based plagiarism–prevention service created by iParadigms, LLC, first
launched in 1997. Typically, universities and high schools buy licenses to submit essays to the
Turnitin website, which checks the documents for unoriginal content. The results can be used to
identify similarities to existing sources or can be used in formative assessment to help students learn
how to avoid plagiarism and improve their writing.[1]
Students may be required by schools to submit essays to Turnitin, as a deterrent to plagiarism. This
has been a source of criticism, with some students refusing to do so in the belief that requiring it
constitutes a presumption of guilt. Additionally, critics have alleged that use of the software violates
educational privacy and intellectual property laws....show more content...

Plagiarism is "intentionally" representing someone else's word or idea as their own The college
life can be very overwhelming at times. Imagine going to work full time and still have to come
home and still deal with more work. I can personally speak on this matter. I work full time and do
some my homework on thirty minute break. Plagiarism comes from cracking under too much
pressure also. By misrepresenting someone else's work can land you in a series of disciplinary
actions. In the third grade, I learned about plagiarism and did not quite fully understand what my
teachers was saying. I printed the paper out from the internet and handed it in. The next day my
teacher pulled me to the side and asked did I remember what she said yesterday

Plagiarism is usually apparent when the writing style, tone, and quality in the paper doesn't
match up to what we've come to know of your work as a student. Of course, over time we would
hope you improve and perfect your writing, but each person's style is unique. A skilled educator
can recognize someone's writing (both students' and colleagues in the field) rather quickly. When
you try to paraphrase someone else's ideas but do it poorly, we can usually tell, and today's
electronic tools make it easy to verify. But when there's an obvious mismatch between your writing
and what you copied, you're doomed from the start. Just don't! I love this line from Dorothy Clark's

Throughout our school careers we will encounter times when teachers and professors will require us
to submit written assignments. Within these assignments one of the main areas of concerns while
the instructor is reviewing the final report is plagiarism. In regards to plagiarism there are six topics
that I would like to cover on the topic. What is plagiarism? Why do students plagiarize? What is the
difference between intentional and unintentional plagiarism? What is the importance of citing?
What is citing, direct quoting, and paraphrasing? What is common knowledge? By understanding
these areas in the context of plagiarism we as students can ensure that we will not be guilty of
cheating on an assignment by using words and Ideas...show more content...
That is a fairly cut and dry issue. There are many different reasons that students may decide to
plagiarize. Some of these reasons include: "deadlines come around more quickly than expected,
sometimes assignments feel overwhelming, and sometimes the boundaries of plagiarism and
research just get confused." (Educational Tips on Plagiarism Prevention) If students manage their
time and stay on task with their assignments the chance that they will be compelled to plagiarize
should decrease.
When discussing why students plagiarize, two of the reasons given can be considered intentional
and the other unintentional. With that being said what is intentional plagiarism; intentional means,
"done with intention or on purpose" (Dictionary.com). So intentional plagiarism would be
purposefully conveying someone else's ideas and or words as your own. Students intentional
plagiarism may come about for many reasons: "the quality of work found online, thinking their work
cannot compare...pressure from family, peers, and instructors to compete for scholarships,
admissions, and, of course, places in the job market...their peers plagiarize...poor planning"
(Educational Tips on Plagiarism Prevention). Unintentional plagiarism on the other hand is when an
author represents another's work as their own without doing realizing that they did it. Some
examples of this include but are not
