  1. Team of Rivals - By Doris Kearns Goodwin - Chapter 9 - A Man Knows His Own Name
  2. Chapter 9 begins with Lincoln defeating his Rivals - Bates, Chase and Seward to win the Republican Nomination
  3. The Democrats as well as the Republicans were in shocked that Lincoln had won the Republican Nomination. At first, nobody believed it to be true. After repeated announcements by many different sources, the people started to realize it was true. Many thought Lincoln won by accident, They were confused! They could not see and did not know the qualities Lincoln possessed
  4. Many times in class we have talked about being marginalized and attacked while in the leadership position, both of which Lincoln had to endure. Although they did not know much about Lincoln, not even his real name, the public already had a preconceived notion as to who Lincoln was. Negative comments by journalists were published and put out for everyone to read. They talked about his appearance, the way he spoke and they made assumptions about his ability to do the job. They thought he was not capable and did not have the skills and qualities needed to be President. Lincoln did not let this negativity deter him from striving to be the best he could be at what he was trying to accomplish. He kept his eyes on the prize and continued to focus on his journey to become President. Just as Lincoln experienced these situations in his leadership role, we as Principals and Assistant Principals may experience some of the same negative circumstances from our students, parents, the community and even our faculty and staff members. We must be prepared to handle these type situations similar to how Lincoln handled his.
  5. Abraham Lincoln knew that he could not go through his campaign without a strong team. Lincoln began catering to his rivals egos and going above and beyond to recruit the people who were once his adversaries. Lincoln chose people that he knew would be beneficial to his campaign and the mission he was trying to accomplish, even if it meant putting people on his team that once were against him. Lincoln distributed work assignments amongst his team members and trusted that they would accomplish those task. He did not mind listening to his team members opinions. He encouraged his team members, he gave credit where credit was due and took the blame when things did not go as planned. As a Principal or Asst. Principal, you need to build a team of teacher who have the same vision as you and can also produce good ideas. You must have a team of teachers who you can delegate to do certain things and trust that they will get those things done. It is important to get team buy in, have team cohesion, motivate our students, faculty and staff as well as show recognition and reward for a job well done.
  6. Abraham Lincoln managed to turn his biggest rival into one of his greatest assets
  7. Lincoln and his team worked together to rally up the people and win them over.
  8. Abraham Lincoln was very ambitious, but he maintained outstanding character during his campaign. He was kind to his opponents, open hearted and although he really wanted to win he made sure he did so with integrity. Eventually all of Lincoln and his teams hard work paid off. In 1860, Lincoln was elected as the 16 th President of the United States
  9. Characteristics a leader must have, but are not limited to are Courage, Loyalty, Desire, Competitiveness.... Abraham Lincoln is the perfect epitome of a leader. Abraham Lincoln exhibited all of these characteristics and many more. When becoming a Principal or Asst Principal we must remember to lead like Lincoln led. Roberts, W. (1987) Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun. New York, NY: Warner Books.
  10. In conclusion, as we began our journeys to become Principals and Asst Principals, keep in mind the following as Lincoln did himself…(read slide)
