  The Responsibilities Spring 2012

    of a Community
What is a community?
• “A group of people, connected through common
geography or common technology-- who share mutual
interest, and who actively act together to achieve
  common goals.” -Ewan McIntosh
• Communities are built upon coming together as a unified
  group.
• Building a community
  requires responsibilities.
What is a responsibility?
• Taking care of your duties.
Responsibilities to build a community:
• Cooperation

• Participation
  ▫ Getting involved

• Respect

• Commitment
  ▫ Brought on by participation
• Work
How do you choose a responsibility?
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

• Knowing what needs to be done.

• Thinking of ways that could help or make a
  difference.
• Common effort of a group for their mutual benefit.
• Teamwork.
• Working together peacefully.
• Major responsibility when coming together as a better
  functioning community.
• People do what is asked or told.
Participation

• Getting involved in something that
you believe will or could make a
  difference for others.
• People participating shows who
cares about doing what could be
  right.
• When people get involved, it can
  bring a community together.
What is respect?
• Can be shown through behavior and it can also be felt.

• Act upon working in a community to build respect.

• Consideration.
Commitment

• Dedication or putting forth an effort to something.
• A promise.
• Responsibilities can take as much commitment that they
  can get.
• If people can commit, they can sometimes make a
  difference.
• Pitch in and do what is right and stick with it.
Work
• Working in an area for a while can start to bring people
  closer together.
• All responsibility leads to work.
Coming Together in a Community
• Creativity
• Community “get-togethers” such as cookouts.
▫ Cookouts bring people together by starting
    conversations among people.
• Sports are a great way to bond with other people.
▫ People find out about each other and what their
    interests are.
It can only take one person, but it is
better with more.
• One person can make a difference.

• If people care, they’ll listen and help.
Taking Time

• Everything takes time. Nothing happens in a heartbeat
  or snap of the finger.
• Healing takes time.
• Rebuilding takes time.
• Responsibilities require time.
• Knowing where people stand in the community takes
  time.
Our community (West Clark) came
together when Henryville was struck
by a tornado.
It should not take a disaster to bring a
community together. However, it brought
our community (West Clark) together.
Everybody worked together. Commitment,
cooperation, participation, respect, work,
and time is all it took to bring the
community together and functioning.
People volunteered to help the victims.
People donated much needed items. Bring
the community together, and try to keep it
that way.
