Collector Iconic Design
Vitra Bird by the Bouroullecs by Ole Jensen
Consumers make more conscious buying deci-
sions. They are attracted to products that last
longer, with a more timeless design. Tired of
endless choice in products on the market, they
save up for that one iconic design that has
been on their wish list for ages. Such classics
people just buy once. Consumers do not want
to browse 500 different chairs, they just want
that Wishbone chair by Wegner. And save for it.
Choosing items to create a collection is also
popular. Decorative products or artefacts with
a special meaning are carefully chosen. Birds

consumers information on these products. If
you repeatedly add to your range and share
stories, people will come back for more.

Techniques Knotted Felt Felt Textured Ceramics

by Dana Barnes by Dana Barnes Heath Ceramics
The many compressed materials make great
raw materials; many felted yarns, pieces of
reclaimed wood and leather scraps are re-
worked into new types of materials. The touch
of the craftsman or tool is often visible.
Much of the effects in products are left to
chance; designers are using effect glazes or
give products a used or weathered effect.
These techniques are often unpredictable,
creating unique products.

Inlay techniques are on trend; the dense and
compressed look of the material with the
carefully inlaid details. Natural materials such
as shell, wood and stone are used for inlays,

Unpredictable Process

Designers have become scientists and re-
searchers, trying to invent new materials and
patterns to create exciting effects.

used to print patterns by hand on vintage finds.
The Rain Tables she created are handmade
steel items, on the surface of which she experi-
ments with staining caused by raindrops. Quite

Many designers are developing new materi-
als, often looking for sustainable or very new
materials to use in their products. In many in-
dustries, multidisciplinary teams of engineers,
designers and scientists are formed to work on
new developments.
