beloved by art aficionados worldwide, his painting of sunset in Venice
is equally celebrated. In fact, the painting San Giorgio Maggiore by
Twilight was featured in the heist caper The Thomas Crown Affair,
which starred Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo.

Painted in 1908, San Giorgio Maggiore by Twilight was inspired by
the frequent gondola rides that Monet and his wife took around San
Giorgio, a monastery island in Venice. At sunset, the water around
the island reflects the splendid reds, roses, and golds of the sky,
which Monet captured in his work. Also seen are the Grand Canal and
the dome of Santa Maria della Salute.

Monet's Paris exhibition. She later donated it to the National Museum
